Lithium?
by spoils_useful_habits inrecently one of my brothers was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder by a psychiatrist.
this has hit me hard emotionally because out of the whole bunch we are the closest.
i've always suspected something was up.

The NAMI and the NIMH websites have some great information and discussion groups about different mental/thought disorders and their treatments. You should realize that Lithium has been around a while and is probably the most prescribed med for bipolar, however there are others since some patients don't do well with Lithium. It can cause severe weight gain and also one must beware of Lithium poisoning which can be fatal. My son took Lithium for years (he now takes Abilify and clozaril) and once he was exercising and sweating a lot-- and not drinking enough water--which in turn made the Lithium level in his body increase to near-fatal levels in about half an hour. The first symptom of Lithium poisoning is a metallic taste in the mouth. (Lithium is a metal) It also can cause severe acne. Another commonly prescribed med for bipolar is Depakote. Google Lithium and also go to those sites.

Yep. It means missing 24. As far as anything else to me --no. I went for a few years after my DFing, mostly out of habit, I think, and because my parents seemed to feel better when I went. Then, about 8 years ago, I said the heck with all that silliness. Mom asked me about it and I asked her why in the world I should go somewhere and sit in the back like a pariah, and no one can say "hi" or even make eye contact for that matter? She seemed to understand and never mentioned it again. I know if Dad were still alive though he would be hounding me every year.

My poor Mom LOVES that show and she's off to the mem tonight--the only meeting she goes to in a year. Talk about mental conditioning. It wouldnt be so bad if you could at least take a swig of the wine!
I'm going to stay home, watch 24, and drink some wine.
My 18 YO son is going with her, I think. He's not a JW but he's been around it his whole life and occasionally thinks he is "interested". I told him to chug some of it. Poor kid has schizophrenia, and every few months he gets all religious on me (usually right before he needs a medication adjustment) I guess I shouldn't have told him that about the wine...
Three years ago he had some Watchtowers and Awakes, and a copy of the NWT, and was standing on the streetcorners preaching about "the devil". It wasn't funny at the time, poor guy, he wound up hospitalized, but today I have to laugh to think about what the dubs would have thought to see him!

Anyone here drop out of high school pre 1975?

and if so, were you able to go back later on and finish?
i barely made it in under the wire, so to speak, but my three younger siblings had to quit (our dad made them--he said they would be better off "pioneering" but in reality he put them to work in a gardening business he started since he had quit his job and maxed his credit cards--waiting for "the end".

We were of that generation where the WTS said you must be engaged to be married or no dating,
I remember that! Still that way as far as I know. I used to wonder since in the OT and in the eyes of the borg, an engagement meant about the same as marriage, if you could have sex!
Anyway I ran off as soon as I turned 18--threw myself into the "world" and having had literally NO experience with dating or boys, I soon found myself in with a bad group. I tried to come back about 3 years later due to pressure from Dad, but couldn't stand it and faded away. I, of course, had no college and didn't have the presence of mind or the self-confidence to try much on my own, but I did manage to finish a trade school at age 21. I stayed with that trade till age 35, and then, with 4 kids and a divorce, finally went to JC and University.
I think that the rash of high-school drop outs may have been localized, since almost half the kids in my town quit school in the early 70's to pioneer or whatever. So many wasted lives...
In later years when I complained to my Mom, she, of course, said that the society never told people to drop out of school However, in our cong, all the elders, MSs, and their wives, definitely recommended it.
My siblings all eventually got their GEDs as adults, on their own, after discovering that they couldn't even get a job at Taco Bell without a HS diploma. I can remember my poor brothers at age 16, working like dogs in the hot sun, when they should have been in school, trying to plan for a succussful future, ie an education!
My Mom threw a total tantrum when she found out my Dad had pulled them out of school but the elders told her that he was the "head of the house" and his decision stood. Weeners--all of them!

"MAYBE IT'S THE CLOUDS OF ARMAGEDDON!" That pic reminds me of what my Dad said the time in late 1974 when I pointed out a huge bank of storm clouds moving in from the west. He was SO anxious for the big A to start. I almost threw up in disgust. He had quit his job, maxed out all his credit cards, and yanked my younger brothers and sisters out of high school to do yard work to support the family.
My Mom, who's inactive, still harps about "this-wicked-system-of-things-which-is-soon-to-be-destroyed" every time I watch the news with her. Good thing she didn't see that one.

what does this accomplish for them?

There was a really elderly brother who went to almost all the meetings and raised his hand for virtually every paragraph. The conductors knew what he was going to do but they usually, out of kindness I'm sure, would call on him at least once. He would read the ENTIRE PARAGRAPH in a halting way since he was nearly blind. It was so funny. Once the conducter said 'well, that just about sums it up, brother" and I almost got a case of the giggles. One time the conductor snapped to the reader, "don't bother, let's just move on to the next paragraph since we're running behind".

Give Examples of How JWs Try To "Demonize" Everything
by minimus inhere's an example......years ago if a jw wanted a heart transplant or a transplant of any kind, it was considered "cannibalism".
to "prove" that this was oh so wrong, they provided an article about a person who did get a new heart donated to them and suddenly they got the old personality of the donor.
the transplant changed everything about this man and he was no longer the same normal person.......and why??

In general terms "demonize" may just mean to lump something in with badness, however the JWs (and many other fundy religions I might add) put a literal application on the word in almost all situations.
When I was a kid ALL mental illness was considered demon attack and going to a psychiatrist was expressly forbidden. I'm not sure if this was ever in print but it certainly was practiced. Today they have softened considerably at least in the publications but the R&F still believe that any type of psychosis or thought disorder is because of demon influence. I was lurking in a JW site once and was horrified to read a long conversation about one of the women's teenage son. From the way the mom described his behaviour it was obvious that the poor kid was suffereing from either severe bipolar disorder or the early stages of schizophrenia. Instead of encouraging the mom to get him treatment immediatley, they all (including his mother) just sat around talking about how his rock music CDs had caused him to get possessed by demons and he just needed to be yanked out in service and to more meetings. I sometimes wonder just how many JWs die every year due to undiagnosed and treated mental illness.

my favorite one was when a child brought a smurf doll to the kingdom hall and that thing just got up and went screaming out of the kingdom hall on its' own two feet.
i cracked up on that one.. .

My baby brother had the most beautiful brown eyes from birth. (Me and all siblings were pale blues) His JW (ex) wife once phoned me to say that she had learned that my brother was full of sh*t to his eyebrows since his eyes were brown.
