Great points, well written. It describes the basic thought process that I had too, as I started to notice that the Witnesses were living in fear and superstition just like many other religious people.

Miss my brother, but I just had to send this email to him.
by HayDay inthanks for getting back to me.. i know you may be simply following bible counsel because it answers questions in ways that are emotionally pleasing and require no verification.
people in the bible days could not comprehend their relationship to the physical world so they invented their own explanations.
these explanations tended to be simple, and some were harmful, resulting in religious dogma, which now for example serve as the grounds for you ending our relationship?.

Why the need for a new font?
by Splash inso with everything else being dissected, i want to know why it's important to have a font that can be copyrighted?.
the font used is very similar to a number of others, like tahoma, ms sans serif, and arial etc, so what benefit is there to employing (in the loose sense of the word) a team in japan to create a brand new western set of glyphs?.
will this help with their prosecution of those who copy/paste nnwt verses?.

Well, the Society isn't focusing on this. The subject occupied all of two or three sentences during the 3.5+ hour AGM. It's the posters here that are focusing on it

If Franz had denounced the faithful and discreet slave thing immediately and accused the rest of trying to wrest the authority of the "true" slave, he might have been able to seize on a few more unpopular doctrines and create a rift.
Maybe, but as Rutherford proved, he who owns the printing presses and the name of the Society is going to win out over the ones who don't. The dissenter(s) would need to have some big scandal on their side in order to convince JWs that the Society had gone apostate.

Surprised the Jephthah account was not rewritten
by maninthemiddle inthey had a chance to rewrite the bible and they leave the word "burnt offering" in there..
-
Apognophos
I think for Jephthah to be listed in Hebrews 11 indicates strongly that, at least by the time that letter was written, the Jews did not consider Jephthah as having sacrificed anyone. Perhaps it was redaction on their part, but I don't think the original account is indicating human sacrifice took place.
Even if one interprets the account as saying that Jepthah intended a burnt offering, and changed his plans when his daughter came out, why would a Jew ever make such a promise in the first place? What did he think was going to come through the door first, his pet goat? I think "olah" simply has to be interpreted as any sacrifice to God, in this account.

RNWT: Page 1767: About 1914
by StephaneLaliberte inin appendix b1, there is a timeline for the message of the bible.
on the second page of that appendix, there is a small section entitled "about 1914", what is this?
don't you find it odd that they use the word "about"?

Yes, 3rdgen, that was actually what I was told too, as late as the '90s. I actually started to type that in my last post, and it was just so stupid that I couldn't do it! How could anyone have noticed an invisible event that made no difference in the world (besides the trouble the Devil was stirring up as a "distraction" from the unnoticeable event)?

Okay, I see what you're saying, slimboyfat.
As for the mismatch between WWI and Christ's second coming, the explanation among Witnesses I knew was that Satan was stirring up trouble on Earth before he was kicked out of heaven. He would have known when that was going to happen, after all. Of course any rationalization is possible when we're talking about invisible events!

Then... why would they have said "about", if it had to have happened that year? They didn't say "About October 1914", they said "About 1914".

The Big AGM News is That There Was No News
by cofty init was totally vacuous.
despite the promise of "new light" in the opening talk there was nothing.. a few of the more clumsy phrases in the nwt have been improved, and it has a nice new grey cover - so what?.
i am thinking about the jws who have spent a lifetime waiting on paradise.

I'm actually glad that Genesis has been pushed into the Bible a ways. I was always irritated trying to flip to early chapters of Genesis and having the cover slow me down. It's much faster to get to now. But I agree that it's strange they put so much preamble in front of it.

No, he's right. I noted this as strange in my post on this page (search for 1914): http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/beliefs/264955/2/My-highlights-from-the-AGM
