  Street Corner "Witnessing"

  so today was a bit of a lazy monday.

  first i slept in an extra hour.

  then i took my 7 year old son to school, a task usually performed by my wife.

  "Streetwork" was always better for me since I would usually just try to stand there with my face hidden as much as possible so that no one would drive by from school and recognize me. I remember I used to hold the mags up to cover my face. At least until my Dad or some other self-righteous bozo would insist that I smile and greet people and try to engage them in idiotic conversation. That was still better than the humiliation of going to the door, though.

  Once, when I was really young, I actually did wear one of those sandwich boards while out in service at an assembly.

  What To Enjoy About Field Service?

  field service.

  you get up at 4:30 or 5:00 in the morning to make it to the kingdumb hell at 5:30 in the morning (since that feb 2004 kingdumb misery, they want everyone to meet for street work at this time).

  a quick discussion of the text, misapplying it to fit the misery, and then prayer and we're off.

  I grew up in the Eastern Sierra Nevada and once we were doing return visits halfway up the mountain and blizzards were coming down the Eastern face, and we got a few miles up the "hill" when visibility went to zero and the road froze over. Well, there we were stuck on a narrow, two-lane road with a bajillion foot cliff on one side, and we had to back down that mountain, slipping and sliding all over the place. Even though it was cold I remember the elder in the car wiping sweat off his brow.

  I was SO happy we didn't have to make any calls even though I might have DIED!

  Name Things Witnesses Make Big Deals Over

  have you ever seen a witness get absolutely giddy over placing a measly tract with a neighbor and get up on the platform and tell the "experience" of how the neighbor actually said that he'd read it!

  in our hall, they loved to applaud over the dumbest things!

  did you ever have anyone, at the door, say something to you that created a seed of doubt in your mind about the wts?

  something at all that started you thinking "maybe i'm really not in the truth".

  i would be interested in hearing about that.. thanks,.

  I always hated going in field service SO much, and then had terrible guilt and fear over that hatred and embarrassment. According to all the Dubs the householder's antagonism, which is the usual response, just proved we had the "truth". Such faulty logic.

  Once I was out with a young pioneer sister and as we were crossing the street a woman approached us with this bizarre look on her face. We began to greet her and she asked us, "Are you Jehovah's Witnesses?". "Yes," we replied and she instantly began flapping her arms and screeching and moving towards us shouting, "I REBUKE THEE IN THE NAME OF JESUS" over and over. She literally chased us back across the street. Whoa! Scared the hell (no pun intended) out of me.

  That was one of the last times I ever went out in service but that wasn't the only reason I stopped. I think it did make me realize, if even on a subconscious level at that time, that religion and its associated frenzy and hoopla is nothing more than emotional hogwash. (No offense to believers here--this is just how I truly feel.)

  who in your kindom hall got away with the way they acted or things they did, just because they were a jw, and what was it?.

  When I was in junior high there was a school assembly and there was an entire class onstage for some reason or another. This was the class that the current POs daughter was in and I clearly saw her doing the flag salute. Her hand was on her heart, her lips were moving, etc.

  I was nice and didn't say anything--I could certainly understand her predicament, but a couple of years later after we had moved far away when I mentioned this to my parents they told me that I must have just imagined it. Over the years I faded and was eventually DFed and she, of course, was considered a fine sister--married in the truth, pioneered, the whole works.

  When I mention anything like this to my Mom she just says that eventually these people get caught out by means of Jehovah's spirit.

  At my Dad's JW memorial service about 15 years ago I was there with my 15 year old "delinquent" daughter (we were not JWs). She was pretty wild and she told me that she spotted one of her "bad-boy" friends at the service. I guess they both hung out with the same partiers, smoked pot, shoplifted, you name it. They were both shocked and asked each other, "What are YOU doing here?" She said, "It's my Grandfather's funeral" but it turned out he was the son of one of the elders!!

  I was always told that the main reason my daughter had so many problems was because I had "left Jehovah". I wonder what that boy's parents excuse was.

  TV Shows...which ones didn't you get to watch?

  what tv shows didn't you get to watch when you were a jw?

  either because you had to attend one of the five meetings a week or had to go out in field service on the weekend?.

  i remember being pissed off as a kid every saturday morning, because we always had to go out in field service.

  the violent pictures in "My Book of Bible Stories"??? They scared the hell out of me as a kid!!!

  Well that one was nothing compared to the purple Armageddon picture in the old Paradise Book when I was a kid.

  I loved "Twilight Zone" but it came on Friday night so I always had to miss it due to the meeting. Back in my day there were only 3 channels and we didn't even have a TV till I was 11. Yeah, I'm old.

  I read a lot of forbidden stuff, though...

  Found the book "Candy" under my Mom's bed (Go Mom!) when I was 12--read it--and then asked her about it. She threw a huge fit and said I was never, never, to look at that book (didn't know I had already read it, haha). Well, I just had to re-read some of the juicier parts so I looked until I found her new hiding place but this time I was busted.

  it may have been done before, if it has it's being done again.. what worldly music did you listen to?

  i'm talking about the singer/band that made the elders blood boil and got you whispers and stares at the kingdom hall.. i was an eighties child so for me it was madonna!

  the lacy tops and bras, crucifixes, slutty makeup and openess towards sex was the perfect outlet for me.

  My parents pretty much ignored me since I always loved classical music as a kid and didn't geti nto Rock until later and then I kept my preferences to myself.

  One strange thing, though. I loved Stravinsky's piece "The Rite of Spring". My Dad had built this huge HiFi system with a speaker about five feet tall and wide and it had a tremendous bass. I would crank up the volume and lie on the floor in front of this speaker, press my hands into my eyeballs in order to make those flashing colors appear, and roll back and forth, pretending that dinosaurs or something like that were trying to trample me. (Disney's "Fantasia" used that piece for its dinosaur section).

  Well, my Dad busted me once--for obvious reasons I didn't hear or see him coming--and he wanted to know what the hell I was doing. I was about nine or ten at the time. When he saw the music I was listening to he said that I was opening my mind to "demon influence" and forbade me to listen to that LP anymore--and no rolling on the floor like a heathen, either. I did it anyway but was just more careful not to get caught.

  My little brother, when he was about twelve, really loved the song "In the Year 2525" and asked my Dad if he could buy the 45. Well, my Dad took him to the store and asked to listen to that song. After he heard it he turned to my poor brother and said, "No son--this song will turn you away from the Truth".

  at circuit and especially district assemblies so many witnesses take.

  notes of what was being said at such a feverish pace that i would ask.

  myself: "what are they hearing that i am not hearing that is so important.

  I used to take notes to alleviate boredom. I had to be really careful, though, not to let anyone see my notes, since they were mostly doodles and poems. I always destroyed them ASAP or had a "scripture list" to show my Dad.
