A really great video on the original pronunciation of Shakespeare (only about 10 1/2 min.)
by MeanMrMustard inthis is a really great video about how the original pronunciation of a language, during the time a play was written and performed, can affect the feeling and meaning.
i thought it was interesting.

maybe with a smidge of Pirate swagger thrown in for good measure.
It's appropriate you should say that, as the pronunciation they arrived at for Shakespeare resembles England's West Country dialect, which is a hold-over from old England, a sort of linguistic time machine. The West Country was also the origin of many pirates, which somewhat coincidentally led to Robert Newton playing up his own West Country accent when he played a pirate in the film "Treasure Island". This is a modern interpretation of the pirate accent, and many pirates were from other places, such as Jean Lafitte, who probably had a bayou accent, but it's probably a fairly accurate recreation of some English pirates' speech.
Now, most English accents at the time were rhotic, meaning they pronounced all the 'r's in their words. At this same time, many English were settling America, and, absent the influence of London and later the BBC, this inadvertently preserved the older form of English speech in the American colonies. This is why Americans and pirates both pronounce the 'r's strongly in nearly all words. Nowadays, Londoners imagine that they are pronouncing words more correctly, and deride their own original tongue as rustic and amusing.
This recording (skip in 30 seconds) of the Somerset (part of West Country) dialect may be similar to how our Mayflower ancestors spoke. This is a more comedic take on Somerset, which I never get tired of watching:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ng3fG1u4Xg
Supposedly it's not far off from how a few of the older folk actually speak there, though with so much slurring, no one would call this proper English in any time period.

Thanks, Bobcat, that's a very good point. The people of Biblical times likely didn't have a concept of, or word for, "environmental pollution".

IME, the adage is true - it's a waste of time to discuss religion with the religious.
Then I suppose we're on the same page. The JWs are zealous (well, relatively speaking) about their ministry, so I suppose we need to be to zealous about our message to the general population too.
Incidentally, Joe, I do want to speak up in defense of the fairer sex: there are plenty of attractive Witness women, and as indicated above, not all of them dress dowdily. You might be surprised, 90% of the younger sisters in my congregation range from pretty to hot. I could send you pictures if you don't believe me

Apostate article in new December 15, 2013 Watchtower lead article major contradiction of featured scripture 2 Thess. 2:1,2
by Poindexter Lionel Humperdique inthe below is the title and theme scripture of the lead article in the latest watchtower about apostates.
notice that the watchtower is unknowingly labeling themselves as an apostate, as the man of lawlessness, as we briefly review the context of its own theme scripture.. .

I don't have the exact info at hand, but out of the hundreds of times the Society placed "Jehovah" into their NWT's New Testament, a number of them were based on the fact that the scriptures were quoting the OT and had used "YHWH" in those places. Those changes are not considered controversial by some scholars. A further number of insertions of "Jehovah" are completely specious (and your example is one them), and that is, to my knowledge, the biggest source of controversy with the NWT, since of course they change the meaning of the verses.

If you get into a situation you do not like - then why stay in it?
The reason I stayed, was that I uncritically accepted a religious concept, and came to believe that it was the answer to all human problems.
The funny thing is that we told ourselves that we liked it, but underneath the facade, we were feeling all kinds of stress that we didn't need to be. The Society told us that any stress we felt was due to the world being wicked, that our own load was light. But staying in the religion was quite hard for some, yet they did it because they felt it was the truth, so where else could they go? They were in mental prison.

That's true 3rdgen, I've definitely had to play the "I wasn't feeling well" card to explain some of my absences. The main reason I go to the number of meetings I do is to avoid being nagged by certain individuals who I can't avoid, and because I can only play that sickness card so often for it to be believable.
Since I learned TTATT and saw posts here talking about how knowing TTATT has caused some to get upset/ill at meetings, I've begun to wonder if some of the sisters who were considered to be "sickly" were actually just trying to avoid the meetings.
