Saying 'goodbye' on the phone. US style?

i can't help but have noticed that the us tv and film industry more than not portray phone conversations finishing without any 'goodbyes'.

someone will say, for example, 'see you at the mall' then put down the phone.. is this a reflection of the norm in us land or just filming priorities of time and money?.

Growing up, my brother and I noticed that people on American tv shows always hung up the phone without saying any polite words of farewell. We thought it was widespread practice, and that, therefore Americans were "really rude!"

just wanted to let everyone know i took the advice of someone who suggested i wedge the damn thing against the house, taped down the handle, yanked it with both arms and the thing came to life like there was no tomorrow.. i burned up at least 600 calories, the lawn looks great and i have earned my keep today!.

first off i'd like to say that the title of this thread is not tongue-in-cheek.

i remember a thread from ak-jeff a couple months ago where he observed how some posters develop a condescending attitude towards christians and how that made him feel like he didn't really fit in here.

i'm sure that may have come across (unintentionally) in some of my recent threads where i've related my arrival at agnosticism/atheism.
