Bill Maher made a good point the other day. When 9/11 happened, those in the media wondered how we could be so trivial and self-absorbed to obssess on sharks, and Gary Condit, and other unimportant matters, and how 9/11 made it seem we would never waste time on such matters again. Remember the phrase, "Oh, that's so September 10th!" to refer to such banalities? Well, Janet Jackson's boob proved them all wrong. It's almost as if 9/11 never happened.

The hyperbole asserting that heaven and earth were made for James' sake is a common saying in Jewish literature. In Sanhedrin IV.5, we thus read: "Therefore, every single person is obliged to say, 'The world was created for my sake.' " The idea is that a single life is like an entire world that is either created or extinguished with birth and death. We also read in Hermas of Rome:
"She [the church] was created before all things; therefore, she is elderly, and for her sake the world was formed." (Shepherd of Hermas, Vis. II.4.1)
It is interesting how each use of the saying streses something different: in the Talmud, it emphasizes the sacredness of human life, in the Gospel of Thomas it is used to underscore the authority of James the Just, and in the Shepherd it is used to establish the antiquity and priority of the Church. This latter use is probably more original because we find a similar meaning in the Testament of Moses, in which the world was created for the sake of Israel: "He created the world for the sake of his people, but he died not make this purpose of creation openly" (Testament of Moses 1:12).

Do you catch yourself still thinking Witness thoughts?
by Leolaia ini was with my boyfriend's family who are jewish.
having grown up as a witness, i always felt closer to jews than most christians (when you think about it there are a number of commonalities, like not celebrating christmas, having a "memorial" often on passover night that talks a lot about the israelites escaping egypt, the whole ot focus of the witnesses instead of on the christ of the nt, etc.).
anyway, it was thanksgiving and my boyfriend's aunt was there who was a holocaust survivor.

Here is my example. I was with my boyfriend's family who are Jewish. She has a serial number tatooed on her arm. And I felt a connection, because I thought of how my people were persecuted and put in the concentration camps too. And then I stopped myself and thought, What "my people"??? In reality, there was no connection; I was not a Witness. But as an ex-JW I felt it emotionally, having grown up with Gestapo and death camp stories, told in the Watchtower and repeated by elders and sisters in restaurants and in field service. Its like the Witness identity, though I have long renounced it, still has its latent effects that surprise me now and then? Anyone still feels deep down that it is a little bit "naughty" to vote (if not a little sinful?)?

Looking Back, How Did You Really Feel About "The Truth"?

I was raised as a JW as well. I totally believed the doctrines about the trinity, hell, Armageddon, the overall JW doctrine as Bible-based and a modern restoration of apostolic Christianity. One big stumbling block was the doctrine about the resurrection which even at the age of 7 I knew did not make sense. So I developed my own private belief about the resurrection and the survival of the spirit (that is, not the soul) after death. Although I thought the doctrines were mostly true, I never believed in the teachings about the organization, being the faithful and discreet slave, prophesied in Revelation, etc. I always knew the organization was imperfect and deeply flawed (especially with respect to the aging, out-of-touch leadership, and the pettiness and un-Christian attitude I saw), and would make fun of it with my other Witness friends. But I thought it had honest, genuine faithful leaders, and my attitude would change when I discovered through my research how dishonest the Society had been on such matters as the increase of earthquakes, the intellectual dishonesty in the Creation book and the Trinity broshure, etc., and the release of the Revelation Climax book pretty much sealed it in my mind that the JWs did not have the truth. I never was in "love" with it, hated all the meetings, hated going in field service, hated having to be different from the other kids in school, and hating the hypocrisy that I saw. That was the time I was reading the gospels a lot and really appreciating how much the Society was like the Pharisees, and comparing Jesus saying not to judge others with the Society's teaching that the preaching work was judging the world in terms of whether they accepted the "truth". The self-righteousness and presumptuousness I saw really stung me. I was reminded of Matthew, when Jesus rejects the "workers of lawlessness" though they claimed to preach and perform works in his name.

this is from the freeminds website.
i love reading quotes in their full context and realizing how much the "brothers" have chopped them up to suit their own purposes.
