Remember the "root-eaters"? Iridology went thru several cong.s in west central Ohio around early eighties. One sister waited too long to see an oncologist and died. Herbal poltices were supposed to cause malignancies to be expelled from the body. Herbal and coffee enemies were supposed to cause tumors to be cured. Some treatments even suggested tumors would migrate to the colon and be passed that way. A very naive brother spent a lot of money he didn't have travelling to Tennessee to treat his whole family by an iridologist. His son nearly died from diabetic shock. For a while, the cong. got divided between the root-eaters and the non rooters. They were so enamored with their colons. They were stikin' a lot of wierd stuff up rectally. One elderly sister gave my wife and I a pamphlet describing rectal relaxation techniques one of which meant inserting large things. This practitioner actually described an anxiety treatment he performed on a woman's teenage daughter in his office in which he used a broomstick handle, demonstrating how the mother could perform this on her daughter at home! I nearly left the org. over this kind of mentality. Too bad the internet wasn't in operation back then.

Did You Refuse To See A Doctor Or Therapist Because You Were A Witness?
by minimus ini'm curious how many put off seeing a doctor or some other "worldly" professional because you didn't want to bring "reproach upon jehovah's name" or were counseled against it.

the next scare
by OICU8it2 inlet's see, wasn't the last big rush to armageddon around 1991 with the "peace and security" fulfillment approaching rapidly because of all the talk of peace finally happening after the end of the cold war with the demise of the ussr and berlin wall?

The Idiocy of the Universal Sovreignty Issue
by Black Man indoes anyone else have trouble processing the logic behind the wts issue of universal sovreignty?
why empower satan to make claims and give him the time and circumstances to prove his claims?
why have a bet between 2 people decide the fate of the universe?

- It's all about free will, and why we should do things God's way, or just our way. It gets to the core of what life's meaning is all about. Just why does God (assuming you really believe in him!) allow wickedness to exist God gives you instincts and then chastises you for following them. It almost appears he's not involved anymore. Yet he says a sparrow doesn't fall but that he is aware of it. Makes me feel so small.

Lurkers! Stop Blaiming Satan For Your Own Problems!
by metatron inwhere would jehovah's witnesses be if they couldn't blame all their problems on the devil?.
maybe they would be forced to confront --- finally--- their own foolishness!.
case in point: i had a nice chat with sister a. in which i expressed my deepest sympathy for her tired daughter,.

By blaming Satan for every bad thing and "waiting on Jehovah" for every good thing, no good JW ever has to take responsibility for their actions or use their brain to figure out what is the best solution to a problem. That results in a completely wasted life while they wait for a future that never comes.
Nina Yeah, cruzanheart, expectation postponed is weary to the heart.

Watchtower Prophecies and Contradictions
by ClassAvenger inmy jw friend does not believe that the watchtower has made many false prophecies before, he says that all people who say those things are apostates and that they are lying.
well, i know that many of you know magazines where the watchtower prophecises or makes contradictions, can anyone post what magazines they were (year, month, day) and if you can, the page #.
that way i can tell him to check them out himself.

Get the book "Index of Watchtower Errors" by David Reed. It is a compilation of quotes from the borg's last hundred years or so. The neat thing is, the book just presents the quotes and lets them stand by themselve. Quite enlightening. Not sure where I got it. Maybe the Commentary Press website or Reed's website. Anyway, when you read these quotes, it removes blind faith in the wtb&ts.

Can God exist outside of time
by setfreefinally in.
some say god exists outside of time and space therefore he can predict the future.. any comments?

Jesus said it was predetermined he would be betrayed. Then he said something like woe to the man thru whom this gets fulfilled. Perhaps God will see the future in a more general way but the individuals still have a choice. Kinda like the Heisenburg thing. You can know a statistical outcome but not which individual particles will be included. The closer you look at one thing the more blurred its counterpart becomes. I personally don't believe in a "timescape" outlook. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for the post. There are a couple coming to my house once in a while. I've been asking questions about the changes in the society's methods but haven't mentioned the internet. Have been wondering how to get into something more serious but afraid they'll get scared off. They still bring me the mags. which I want since you can't get 'em by subscription anymore. Your post was insightful.
Thanks

LANDMARK DECISION - Vicki Boer vs Watchtower Society
by Uzzah inas most are aware, vicki boer has been long awaiting a decision to be handed down in a case she started against the society in canada.. the decision was handed down today.
as with any 55 page decision, it will take some time for the legal experts to hash it over and decipher what was said.
but, in a nutshell..... vicki won.

When Prophecy Fails - Part 2
by refiners fire inconcluding festingers observations of prophetic disappointment with a flying saucer cult in 1956.
the major period of expectation spanned 4 days, from 17th december when the faithful expected to be airlifted from the back garden to safety by flying saucers thru 21st december when the city and surrounding countryside would be inundated with floodwaters with total devastation the result.
the saucers were predicted to arrive at 4pm on the 17th..nothing happened:

Absolutely fantastic article, Refiners. This would be a good way to talk to witnesses without scaring 'em off. Thanks for the post.
