You're right, jgnat, I can see these covers quickly looking soiled. As soon as I got mine, I was already "seeing" smudges from certain angles that turned out to be my imagination. Perhaps they can be wiped off with a damp cloth, though I'm not sure what kind of material this is.

BUM WITNESSES
by The Searcher incan anyone save me the stress of listening to the self-appointed faithful & discreet slave for 3 hours, and give a clue as to roughly at what point in the proceedings was the derogatory term 'bum witnesses used, and by whom?
i'd really love to extract that comment and send it to a weakening witness, to highlight the judgmental arrogance and name-calling being displayed.. many thanks in advance folks!.

How the hell does "non" become "none" and then "bum"? "Non" and "none" sound nothing alike, for one thing.

In fact, although I think I like the new revision, I agree with your basic assertion that it's completely pointless. Was there ever really a need for the New World Translation in the first place? For decades, the Society would have us think so, trumpeting the no-nonsense approach that the Committee took to the wording, and the removal of the other Bibles' "bias" from the doctrinal scriptures, but now they've released an app where we can read other translations' renderings of a NWT verse, presumably because these other translations have some value after all (including the KJV?!).
I know JWs believe that the NWT is the best possible translation, but I feel like the removal of the strict following of verb tenses, etc. just brings the Bible in line enough with the existing modern-English Bibles that a Witness using the app and comparing translations is probably going to think, "Wait, what's the point of having our own Bible again?"

Why aren't you guys shocked that it includes other Bibles, especially the once-vilified King James Version? I'm shocked and you should be shocked too.
Edited to give credit to DATA-DOG on another thread, he's shocked.

So how exactly did this "new translation" come to be?
by sir82 ina normal person, upon hearing that a new (or revised) bible translation has been released, would have 2 questions spring to mind almost immediately:.
1) who did the work, and what are their credentials?.
2) what manuscripts is the work based on?.

Apognophos
Yes, that sounds like an accurate summation

What has happened to Jehovah's Witnesses???
by DATA-DOG ini know this is old news, but as i sit here, and ponder the upcoming agm, i can't help but think, " what happened?!!
" i actually awoke an hour before my alarm went off, just thinking of everything that is bothering me about the wtbts.
approach this list as a born-in, someone who was told that you were different from everyone else.

Sorry, but there's nothing new here (or under the sun!). The Society has long said that the leaders are the only ones capable of interpreting the Bible, not the rank and file. They made this same statement, louder than ever, when they began releasing the NWT in 1950. Before that Witnesses were happy with their KJV and the Society simply wrote Bible literature. When the NWT began to be released, they added "Bible and" to their company name, and claimed the authority to translate, not just reprint, God's Word. The revised NWT is just par for the course.
As far as jw.org, yes the Society has changed their preaching method. They've changed it multiple times. At first it was preaching by publications. Then preaching door to door, but using recordings, as well as sound cars and sandwich boards. Then they phased those out. In the future they may go back to modern electronic equivalents of those. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The app will be free, I'm sure. It's going to be called "JW Library" when it releases.

The new translation of John 17:3 seems like a major shift.
by paul from cleveland inup until now, everlasting life was dependent on "taking in knowledge".
it was a perfect fit for a publishing house to interpret that scripture that way.
if we didn't keep up with the endless stream of publications from the watchtower our salvation would be in jeopardy.

@rosyray: Yes, I remember them making a big deal in articles like that one over how the NWT used the wordier "taking in knowledge". However, as you said, the NWT now reads "coming to know", which is in fact different from most Bibles, which simply say "know". So I think they felt that "coming to know" was a more streamlined way of expressing the same concept as "taking in knowledge". Both describe a continuous process.

DATA-DOG: Personally I think it would be foolish to go rummaging through the pages of the new NWT when we can let the computer do it for us once the new PDF is released. But we'll find out soon enough.
