hippi's right,he won't need higher education as a JW. The ministry school will teach him all the book/magazine selling techniques he'll need to know. My son left the 'trooth' joined the Army to help him get an education,,,,from pioneering to paratrooper, he says best thing he's ever done lol. Tina

I too felt that way in the beginning. In fact even before I re-registered,I had lurked and saw some rather unkind comments about what to do when the h20'ers came to town.
I mentioned my concerns on the old board,after seeing these comments. I also mailed Simon,at that time, regarding the negativity shown by those posters. But I must say,from the very beginning,waiting ,7/9,and simon were open,welcoming and kind. They encouraged me to come over here in fact!
And then as some of the others got to know us,I felt more and more welcomed.But don't doubt your perceptions,because there still are some who resent us being here. I see and sense their coldness by their lack of interaction on ANY post written by former h20'ers and by their lamenting about the changes.Growth and change are difficult for some.Like Java said,don't take it personally,it's their problem. You posts have helped so many and touched the hearts of them too. I read everyone of your posts,I learn from them,and your insights!
It's not easy being 'the new kid on the block',but with time I hope it all works out positively.
The only abusers here are the trolls,with their multiple identities.
And the very few who are taken in by them,and defend them,thinking they are doing a service to the board,when the reality is they feed and entertain the trolls with their stupidity-but like I said that is only a very very few.
These troll defenders call some of us feather headed broads, fools,uncaring unkind,non-nurturung,tell us to shut up and sit down,tell us to leave the board, and many many other nasty names and labels,(and they call this openminded,tolerant, warmth ,lol yeah right)they fortunately showed their true colors.These are the one/s I would encourage you to avoid,as they find out-spoken women a threat to their fantasy of male domination and control.(unless you respond to them with the 'proper' groveling and scraping they expect) No one (thinking person anyway)misunderstood what they saw and read, regarding what most of the world today considers an immoral view of women.

When I first saw that,it helped me immensely. There's so much information coming at us, an overload at times. Using that as a formula,helps me sift thru it. Skepticism is a major weapon against irrationality. Almost every irrational claim can be defeated by proper analysis. It saves a lot of work and time(for me anyway)lol.

a very good friend of mine whos also a professor of english literature and humanities at a large, well-known university is also a libertarian!
he is quite a remarkable person, who has written extensively on many and varied subjects including a book on the titanic disaster, ayn rand, jehovahs witnesses, and isabel paterson, a contemporary of ayn rand.
he knows more about jws than even most informed apostates, although he has never been a jw.

I too admire Rands committment to reason. The big flaw in her philosophy(for me anyway) is that morals/morality can be held to some absolute standard or criteria,because morality is a human construct and varies socially and culturally.

Skepticism gets a bad rap when all it is ,is using logic and reason when evaluating new ideas and concepts.
I've seen people who've left the wts,not developing this much needed skill to be taken in time and again by other charlatans,pseudoscientific claims,pop psychology..it's sad.

what is the best way to deal with those who are leaving the wts?
no doubt everyone is different - some may feel empowered in a way by finding the truth about the truth, others may have that "shattered faith syndrome.
" tonight i talked to someone who was also dealing with a drug problem along with depression, and i just didn't feel it was the right time to start questioning all the wts doctrine.

What chat rooms are these? And what's wrong with debate? Debate is the free exchange of ideas. You did give sound advice to the person. If they're suffering from drug addiction,depression,first and foremost they need to get medical attention,and then actively pursue recovery......by participating(physically,not cyberly) in the apropos group and therapy.One of the aspects of substance abuse recovery is to learn to interact socially,as isolation is a factor in 'using'. Those socialization and interacting skills can't be accomplished on a computer.
It's been found that many individuals use drugs/alcohol as a form of self-medication for undiagnosed mood/mental disorders.
My personal opinion is that 'shattered faith' can be addressed a bit later,after one has been grounded in recovery for a while. As they say in AA/ NA-First things first! regards,tina
