People don't stay put these days either. Everyone is always moving up. You get married, you get a starter home. Then comes a baby. So you need a bigger house. Then that promotion comes thru. You can afford the nicer neighborhood with the better schools. More kids. Bigger house. Then kids go to college. Time to downsize. Few years later, time to retire and get a condo. With all that moving around it's hard to get very close to all those neighbors. Not that we shouldn't try. I'm guilty of not getting to know my neighbors. But I was raised to not have anything to do with neighbors(bad influence and all). I am friendly to my neighbors but I couldn't tell you their names. And that is sad, I guess.

Next-door.
by Vivamus infor the most part of my life, i have lived in this small community, in this quiet street, next to this older couple.
i think i have lived next door to them for almost twenty years.
in all that time the only contact i had with them, was when we both were in our garden at the same time, or when we saw each other at the grocery store.

Absent minded at the meetings
by JH inwhat are the weirdest things you done during a meeting or at an assembly?.
i had a 4 day district assembly at olympic stadium in montreal a few years ago, and i found the meeting so dull that i left and took the subway which passes below the stadium and i went down town montreal all day.
i came back by the subway for the end of the assembly, just in time to say amen.

check watch, look up skirts with binoculars, scribble, write a short story, read a "worldly" magazine, talk to whoever was beside me, look up more skirts with binoculars
I remember using binocs to scan the crowd for the hot looking sisters. As a younger man, there didn't seem to be too many hotties in my district. I went to the District Convention a couple of years ago and lordy! Hotties everywhere! Where the hell did they come from and where were they when I was younger? Why couldn't I be young again and try out some of Francois' tactics? I wonder if any of them prefer older men?

remember the orginization is PERFECT but not the HUMANS WHO ARE IN IT. there for there will be things that go wrong.
An organization can't be perfect if the people running it are imperfect. Even if it is from God, as long as man runs it, it is not perfect. The GB makes decisions for the whole of the religion. Are they perfect? If you say yes, then you are against the Bible. If you say no, then your statement is false.
If it was perfect, how come they change doctrines? I was told my whole life that "millions now living will never die". Well, I've watched my grandparents generation die, I am watching my parents generation die and in a few short years my generation will die. So we are three(or four if you count our children's generation) generations from the generation that wouldn't die. In 1995 the organization changed the meaing of the "that generation". So is the organization perfect now that they changed it or were they perfect before they changed it? They have admitted their imperfection by changing the doctrine no matter if it was right or wrong before or now.

When The Woman Leaves First:
by Englishman inseems to me that when people leave the jw's, that it's not that common for a couple to leave together.. it would appear to me that it it is more usual for the man to leave first, am i right or is this not a correct surmise?.
also, where it is the case that the women leaves without her jw husband, how the hell does she cope?.
i mean, leaving the witnesses is incredibly liberating, probably one of the greatest acts of liberation to be had in the civilised world.

I thought this was gonna be about when women leave their husbands. Then I would say, "alright! she's gone and I got the house!"

If the National Anthem is being sung, you have to sit down, unless everyone is singing it, then you can stand up but not sing.
I never understood why you could not stand respectfully while the anthem was being sung. It wasn't like you were "worshipping" anything.
If you ever wanted to start a scene somewhere, just sit down while the anthem is being sung at a sporting event. You'll definately feel the persecution. I used to always find my seat and then go back out and hang out and get beer/food and hoped to time it so that I missed the anthem. Used to.
If it's not okay to stand for the anthem or pledge of allegiance, how about in a court of law, when everyone is told to stand when the judge comes in? Should a JW stay seated for that? If they are allowed to stand for that, then what's the difference between showing him respect but not the anthem or flag?

United Nations ......eighth world power?
by digderidoo incan someone clarify for me.....is this the new line witnesses are takin?.
whilst i was at my moms about a week ago, she told me that an close elder friend of the family had been discussing this with her tying the un in with the prophecy in daniel.. i didn't particularly want to discuss it with her as it would just open up a can of worms to argue with her, so i nipped the conversation in the bud.
but is this the wts new line of thinking or just the elders individual interpretation.. cheers dig.

The following are the most recent (1988). It seems that designation of the UN as the Eighth World Power has slipped away without an announcement by the WTS of new light.
And in 1991 the WTS applied to become an NGO of the UN without making an announcement. Hmmmmm.

Newbie question about the NGO story
by gcc2k ini've seen the reproductions of evidence in the ngo story.. let's say i was to discuss this matter with a local friendly elder.
i imagine that the following criticisms would ensue:.
1) that is not a real letter sent by the society (saying it was just for a library card, or as the version from portugal said, to gain favor in certain nations).. 2) the reply from the librarian at the un saying that becoming an ngo is not a requirement for a library pass is not real.. my main concern is with the latter.

I'm asking questions that most any thinking JW (no sarcasm please) will ask when presented with this matter.
I can appreciate how your trying to use reason to try to counter against any arguments a JW may present but the fact is most JWs are going to throw up an invisible shield when you critize their beliefs. To me the UN thing is quite simple. The WTS says that the UN is the Wild Beast. The WTS says that any religions that associate with the UN are false religions and thus to be destroyed by God. The WTS for decades put themselves above all other religions and claimed to not be a part of Babylon the Great. Then in the 90s they are caught having a partnership with the Wild Beast, the UN. So by their own criteria, they are a false religion. Now if you go and try to use that against a JW you will get nowhere(unless they are already in doubt).
I too would like to hear from the mega-apostates on this. Am I simplifying this too much? To me it's pretty black and white.
(Can someone named minimus be a mega-apostate?)

Yea, but have you spent 100 hours a month knocking on doors in 90+ degree heat while wearing a suit?
How is that your living all these great past lives has led you to living a life dealing with a religious cult?
Not that I'm doubting you. Just curious is all.
