IDOL WORSHIP
by The Searcher inprobably not an original thought, but after the nauseous watchtower today, i just wanted to say what occurred to me this morning:.
the present governing body is the witnesses given alternative for the modern-day golden calf!.
and most have contributed to its existence!.

When Abraham made the golden calf near Mount Sinai he said " "This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt." (Exodus 32:4)
In effect, the GB is telling everyone: "This organization is your god, who saved you from this wicked system of things and will carry you to the earthly paradise".
Just like Aaron and the Israelites didn't believe that the golden calf was Yahweh himself, but rather, a visible representation of the deity, whom they promptly worshipped, the modern-day Aaron fashioned the organization to be the visible representation of the very God they claim to worship, in effect, rendering the organization said worship.

Interestingly, you only seem to get fussy with it when it's applied to your so cherished rationalist-atheist worldview. Just sayin' ...
And, btw, you DO know that pre-exile judaism isn't technically speaking "monotheistic", right? I would define it as "monadikotheism" ('monadikos' = unique). Errrm, no point in looking it up. I coined that expression today

Actually, it is also true for any kind of ideology, even atheist ideologies such as the ones of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodja.

Adamah,
That was very likely what he had in mind - because it holds true to any religion.

Just a quick thought on an old thread.
What if ...
The "earthquake" [greek: 'seismos', which, besides "earthquake" can also mean a shake, riot, upheaval, comotion] that splits the great city in three may refer to the endless social-military upheavals that have involved Jerusalem, resulting in it today being a "great city" split into three parts, the three so-called monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam?
In this case, Jerusalem would be "Babylon the Great".

c) refuse eternal torment in a literal fiery hell?.

Sorry, GS, I mistook him for another preacher on the line of the "prosperity gospel". I apologize.
"The End of Faith" et al... ok I get it. Thank you

Edit: Carl Harris was the one I had in mind.

Thank you, GS.
Although "feel-good" christianity isn't really what I'm looking into.
