Sacramental wine was legal. That might not seem like a big demand until you stop and consider that the Catholic Church needed it for communion
Vineyards operated under religious permits.
during a recent conversation i had with someone, a question came up that i really don't know the answer to.
did jw's still drink during prohibition in the us during the 1920's until it's repeal in 1933?
was alcoholic beverages considered forbidden and possibly subject to disfellowshipping?.

i came across this older wt which i assume c t russell wrote the article.
unlike modern practitioners of numerology who calculate a value for each letter of the alphabet, russell simply adds up the number of letters in each word to arrive at [horror of horrors] 666.. and he lists there on the page each one of the organisations that must accordingly be part of the great harlot with 18 letters [in english] in their titles, because 18 is clearly 6+6+6 or 666!
strangely he hasn't stopped to think about another possibility for an 18 letter title.
It'd make you laugh...
Yes
A 21st century observer laughing at the ignorance and naivete of a 19th century writer doesn't mean a whole lot though.
It's like us laughing at H.G. Wells notions of how a technically advanced alien race would fight a war
Russell's writings are wacky by today's standards, but it is one pebble in a riverbed of wackiness
the first 3 presidents of the i.b.s.a ./ jehovah`s witnesses / wtb&ts.. w.h.conley ,c.t.russell ,j.f.rutherford .. how many jehovah`s witnesses know that ?
how many ex jehovah`s witnesses knew that ?
the wt society teaches that jesus returned to begin his "invisible presence" in 1914 directing his attention toward the earth as ruling king.
The change from 1878 to 1918 (Christ receiving his kingly power) was made during the Rutherford era
certain forces appear to be trying to make sure donald trump never runs for president again.
some republicans are clearly abandoning trump and of course the democratic press has been saying trump is done!
is trump’s goose cooked?
Trump's problems are far from over

Trump is a survivor. I don't think this impeachment trial is the worst of his problems, but I think he'll pull through.
Trump's political leaning is actually National Populist. It should not be confused with traditional Conservatism, just as disagreeing with it should not be confused with hating the man.
(I'd be happy to explain the difference...)

Phizzy,
Section 29 of the Volstead Act (the legal arm of Prohibition) allowed wine and cider (but not beer) to be made at home. Home wine making went through the roof.
The warning labels you're thinking of were there because the grape juice was being sold commercially.
Vineyards circumvented any possible illegality by selling "Wine bricks" which were boxes of compacted, dried grapes
since all the leftist idiots are trying to cancel films they don't like i am buying some dvds of my fav.
pi films.
my favorite top pick is animal house.
I enjoyed Disney's Song of the South as child. This goes back a bit, but we were actually taught to sing these songs in school by teachers of color who were not ashamed of this legacy. Today, you don't dare utter even a line of this stuff, because it has become offensive.
I think my favorite politically incorrect film in terms of rewatch value was the original Porky's. Even my JW wife (Back when she was a JW) would laugh at the film's sheer raunchiness.

It did not prohibit consumption.
Like I said on page two of this thread it was actually still legal to make wine at home during Prohibition as long as it was for your own personal use

The 18th Amendment forbade the manufacture, sale, importation and transportation of intoxicating liquors.
It did not forbid their consumption and it was actually still legal to make wine at home for your own personal use
so you've probably heard of the ethical dilemma question which is a thought-experiment where you imagine there is a runaway train-trolley, a junction with a lever that you can pull and two tracks - one with 5 workers on it and another with just 1, but no way to warn them.. all you can do is pull the lever, or not, thus allowing 5 people to die or through your direct action sacrificing 1 to save them.. what should you do?.
this sort of thing may seem silly but it comes up in real life.
should a self-driving car for instance, faced with a certain collision, chose which pedestrians to run over?
ROFL
Not sure where that was going....
