The power of belief systems
by donkey inmost of us here have been jw's.
most of us believed it was the truth.
inherent in that is the belief that we would be persecuted and this would be one of the signs that we were the true religion.

Most of us here have been JW's. Most of us believed it was the truth. Inherent in that is the belief that we would be persecuted and this would be one of the signs that we were the true religion.
Thus ask yourself: "As a JW, would I have been willing to die for my beliefs if confronted with a life and death situation such as the blood issue or neutrality?" You can say what you like now but almost without exception the answer to that question is "YES". I answer the same way myself (http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/forum/thread.aspx?id=44230&page=2&site=3)
What I think about now and I wonder if others have similar reflections is: how do you feel about the fact that you would have been willing to die for a belief system, which you now consider false? If you believe in something else or a variation of the original belief - then is your belief strong or wavering? Would you be willing to die for your current religous/spiritual beliefs? If so, how do you honestly reconcile the fact that perhaps your new beliefs might be false too (you have to admit you can be wrong - you believed falsehood before - none of us is infallible especially with something as innocuous as beliefs).

Why did I fall away from the truth???
by JNS2 inno, i don't think it is the "truth" any more, but for 22 years i did.
that is what makes this so very difficult to come to grips with, admitting that i wasted all that time as a mindless drone.
(borg) anyway, i've been trying to analyze why i have fallen away.

Apologies in advance Simon for some bad language - I cannot express myself any other way without portraying how strongly I feel:
What eats me so much till this day is that I was willing to die for beliefs I held as a JW. I was threatened with my life and I had clear visions of possibly having to die for the faith I used to have (sorry but I refuse to disclose any further details on my history for personal reasons - suffice to say I still suffer from nightmares from what happened over 20 years later). I would have been dead and gone for nothing but lies and unproven beliefs. It is so fucked up and I was such a fuckup for believeing in this religious fairy tale bullshit. I absolutely despise religion now - it is the greatest evil ever devised by man. I wish people could see how powerful belief systems are, what they will make people do and what they will make people go through (all at the huge risk of the belief being WRONG).

ORIGINAL LIFE SPAN VS. CLONING!
by Blueblades inwith all this interest in cloning, i got to thinking, was it really god's intent that we should live forever in the flesh.were we to enjoy a life span that would never end?
is it true that the length of the life span of those mentioned in the bible were as long as mentioned there?
for example:the potentiality of adam to live forever in the flesh, yet, lived for 930 yrs.methuselah said to be the one who holds the record for the longest life span in the flesh,969 yrs.noah 950 yrs.shem 600 yrs, then the life span drops drastically!

Blades,
I believe that the answer is yes. In the future we will be able to live forever. Technology will enable that.
I see no evidence to support the fact that humans are not simply "chemical compositions". I have never found evidence of a soul or a life force. This leaves only chemistry to deal with and as technology progresses and DNA is reconstructable to larger and larger degrees and we can create life through chemical processes we will be able to sustain it too. I only hope it might occur before I become worm food.
I know - sounds cold... but for me the question is: barring unforseen cosmic events and/or self destruction what potential does man have? The answers are inspiring to one such as myself.

Think of how many religions attempt to validate themselves with prophecy. Think of how many people rely on these prophecies, however vague, however unfulfilled, to support or prop up their beliefs. Yet has there ever been a religion with the prophetic accuracy and reliability of science? ... No other human institution comes close. -- Carl Sagan

Do Doctors Play God?
by Cassiline ini just read an article about a baby born at prematurely at 26 weeks and the doctor who tried to save him.
the question was asked, should this baby be saved?
the child was born at 26 weeks, (14 weeks early) with one kidney missing, a partial esophagus, no anus, tracheal hole, malformed, exposed spinal cord, multiple abnormalities of the heart.

Interesting story Cassi.
In reading it I recalled the Carl Sagan essay on abortion. In that he quoted one of the old arguments "we become human when we are able to survive outside the womb". So since medical technology can enable babies to live outside the womb sooner (eg premies) has medicine changed the point at which a fetus becomes a human?
Carl saw this clearly...it is a pity pro-lifers have their religious blinders on and cannot deal with reality.

Interesting huh?
These ancient folks had no technology to protect them against disease or viruses yet they lived for hundreds of years? Either evolution occurred and viruses got to be mean mothers or otherwise the ages in the "book" are baloney....
Or both!!! This is just more evidence that the Bible is pure Donkey-doo!!

Hard work does pay off in the end :)
by WildHorses ini was just sitting here going over my finances and, if murphy's law doesn't come into play.. when i first started this cleaning service, i thought i would never get it built up, and a few times thought i would end up losing my home.
my mom, has on a few occasions, asked me to move to mn to live with her, because she knew my situation.
however, i was determined that i was going to make it on my own.
