If you could say just one thing to help free a JW...
by Mr Ben ini guess it's seven years or so since i left, and back then i knew exactly what i would say when members of my cong would come and see me about my absence.
strangely, no one, not one, came and talked about my sudden absence.
i had actually planned a small speech that i could use when friends or the elders eventually came to see me.

My wife and I are involved the Lion's Club. We are helping clean up and restore the city park. This evening we have relatives in town for our daughters high school graduation tomorrow. None of the JW relatives are here of course. Our daughters witness grandmother sent a graduation card with $5.00 enclosed along with some bullshit words. This lady has not so much as said hello to our daughter since 1996. Our daughter was really pissed.

Something I Never Understood About The Importance of Meeting Attendance
by minimus inwhy is it soooo important to be a regular meeting attender when you can read the publication simply, at home?
they don't want you elaborating on the material.
they don't encourage doing extra research.
-
Thechickennest
All the new published material needs to be distributed. What would the poor sales brothers that are standing in those concession stands at the Hall do if someone did'nt pick up all the new magazines and new books? Also, persons need to drop all the funds from donations of prior and future sales in the contribution box labeled for that purpose. How could the "faithful and discreet publishing company" survive if people never came to the Hall to buy more stuff?

If you could get back the time spent in WT what would you do differently?
by Thechickennest inis it too late to start over and pursue your dreams?
where would you likely be in life if it wasn't for the time spent being one of jehovah's witnesses?
was there anything salvagable from the your former life in the jw cult?.

Easyreader1970:
It looks as though you are going take your life back. Excellent! I am extremely happy for you! As some one else mentioned, "Don't do it for money, do it for yourself"....If you can start a new business with your talent that's OK too. When you are up and going I hope that you will send me a PM about the website. Do not set your goals so high that you will be discourged if you do not at first get everything accomplished that you hoped to. Take things at your own pace and don't be too hard on yourself. We are trained as witnesses to beat ourselves to death with guilt, that having been said, just don't do go there while reaching out for your long time dream. Good luck freind!

watchtowers at my threrapist's office
by loosie inwhen i go to my threrapist's office, while waiting in the waiting room, i look for wts and awakes.
when i find them i write on them a website either this one or silent lambs or i just write "this group is a cult" across the front of it.. one visit i found like 12 wts.
i didn't have time to scribble a note on all of them before my therapist called me in.. well this week.

I laughed and laughed when I read your topic!....I am a GM for a business that has a witness customer that is always leaving behind tracts, etc. I instruct my employees to throw away all religious materials found on the property. Maybe your therapist is trying to bring in some additional patients in that screw up thier lives in association with the witnesses....maybe not. You made my day! Thanks!

How Were You Treated as a Jehovah's Witness if You Had Depression ?
by flipper inmost of us who were in the jehovah's witnesses for some time realize that for years the watchtower society had always discouraged it's rank and file members from going to see therapists, or professional counselors if they had depression, or serious chemical depression.
the watchtower society always told us to go out in service more, do more personal study, be more regular at meetings - and essentially we would lose our depression , and everything would fall right back into place.
the old, " don't worry, be happy " cliche.

I have suffered from depression for decades. After becoming a JW at the age of 19 looking back, I became more depressed with all the burdens of service and meetings, and with all the usual expectations from the JW males that were "taking the lead"-God help us.
Interestingly, a female witness who was a medical doctor diagnosed my depression and treated me with medications at the age of 24. I have been on medications every since, now I am 49. I really did not pay any attention to the dumb asses in the congregation who did not have a clue about depression. Many people I knew including my witness mother-in-law were being treated by janitor male witness with herbs and keniesology-I know that spelling is really wrong-my point is many witnesses were into quackery treatments that in my opinion were of limited value. That was Ok. Seeing a real doctor in thier minds was the wrong thing to do.
There was a curcuit overseer named Tom Bucher that came around our curcuit in the late 80's. He too suffered from depression and was very helpful to many of the friends. He was very understanding. I think this was a hard pill for the local elders to swallow having this curcuit overseer saying from the platform that is was ok to get professional help and take medication, and that depression was a very real illness.

The Chevrolet Vega and the Ford Pinto......I was assimulated in 1976 by the Borg, so I used to say, "I am glad the end did not come in 1975". I pissed away almost 30 years.
