Hey G,
I don't like the word cult either. It's basically a religious insult. JW's are, by and large regular people who try to do what is right. There are a few that are not nice - even evil, but not more than what you'd expect in regular society. When the obey the teachings of the Watchtower, however, they can have devestating effects on people and families. People do regard the JW's as part of a "high control group". There are a number of things that lead them to conclude so, like this:
I'm .....tired of the responsibility. Tired of the lofty expectations. I've had many worthwhile goals in my life. The one at 6 was just the first. Exhustion is the perfect word. I'm exhusted of trying to live by the rules, ..... And I'm tired of feeling like everyone is pulling in every direction.
This, combined with the blackmail effect that shunning has on your family and social life is powerful.
As far as war's go MOST religions do not advocate war. The Pope was vocal against every war I've seen. Many other religions also advocate "Alternative Military Service" like Watchtower does. These include Quakers, Amish, mennonites Adventists and others. Also, in WW2 Germany, the majority of conscientious objectors were NOT JW's. Of the 13,000 only about 1500 were JW's.
This is just to give you some perspective, not to argue. You will never hear other religions praised in the Kingdom hall. You will only hear praise for JW's and reports of persecution of JW's. This despite that JW's make up only a small miniscule portion of Christians who are persecuted worldwide. Look at the above links. JW's also, are taught not to be generous to non-JW's. This was recently evidenced by the shocking LACK of any substantive responce by headquarters to the devestating Tsunami. Since there were few JW's in this are, they hardly blinked.
Don't take this personally, but I think you need to "man up" and take control of your life. You seem to be drifting in the wind, letting everyone sway and affect you. This is symptomatic of people who have been JW's for a long time.
Remember, this is the only life you know for SURE you have. Quit pissing it away.

With all due respect ljw, doesn't your expressed fears of another's perspective, people spying on you, and your own "thinking ability" and potential conclusions bother you? When you read the Bible do you get the same "boogey man" message that the WT makes of all of its critics?
Do you see why Psychologists refer to JW's as a "High Control Group"?
I was at Bethel too and I served in areas of elevated resposibility along with Bethel 'heavies'. I came to realize that JW's ARE good people, but their religious system has developed into something wholely different from it's beginnings.
Despite JW's being good, sincere people, it's clearly obvious that it is a human inspired organization with all of the associated failings, mistakes and shortcomings of similar human inspired organizations (as you pointed out earlier). That has profound implications doesn't it?

Bethel: Pathway to Apostasy
by Black Man inat the 'big house' you go either one of two ways, company man or apostate.
i think for many that went, it demystified the whole organization and you saw firsthand that there wasn't holy spirit influencing anything - only the muses of sheltered, out-of-touch old men and political bureaucrats.
i work in the corporate world and i saw just as much if not more politics in bethel.

I was always amazed at how the 400 sq foot room shared by 4 guys could go from a complete sh*t hole to "presentable" and actually neat looking in the 10 minutes before morning worship! Just don't open any closets or you might die from the ensuing collapse.

And what exactly do they do with the "evidence"? Do they say, "Hey Bro so-and-so, I found a _______ while searching your room" or "I heard your call about your g-job", letting the person know they were being spied upon?
Yep. And their not ashamed about it at all. Usually it originates from some snoopy housekeeper or neighbors listening in to the music that you playing. Then the Home overseer starts snooping.
My friend had an Instrumental jazz CD titled "Bustin". His home overseer questioned him about the title and what it might be alluding to. Another friend was given a first and final warning to get rid of his Stone temple Pilots, Greenday and Red Hot Chili Peppers CD's. Another Temporary worker was told not to apply again for having Metallica. They also look through your Video collections. All this to allegedly keep Jah's house "clean".

Yep, Bethel did it for me too. If you think the control issues are big in the congregations, just go to Bethel. Home overseers sifting through your personal stuff without your knowlege to find damning items. The litany of rules. Politics. Oh what a creepy little world that is. I think I actually began doubting when one of the Overseers reasoned that Bethel was a "forgleam" of the new system. I almost hurled.

I BEAT THE SPEEDING TICKET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by zman inthanks to all who responded to my thread last month!
i had been busted for 79 in a 65 this ticket made ten in three states so i decided to fight it.

Hey zman - good job... but I think I had you beat back in the day.
I used to travel allot for my work so I constantly got ticketed. I think the most I had was 4 tickets within 18 months (i forget the points system). BUT, check this out... I had ZERO points on my actual license and insurance. Yepper, zippo. If you travel allot too, this is how to do it:
Step 1 Go to Florida and get a Driver License that's "valid in Florida only". Florida is one of the few states that allow people to hold a second drivers license, without surrendering their primary license, that is supposedly only valid in Florida. It's for all of the "snowbirds" who come down every winter to their vacation homes.
Step 2, Use the Florida license for tickets! Once you have you "valid in Florida only" license you can reserve it for the times you get pulled over for speeding. I have yet to see a cop question it. I doubt if they realize or care this little loophole anyway.
Step 3 Use you 'other' primary license for your insurance company.
Step 4 Buy a Radar/laser detector or jammer.

Loving God means OBEYING his commands!!!!!! Are we doing that?
I know, and that's the creepy part! Seriously Def'd, you realize that 'obeying' God in the Bible mean't slaughtering innocent men women and children by the thousands! The Canaanites were attacked because of some promise (unknown to them) made to Abraham. The slaughter of a society because of a promise for Real Estate?? Any reasonable thinking being has to question why they would obey such a sadistic being.
God allows suffering for a reason. The bible clearly tells us why.
God doesn't merely "allow" suffering, he CAUSES of a great deal of it too. Consider, (if you believe the story) he caused the death of Adam and Eve after decieving them, saying they would die "in the day" of their eating the fruit. Well they did not die as Satan correctly alleged. Further they received knowlege that was hidden from them, just as Satan said too. Thirdly, God denied them access to the "Tree of Life" and drove them out of the Garden Causing their eventual deaths hundreds of years later (Gen 3:22)
God caused the murder of innocent men women and children of Heshbon when he caused the King to resist when he "made him obstinate and stubborn so that he might deliver him over to you" Du 2:30 and then encouraged his murderous soldiers to kill, "including even the women and children; we left no survivors." Du 2:34 If God was a person we'd have him tried for war crimes!
Additionally God caused the suffering that exists today because (according to the WT) God wanted to settle an "issue of universal Sovereignty". And, although this issue is not even mentioned in scripture, and he refuses to interact with people, God intends to cause suffering on a massive scale (Billions) when he slaughters people for not figuring out this hidden issue from among the wild and tenous assumptions made by a group of false doomsayers.
Do you want to love someone like this?
