  Are you asking about memes? They are cultural particles, mind viruses, thought genes, and other various socially transmitted information that is replicated and propagated through social interaction. When people only contact a small groups of others in a lifetime, transmission is limited. Mass communication speeds up and amplifies transmission. The internet and cyberspace offer cultural bits and ideas unlimited storage and instant transmission. I am just asking how long before the internet is talking to itself and the human users are beside the point.

  i am amazed at the events surrounding wikileaks.

  it is amusing too, to see an old plot device in fiction now brought to bear on national governments - 'kill me and information will be released automatically'.

  this is not to say i approve of everything julian assange has done - but i think it is possible it could have a profound good effect on world peace ( believe it or not!).

  I was just thinking of the uncanny parallel between the reaction of the U.S. gov't to the documents leaked/released by wikileaks and the reaction of the WTS to the leak of their confidential document, the new elder's book. Both reacted in alarm, threatened legal sanctions, and clampled down, or tried to clamp down, on the sources of dissemination. The information wants to be free, but those whose power is threatened by that freedom sure do not want it. The wikileaks docs by themselves are unlikely to be the ruin of the U.S. government anymore than R. Franz's book or the distribution of the elder's manual will topple the WTS. What scares them though is the loss of control over their 'own' information.

  strange comment from elder at the meeting today

  todays watchtower was especially nauseating but during the study one of them made the comment concerning the big a " jehovahs timetable is not contingent on all nations being saturated by the good news".

  the study conductor reafirmed his point and then continued.. wait a fuggin minute!

  there are 1.4 billion chinese on the earth and only 40 million profess christianity.

  At a talk I remember from a number of years ago, probably in the 1980s, I heard a Bethel speaker offer an explanation for the lack of WT/JW success in Asian countries by calling upon John 21: 3-11.

  That tells that after Jesus’ death, Peter went fishing all night but caught nothing. Then the resurrected Jesus came and told them to cast their nets on the other side of the boat, where they caught “multitudes” of fish.

  Supposedly that means that some fishing spots are just empty, but Jesus knows where the fish really are—in the Western nations, of course. So then, all you JW fishers of men, stop worrying about preaching to all those Chinese and Indians. God knows they aren’t going to listen anyway. Just keep knocking on doors where Jesus (the GB) tells you.

  I am about to begin my second year of grad school with a 4.0 gpa. Over the summer, I was invited to assist one of my professors on an ongoing book project. That has been an amazing opportunity, one I never could have imagined myself having during my three decades as a JW. This is real research...the kind that not only examines existing materials for understanding and information, but also is meant to generate new insights and ideas. How different from the sham research one does (or is supposed to do) as a Witness. I am in my mid-fifties

  Tempur - pedic mattresses

  if you do, are you satisfied with it?

  I changed from sleeping on a waterbed (for over 20 years) to a Tempurpedic, and I am very happy with the new mattress. I have been sleeping on the Tempurpedic for about a year, and I would not go back. I, too, have back problems. The Tempurpedic has not cured me, but I do find it better for my back than any other mattress I have slept on, waterbed or innerspring. The most notable aspect of sleeping on a Tempurpedic is that you do not get pressure points where you have to turn over because of discomfort from laying on an arm too long or whatever.

  Thanks for posting this on YouTube. I was a JW from 1974-2001, and I never saw nor heard of this film in that time. It is an interesting time capsule of WTBS propaganda.

  Has Anyone Gone Back to College Post 40?

  i'm admitting to be very pissed off.....and bitter.

  i'm sick of having no job security (i know its relative), but mostly because i did not go to college....... has anyone gone back to school post 40?

  I began college at 49. I graduated with my bachelor's degree last spring, and finished my first year of graduate school yesterday. Come on in; the water's fine!
