  Well done Venice! I've had a historicist bent for a long time now (the assumption that all prophecied events happened soon after their prediction) the "revelation" that Titus gathered his armies at Megiddo helps strengthen that belief even more. After all, there are parts of Revelation which refer to past and present, as well as future and it is not always easy to tell which is which.

  I also note that your detractor has tried to start a new thread to take away attention from this post; it seems my theory that he only posts to a thread if he can get in early is correct. It also shows he's got no arguments to bring to you in this thread. Perhaps this discussion should be continued in this thread rather than in the one he started; there's no need to feed the troll...

  will time spent as a jehovahs witness always have a disabling effect on a persons life, does the very existence of the wtbts cause us to feel wounded?.

  is it a good idea to blame the wtbts for the negative impact that it has had on our lives, or will their come a point when the experience ultimately proves to be character-building?.

  if the experience does eventually engender a form of emotional intelligence within us, does this mean that we must start to think about actually forgiving all those jw's who handed out to us their own special form of emotional abuse?.

  Undoubtedly; just look at the way it controls and has damaged Freddie boy.

  Englishman, you're experiencing something that some (like Fred) will never know: Freedom! Something each slave to the WTS will have to discover for themselves; it's unfortunate that you can never do it for them; all part of growth, I suppose. SOme grow, and some never get beyond a certain stage of development.

  Yeah, the great disappearing act! AK managed to con them into sending his cong. records to an address he gave them; it's actually a friend of his! Hopefully that's the only stuff they've got on him; he'll be the Man Who Never Was!

  I note that some JW apologist on the newsgroup has taken issue with your mention of "disfellowshipping - he trots out the old (well, new, actually) line that this was never a disfellowshippable offence; it just means you disassociate yourself. These are the same people who say they never got excited over 1975 too...

  Why Another 1975 Scenario is Unlikely

  i note that (the brothers) some are speculating that 2005 now exists as the dubs' next "final" date to work towards.

  at this point in time, i can't see it being an effective carrot for attracting people outside the witnesses.

  basically, things are too good.. 1975 probably looked like a great date for the end, because so much had gone wrong in the early 70s; the post wwii "long (economic) boom" came to a screeching halt, the first of the "oil shocks" occurred, the us was losing the vietnam war and looked like it could lose the cold war with the ussr.. interestingly, while the jws were getting off on bad events in the world at large, so were certain elements of mainstream "christendom".

  Skimmer, I was going to make a follow-up post with some of the points you raised :

  1) Yes, the fact that some people still have vivid memories would definitely be an impediment to a new date. I note that the previous date fraud was perpetrated 50 years earlier (1925) meant that there just weren't the surviving numbers to exercise caution about the new (1975) date. 2005 is only 30 years; too short to get away with, especially with a few years to lead up to it.

  3) Yes, the Dubs in the early 70s could hide behind slow communication and lack of information available. The internet makes it too hard, especially if they are trying to recruit from outside, where people aren't as afraid of the 'net.

  In addition, I wonder whether the temptation to create a new date would be to keep the present members in, or to recruit new members. Remember, growth was substantial up until 1976.
