Maybe because in NT books written after the fulfillment of those words around the "generation" Jesus is reported to have promised to come again?
Maybe because the type-antitype, shadow-reality concepts became reigning principles within the church??
its plain as day what jesus said was to those people standing in fornt of him and it was for one generation only .the prophecies were not about the end of the world but the end of the old jewish system of things.
why do people today since the 1700s put themselves in the shoes of the ones jesus was talking to.
i quote "trtuly i tell you, some of you standing here will not die until you see the son of man coming in his kingdom".
Maybe because in NT books written after the fulfillment of those words around the "generation" Jesus is reported to have promised to come again?
Maybe because the type-antitype, shadow-reality concepts became reigning principles within the church??

Thx for the post.
i recently had a casual conversation at a bar on the subject of atheism.
they used the expression "greek scriptures".
i didn't pursue it but it made me wonder..
Terry's right. If you could talk to first century Christians and ask them what their "Geeek Sciptures" were, they would produce the Septuagint. That was the "Greek Bible" back then. The term "Hebrew Scriptures" is commonly used outside of the JW world because some people don't want to offend the Jews by calling that portion of the Bible the "Old Testament." It implies it's now longer in force or no longer good any more. So you will hear/see some use of "Hebrew Bible" instead of "Old Testament" outside of JWs, both by Jews and non-Jews.
But the "Christian Greek Scriptures" phrase has got to be another Freddie Franz idosyncrasy, an attempt to distance JWs from "Christendom." I once read that article by George Howard about the tetragrammaton in the New Testament. In it he uses the term "the Greek Bible." He means the Septuagint and the New Testament combined. He does not use the term "Christian Greek Scriptures." That would definitely mark one as JW, but it's not the same as simply saying "Greek Scriptures."

The point is that COs will now appoint/delete elders/MSs directly and not have to wait on the Service Department at Patterson. Power to the people, er, CO!!

TO ALL CONGREGATIONS
Re: Adjustment in process for appointing elders and ministerial servants
Dear Brothers:
With regard to Paul and Barnabas’ visit to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, Acts 14:23 states: “They appointed elders for them in each congregation, offering prayer with fasting, and they entrusted them to Jehovah, in whom they had become believers.” Titus and Timothy evidently are also recorded as taking part in appointing elders in the congregations. (1 Tim. 5:22; Titus 1:5) In accord with this Scriptural precedent, the Governing Body has decided that effective September 1, 2014, circuit overseers will be responsible for the appointment and deletion of elders and ministerial servants. Additional information will appear in the November 15, 2014, issue of The Watchtower.
We request your continued prayers on our behalf as the preaching work is speeding up and more and more people are beginning to worship God by going to “the mountain of the house of Jehovah.” (Isa. 2:2) Please accept an expression of our warm Christian love.
Your brothers,
c: Traveling overseers PS to body of elders:
Please arrange for this letter to be read to the congregation at the first Service Meeting after its receipt or after the next Watchtower Study, whichever comes first. This postscript should not be read to the congregation, and the letter should not be posted on the information board. If the circuit overseer is visiting your congregation, he will read this letter at the conclusion of the next congregation meeting. At circuit assemblies and special assembly days, the letter will be read by the last speaker on the program at the conclusion of his talk. We would appreciate your keeping this matter confidential until the letter is read to the congregation or circuit.
In due course, further direction regarding the aforementioned adjustments will be provided to all bodies of elders.

No probs DLing for me. I hope it's OK to post it like this, that I'm not violating any forum rules...
i'm a non-witness who is doing research on jehovah's witnesses (and has been for several years).
i just got out of a meeting with an elder and his wife.
i'm still somewhat stupefied.
The problem is that you're trying to be reasonable and appeal to reason. Once one accepts the lone belief that trumps all other human thought, that is, that the GB of JWs are the sole mouthpiece of the ultimate God of the universe, no other sort of reasoning matters. In fact, all other reasoning that comes from any other viewpoint is not just erroneous, but inspired by Satan the devil. That, of course, includes atheism.
Although they will be viewing you as lost, the mere fact that they were able to speak with you will, in their eyes, give you a glimmer of hope. It doesn't really matter what they said to you. From their perspective, they will be looking to see if Jehovah is drawing you to "the truth" (in the spirit of John 6:44), whether he is opening your mind and heart to whatever "truths" they shared with you (whether on-topic in your eyes or not). That's their perspective. I hope that helps you grasp your, understandably, baffling experience.
As to their lying, they may truly feel that they were not. One possibility here is they now honestly believe that years ago they were not teaching that the end was around the corner, even though they indeed were teaching that. Self-deception can be strong.
a friend from the other end of the country just 'phoned and told me that a couple of days ago two elders knocked on his door.
he has been out for four or more years.. they told him it was c.o's visit, and the governing body have asked them to call on those whom they no longer see at the k.hall.. i guess this is an easier "field" than knocking on doors that never open, or where they are told "not interested".. my friend bill though, was not such an easy call.
apparently he managed to get in about 1914 being rubbish, the bible not being the word of god, because we cannot trust it, 1919 being rubbish as to the choosing of the fds and several other telling points.. i liked particularly that he said to them they were rather hypocritical asking householders to examine their faith, when jw's were simply not allowed to !.
This is a new program for the C.O. visit... call on all the inactive ones in the congregation. This will happen now twice a year.
Like CBG I must say thanks for the heads up. More reason to go further underground...
now that pastor russell is persona non grata, i was wondering how this movement ever started.
i always find it surprising that educated people refuse to read the bible.
they will just follow someone.
JeffT, spot on! The 19th century was rife with such Protestantism. Witness the Mormons, Adventists, Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone (Disciples of Christ); on and on the list could go. A similar thing was going on the British Isles. Hislop's The Two Babylons is another example.
BOTR: I doubt that Charles Russell will ever be a persona non grata among Witnesses in the know. He will always be viewed fondly, however out-of-step his thinking may now appear.
i was reflecting on some of the traditional cults mentioned in hassan's book that recruit members and have them move into some kind of compound, give up their worldly lives, possessions, leave their families, etc.
and work solely for the furthering of the cult... isn't that exactly what "going to bethel" is?.
when you become a bethelite, you take a vow of poverty and devote your life to the org.
Imagine if everybody who was a dedicated JW had to move into a Bethel-like setting.
Isn't that the new order? I think some Witnesses think so...
see the article here:.
http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2014/04/18/the_wellcome_trust_is_funding_research_to_make_human_blood_from_stem_cells.html.
blood could become much less scarce if a british research group succeeds in bringing a version made from stem cells to human trials, and eventually to market.
Love this:
the JW Talmud
The blood issue is difficult since so many have given their lives for it. The GB is no doubt very afraid to change that one. The backlash would be severe, far more so than on any other issue they've had. Who knows though? This COULD give them a way out. We'll have to wait and see.
Thx for the share. I think someone else has posted something about this here already.
