What was Columbia's mission?

1) If, indeed, they were placing something in orbit for the 'Star Wars program' that was radioactive....well, it wouldn't be in their debris from RE-ENTRY, now would it?

2) The 'Star Wars' program is nothing about 'nukes in space'. In fact, in its current form, it has very little space component at all - it's all ground based advanced missiles and a few space based early warning systems. Something in orbit is very difficult to move quickly, the best place to put defensive weapons is on the ground. And all 'Star Wars' is about is defense - there are much better (IE., MUCH less observable to the entire world) ways of putting a nuke on someone than dropping it from orbit. Sub launched cruise missiles being the least detectable.

(of course, after the fact, you could always tell where the nuke came from ANYWAY, so....)

the space program. I don't expect they will ever create world peace by pointing nukes at everyone from outer space

Well, again, even 'Star Wars' under Reagan wouldn't have had nukes in space - in any case, 'Star Wars' has nothing to do with NASA at all. The US military may pay NASA to carry some stuff up from time to time, but 'the space program' operates for science, not war.

Part of my reasoning is that I believe that they are putting the holes in the ozone by launching rockets into space along with the concord jets.

I honestly, REALLY, hope you are just kidding. Ozone is 0 3 - just another type of atmosphere molecule that rests in a fairly high layer of the atmosphere. This is like arguing you think cars are 'putting holes in the oxygen layer'. It's ridiculous - the atmosphere is dynamic, it swells and moves about. (An interesting tidbit - electronics of all sorts make ozone. Ever smell the back of your monitor? That strange, strong smell when its on? That's ozone!)

What causes the 'hole' in the ozone layer is a combination of factors - global climate change and pollutants of the same weight as ozone taking its place in the upper atmosphere being the primary causes.

Tell that to the starving and homeless here in the U.S. That "drop in the bucket" money would feed and house thousands, but thats not important,right??

Circular reasoning.

His point was that women spend more money on makeup and cosmetics than NASA on the shuttle.

If spending had to stop to feed and house 'thousands', where should we cut it from? Well, let's see, what benefits humanity more, cosmetics or the SPACE PROGRAM?!?!

Granted, I see how it could be a tough call.....After all, when the sun finally goes nova and destroys the planet, millions of years invested in cosmetics will make the earth MUCH prettier than it would be if those funds had been spared the cut instead of the space program. After all, what POSSIBLE good could space travel be to us given we know the earth will be destroyed some day?

Aside from the whole standard JW double-standards?

IE., you have money, you can do whatever-the-hell-you-want-in-life, you don't, you just get to go door to door living strict JW lifestyle trying to bring in new members who DO have money?

It's not so different from scientology, actually, just not as popular with the celebs yet.....

i was wondering, since i was raised a jw, will i ever get rid of the mindset of being a jw.

i have been out for 12yrs, but still find that certain things i say, or think, or react to remind me of being a jw.

like with the current things going on with iraq and the us.

I guess what I'm advocating, and I advocate this for most of lifes problems, is to "intellectualize", rather than "feel". Then you simply won't get these fear based feelings anymore, at least not about anything JW related.

This is exactly good advice. My wife and I left at about the same time, and we were both born and raised -ins. I definately do not get those 'what if they were right' feelings about anything, although I used to. What it took was a LOT of research into their doctrine.

My wife left because she didn't feel the love that the bible said would identify jesus's followers, essentially, left because it 'felt' wrong.

Problem with that is, it's human nature to second guess our 'feelings'. In order to definately leave any trace of doubt behind, you need to research it all into oblivion. Prove every single thing they taught you is false (it really isn't that hard to do). Only then will you truly be free of doubt.

As a result, my wife still has doubts from time to time, although she dismisses them. She's never done any research, though, she doesn't want to. She just wants 'to put it all behind' - which is, of course, not possible unless you think it out and through.

(Note that the brainwashing of conditioned responses will take a LOT longer to get over, mostly because you are conditioned to respond to things you don't even realize. But the doubt will be gone, at least)

peace and security

i'm writing this thread as i was dwelling on something someone said about their mother and "peace and security".

and i thought to myself, aren't the jws the ones who say, "there is peace and security" - i.e.

their religious security, from their effort to 'nail him down'.

JWs and others ae waiting for some outstaning declaration from the wprld that it has accomplished peace and security on their own

The JW interpretation of this always bugged me, too.

After all, wasn't the whole challenge in the Garden of Eden all about the devil claiming man didn't need god? That we would do fine on our own? And the reason god lets all the misery and suffering on the earth - to prove we need him?

This prophecy (as the JWs would have it) essentially boils down to, god will let humans suffer indefinately to prove they need him, until they reach a point where they DON'T, then suddenly 'flip the board over, scattering the pieces', as it were, and stomping off claiming victory.

It just doesn't make sense.

Perhaps to partly address this, and to extend the prophecy 'indefinately' (as it obviously needs to be, as it will never happen), the WT has started explaining that this will be a 'false' peace and security - the nations will declare it, but it won't actually be true peace.

Of course, this allows them to continue the prophecy forever. After all, there will ALWAYS be some groups saying 'true peace' is at hand when other groups claim it is not- it's human nature.

As noted, this isn't really EMP. The microwaves it generates create a pulse of extreme voltage along power lines and electronic equipment. Not quite the same thing as EMP. A microwave pulse weapon WILL toast a vaccum tube quite nicely.

As a simple test - put something in a microwave oven (not a microwave you want to keep) and let it cook for a few minutes. If it still works, it would probably be immune to this weapon.

Uhhhh....nothing eletronic is going to meet that criteria.

Why is the Bible wrong?

this primarily goes out to other agnostics and athiests.

this week i got into two interesting conversations that i will admit that i was ill prepared for.

one was with a jw friend of mine who wanted to know why i thought jw's were wrong.

By the way we are not an "Atheist society" in fact religious revival has occured as recent polls show. As much as 93 percent believe in a God in the U.S This compared to 67 percent in 1972 poll

Kinda OT, but this always does torque me off. It's a very common argument among the bible-thumpers..."Well, prove just doesn't exist because 'our atheist society' is holding it back" or "You just doubt because of the pressure from 'our atheist society'" blahblahblah.

Sorry, but the sad and frightening truth is, most Americans claim to be christian, or at least, believe in god.

There IS no 'atheist majority' here. If all science and archeology finds counters the bible, it's not because of the 'atheists', it's because IT DOESN'T EXIST.

True, EMP weapons have been around for a while, and the principle is similar here. But, the big difference is that this weapon does not seem to be a nuke, so none of the strong negative reaction to setting nukes off in the atmosphere (and none of the radiation). It works like an EMP, only smaller.

Also, sure 3rd world countries use Ak-47s and the like, an Ak-47 won't hurt a tank just rolling past them. Enemy tanks would be toasted by it, even the enemies radios would be no good. Needless to say, enemy missile systems and radars are all done in.
