Wow, I was just reading the online section of my old hometown newspaper. They have a section about famous and contoversial people who are either from that town or who visited it.
There were several people mentioned in that column that were ministers and that the town hosted the National conference of Free Will Baptists back in 1941.
But half way down the article it mentioned Alexander Hugh Macmillan and that he gave a talk at the local theater in 1923. It mentioned his involvement with the Bible Students. I was surprised because his name and also the JW's were mentioned alot in that article.
My knowledge of him is sketchy, so what do you know about him? Did he remain a JW until his death?
The article was quite detailed, but something tells me there is more to this man, than what was stated.
I find it odd that he chose to come speak at that town back in the 1920's, why? I wonder if my great grandfather was responsible for inviting him there? I will have to ask my grandma and see if she knows any details.
Seeing this article was the biggest shock, as I just never expected to see it in that paper. I am also shocked that I was not aware of this piece of history of my hometown.

Yeah it is actually so cool. Even on some boards where the majority of posters are of a different political party than me, the people are mostly respectful, and we have had alot of good, productive dialogue.

Alot of people have been encouraging me on, and as always there is a small group of people who like to ridicule, but they are quickly rebuffed by the majority.
These boards mostly mirror the social demographics of my country, and for once I am in the majority and not the minority. -

Even though I live in Tennessee, my 2 favorite stations are WSGS 101.1 in Hazard Kentucky and WSIP 98.9 in Paintsville Kentucky.
I listen to WSGS everytime while passing through Kentucky on the way to Ohio.
WSGS plays alot of old country and Western Swing at night.
Both stations have extensive church programming on sunday.
Both stations have obituary time too.
WSIP also has the call in "Swap Shop", where you can call in and advertise things for sale. -

lots of anger here.....we gotta let it go guys!........
by oompa inat least i gotta let it go...it is the only chance to save my marriage.
have you ever noticed how so many poster here mostly have bitter/angry comments?
of course we all have good reasons for that, but part of my goinsolo marriage counseling is to just breath deep and start letting go of my anger and frustration....esp related to my desire and efforts at waking up family and friends.

Well my anger towards the JW's has almost subsided, in fact I can now pass the local kingdom hall and barely even give it a glance. I think it reached a peak about 2-3 years ago. If the JW subject comes up, I still will tell them what I think, but as for my activism, it has almost ended.

Recession? I didn't see it this weekend. What's your take?
by restrangled ini'm just wondering if everyone has been holding back until the shopping season for christmas.
it was like everyone one was pent up waiting to shop.
(maybe paying off credit cards for months and worrying about the future).

Restrangled, to answer your question, I think it is mostly over inflated.
The media tries to portray everything as so bleak (kinda like the watchtower does)
Everywhere I go the stores are packed, the restaurants are packed, the roadways are packed.
The trucking companies are booming, the railroads are running day and night.
Everyone I know has a job, I don't know one person who has lost their home over the mortgage crisis.
Sure there are businesses that are shutting down, and the media loves to play that to the hilt, what they don't show you is all of the new businesses that are popping up.
The media seems bent on giving people a pessimistic attitude about the world. They make their money on the idea that "the sky is falling" -

Brothers who were Gay but couldn't admit/accept it! Did you have some?
by Witness 007 ini have come to realize that being gay is something you are just born with....so why judge them if it's like being born a certain race.. a brother g_____ i knew was a zealous pioneer pushing 43 years old.
he never married though the sisters thought he was dreamy and he had plenty of offers....."she's not for me" he would always, many times tell me some excuse.
he loved to give only brothers a big hug...say if you gave a public talk or something.
-
Junction-Guy
Well Witness007, I don't know about that guy, but unless you have some tangible proof that he was gay, I wouldnt be so sure about it. In the JW world singleness is highly commended and seeking out a marriage partner is considered a distraction in their service to Jehovah. Perhaps he bought into that line.
Gay or not, he is still outside the norm compared to society in general. That doesn't mean he is bad, just different. -

Giving Credit Where It's Due To Witnesses
by minimus inmy mom has had to go to a number of doctor's visits that have at times kept her waiting for 4 hours.
many witnesses have responded to her needs by calling her and helping her out.
i've thanked a few who have greatly assisted her.

There are good decent JW people out there, I have even met a few in the past 2 years. The religion may be flawed, but there are good people in it, and hopefully they can escape it someday.

Michael Jackson converts to Islam
by AndersonsInfo inmichael jackson's converts to muslim faith...and becomes mikaeelto some he's lost his mind, now he loses his religion...friday 21st nov 2008.
...more michael jackson .
michael jackson's latest crazy stunt involves reportedly converting to islam on the eve of his court battle with an arab sheik.. the king of pop - who was brought up as a jehovah's witness - is said to have sought solace in the faith after speaking to an unnamed songwriter and producer.. a source tells the sun, they began talking to him about their beliefs, and how they thought they had become better people after they converted.. "michael soon began warming to the idea.".

Vinny, the same thing can apply for the XJW world too. Everything can be all hugs and kisses until someone disagrees with what the majority believes.
