  Can someone please explain

  i've been out of the org so long that my memory is fading as to exactly what their rationale is for not celebrating thanksgiving.. i was speaking to my dad, whose not a jw but a supporter of it (for my mom's sake), and he was for some reason informing me of my mom and his attempts next week to take a relative (for whom they are caretakers) up to visit my aunt and uncle (several 200 miles away) for thanksgiving.

  but he made sure to inform me how my mom and he would not eat with them (they'd go somewhere, like a movie, for a while).

  again, forgive me, i've been out too long.

  Thanks Blondie, for the quotes - that's what we were taught by the WTBTS.

  Some jw families DO have family get togethers on Thanksgiving.

  Their rational is:

  1. turkeys are cheap then -"It's not our fault that the world turns them into something pagan" (kinda quoting Paul eating food worshipped to idols).
  2. family is off work (as if they're not off on Sat & Sun)
  3. pumpkin pie & sweet potatos are natural foods, & plentiful this time of year - same rational #1.
  4. "We pray to Jehovah everyday with thanks - this day's nothing special to us."

  We have jw families in our area who are doing exactly what other worldy families are doing on Thanksgiving.....but they're not *celebrating* Thanksgiving.

  So I invited our jw mil to our house - using the above rationals & adding "The Smiths have been having a family get together on Thanksgiving for decades - turkey & all the rest." She said she'd "think about it.".....like the old woman was doing me a big favor.

  If my mil doesn't come to our house (next door) - then she'll sit home all day by herself. Yes, it's just one of the plethora of ways the WTBTS keeps their cult members from freedom.

  I did something ...really ...really ...bad

  as many of you know there has been little friction on the board lately do to some recent deletions and exodus to another board.

  in my deep sympathy and feeling of total unconcern about these events i took it upon myself to do something about it.

  i planed my strategy using maps, schematics, long ropes, a 12 year old bottle of single malt scotch and about three minutes of planing.

  Can We Give Words of Support To Simon For This Forum???

  we go through cycles every so often here.

  we get new posters every week and at times we lose some posters.

  when most "newbies" find this site, they are thrilled to be able to express themselves in a way that they could never in a kingdom hall.

  Congratulations for helping to raise such a lovely, talented & nice human.....a great accomplishment.

  I've raised 3 kids & they're all great....but they all went through stages of being a Royal Pain in the Rear. They take after their mother.

  Help - it's drawing me in again

  hmm, not sure how to write this - here goes:.

  i left the jw's about 15 years ago however my 18 year old son is a witness.

  we haven't seen each other for many years and the only contact we have is via the telephone occasionally (all this is cool btw).

  This is such a GOOD QUESTIONS! I've read several books non-jw related about God, "being saved" .....and it occurred to me.....WHO am I supposed to be saved FROM?

  In other words, God is telling me to believe in him & be saved......saved from God killing me.

  The Baptists, etc....believe they'll be saved from God throwing them into a burning Hellfire. The JW's believe they'll be saved from God killing them at Armageddon - which means the Second Death by being thrown in the Lake of Fire....and no resurrection.

  If a parent told a child that "If you obey me, I'll save you (save you from being killed by me.). If you don't obey me, I'll kill you." Well, if a parent said that to a child they're supposed to love anyway, we might wonder about that family, now wouldn't we.

  But somehow......most of mankind feel the need to be saved from God killing them.

  When Simon & I finally actually saw each other.....we just kinda looked at each other - like....this is what you REALLY look like?

  Simon comes across as "just a guy." It's hard to imagine him keeping this forum up and running quite smoothly (overall), having a computer job, keeping up with his lovely Ang & 2 rowdy boys. Quite a bit for just another guy kinda guy.

  Simon's amazing in that a just another guy kinda guy has accomplished a massive victory over the WTBTS.....he's given us a place to go before, during & after leaving the WTBTS. Literally thousands of xjw's have shared in this gift he's given us freely - however long our visit here.

  Thanks Simon......you damned imperfect man you.

  did anyone else see the witness who was interviewed on the today show as a friend of the jackson family in support of michael?

  in light of all the child abuse mess within the organization you would think that they would stay away from that one.

  I was under the impression that M. Jackson was NOT df'd..........but considered da'd.

  If he was df'd - when did this happen? I seriousl doubt that the WT would have wanted to tangle with the money he had at that time. A very powerful inducement to the WT - money.

  I think he was handled like the tennis sisters....just leave it alone.

  If anyone can show anywhere that M. Jackson was officially df'd - I'd appreciate the link.

  i'm not up on legal stuff, but it sure seems to me that this further shows how the wts is positioning kh properties to be exempt from financial impact due to adverse judicial decisions (eccleciastical privilege, and all that stuff).. from septmeber:

  Upon the winding up and dissolution of this Corporation, after paying or adequately providing for debts and obligations of the Corporation,

  So, the KH's belong to the locals as long as they use them as KH's and the locals pay all debts & obligations. The locals bought & paid for the KH & property themselves, while the WT made money from loaning them money.

  the remaining assets shall be distributed to Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, Inc.

  After all debts are paid - THEN the WT owns the KH property or profits therefrom.

  No assets will be deemed to be received by Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York, Inc., until such acceptance is evidenced in writing.

  The WT will not accept the dissolution of any KH until the locals pay all the debts - and then the KH will belong only to the WT - and the WT wants that in writing.

  Interesting - and very profitable for the WTBTS. It also distances the WT from being like the Catholic Church who owns their churches (last I heard.) That way, the WTBTS can say to the government....."We don't rule our followers. They own their own buildings & land - maintaining them."

  saw it tonight.

  seemed a bit hammy at times, but overall i thought it was very good.

  when tom guiry's foot came down on the child's face, i was expecting the camera to cut away, and i was shocked when it didn't; half the theater gasped.

  I have a background of violence - and I liked the movie a lot. Life is violent.

  When there is a physical fight - yeah, it's hard to watch. But taken in context with WHY that violence occurred..........well, it's understandable - if not acceptable. (being politically correct here)

  I found the end much more unacceptable......but understandable.

  Would highly recommend the movie for thinking about later.

  Saw Master & Commander too - was also good....but in an entirely different way. Good adventure movie.
