The JW's never really discouraged me from getting an education, strangely enough. The Australian public school system did a damn fine job of killing my interest in just about everything though...

Did being a JW stifle your ambition?
by ballistic indid being a jw stifle your ambition?
did not needing to plan for the future affect your career choices and your consequent wealth?.
i'm not simply talking about following the advice to not take up an education which has been discused many times, but i'm going further to say that those brought up in "the truth" had their whole philosophy moulded and shaped in a way which never searched for more or wanted more; a non-materialistic outlook.. now some may still say materialism is evil, or that being brought up this way leads to a more content life.. the cynics, like myself, will say that keeping people 'happy but poor' is the genius of the rich.. i've had some success after leaving the org, after taking up education and so on, but it has taken time.

Meetings in hiding places
by JH inif one day the government would put an end to jw meetings, how do you think the watchtower would get organized to keep meetings going?
they told us that meetings would be held in houses or in secret places.
i dont know of any house big enough to accommodate 80+ people.

Worldly Music to Avoid
by Nosferatu ini remember, one of the songs i was told was a bad song, was bridge over troubled water.
apparently, it's about drug use.
what are some of the "worldly" songs you were advised to quit listening to that seemed harmless?edited by - nosferatu on 16 january 2003 13:39:50.

I was informed by my mom that I could no longer watch it because one of the people was gay; not the character, mind you, the actor!!
Yeah, I've got a JW uncle who won't watch movies or TV shows if any of the actors are known to be gay. He even refused to watch a certain movie because a different version of it years ago had a gay actor in it. Sheesh. But at least he doesn't try to stop anyone else from seeing them, so it's no big deal really. Just a bit strange.

Jesus died on a stake?
by SwedishChef inyou've got to love the watchtower.
they must think that the general population has no bible available to it.
while scrolling through a list of their beliefs on the official site, there was one that really caught my eye because of its sheer ludicrousness.

By the by, Mel Gibson is filming a movie "The Passion" about the last twelve hours of Jesus' life. It's filmed entirely in Latin and Aramaic and Gibson is fighting the idea of using subtitles. It's supposed to have a particularly gory crucifixion scene. Might prove an interesting work.
Some things in life are bad. They can really make you mad! Other things just make you swear and curse. When you're chewing on life's gristle, Don't grumble - give a whistle! And this'll help things turn out for the best.... And.... [ all together now ] Always look on the bright side of Life... Always look on the bright side of Life...

C of C Just Arrived
by eyeslice incrisis of conscience has just been delivered by mail to my office.
i wouldn't dare let it be delivered to home in case my wife found out.. i am still "in", so the question is, should i read it?
and if so, are my days as a jw numbered?.

I had never heard of Ray Franz until some time after I left for my own reasons, so what he had to say didn't shock me quite as much as it might have if I were still "in". For some reason, reading about all the politics and stuff that went on within the organization didn't affect me that much. It was the little things that got to me... like a brief footnote at the bottom of one page, in which he mentioned that at one point the WTS had a large surplus of one particular publication, so to shift them they just re-scheduled it to be studied again at the Book Study. It was only after reading that that I realized I had been used. Strange but true.
But like SOJ says, it won't necessarily turn you against the WTS if you're determined to stay in. It just provides a bit of an insight into how the organization is run, from someone who has actually had a hand in running it.

Has anyone played a JW song backwards?
by Pleasuredome insome modern music has had subliminal messages encripted into it.
some people may or may not believe that, but i'm sure the wts has written of the 'danger' of subliminals in rock music etc.
has anyone ever tested the wts kingdom melodies to see if that has any subliminal messages?

Not trying to defend the WT or anything, but what I don't understand about the whole "plural nails = cross" argument is this: What's to stop them from using more than one nail on a stake?

Bathroom breaks
by freedom96 ini remember watching people so well back when i was growing up and going to the meetings.
one thing as i look back on was the ban on the bathroom.. you just did not leave your seat to use the bathroom.
you went before the meeting started, or after.

To get scorned for using the bathroom?!? Come on!
I remember seeing a badly-mimed drama at an assembly once, in which a father and son were in their living room watching TV or reading or something after a meeting. Suddenly, the father says -
father Son, do you need to go to the bathroom?
son Uh... no, Dad. Not really. Why?
father I think maybe you do. Off you go. Now, please...
son Ooookaaaayy.... [frowns slightly and walks off]
<ten minutes later>
father Time to go back to the bathroom, Son.
son Whut? I just went ten minutes ago.
father Yes I know, best not to wait too long. Go.
son Riiiiighht.... [walks off looking even more confused]
<ten minutes later>
father Hey, Son...
son Yeah, allright, I'm going... [gets up to walk away] WTF is this, anyway?
father Well, it seems that during the meetings you need to take a bathroom break every ten minutes, so it shouldn't be any different here at home. You do need to go that often, don't you...?
son Okay, okay, I get the message...

LOL ... no, I guess I just read enough of them to spot the formula. This could be a fun challenge for another thread - see who can come up with the most convincing "Fake Watchtower Article".
