The events i heard about at Centreparcs involved key parties with the lodge keys. You took a random key and got a random wife. Or was it a randy wife?

US Patriotism VS the Rest of the World
by Xena inabaddon and i were having a discussion in another thread regarding the differences between us patriotism and european patriotism.
apparently some people consider the us to be peopled with rabid flag waving, my country right or wrong, ugly americans.
i am wondering what the general concensus of this board would be?.

OK, I've waded through the whole thread...
Abaddon's Mirrian-Webster definition of patriotism is interesting when compared to Chambers of patriot:
one who truly, though sometimes injudiciously, loves and serves his fatherland
American patriotism is strongly expressed by some but if any of you have spent any time with Greeks you will know they express their patriotism vehemently. They describe Greece as better than all other counties but to each other complain bitterly about much of contemporary Greek culture. American culture has so successfuly colonised the rest of the world, for better or worse, which must contribute to the perception of American patriotlism as intolerably arrogant. Greek patriotism is only seen within Greece, American patriotism is seen everywhere.
It's similar to the enmity that some Scots feel toward the English. Neither is superior but the economic, militaristic (and sporting!) supremacy of England as a nation irks those Scots with an injudicious love of their country.
What does make American patriotism different is their sensitivity towards criticism. Scots generally agree with what others would criticise about us but then maybe we took to heart the words of Burns after all and we do have the gift to see ourselves as others see us.

what should I do...
by davidsf inunbelievable... the guy i studied with called my house tonight after 10 years i left.
fortunately my wife answered and told him i wasn't available so i have time to think about my options.
he left his name and number.

Sounds to me like a pre-memorial visit too. And if he's left his number then the ball's in your court and as it's been 10 years it's highly unlikely they're out to lynch you.
Ignore it and if he calls again play it vague.

Was There Ever A Circuit Overseer That You Couldn't Stand?

The only thing that Alastair gave a toss about was the size of the steaks in Brazil. Some while prior to dying he collapsed at home and it took 5 paramedics to get hime off the floor. He thought it was hilarious. I think we know who ate all the pies!

Number 6 and Searchforthetruth
Big old Alastair died last year and his wife seems to have the onset of Alzheimer's. He took my Pioneer School and can't say I liked him that much, bit of a headmaster.
I know Jim Simpson, John Flack, etc. What about the flash singleton Ian Shanks or loadsamoney Bob Oldrey?

Middle East
by scotsman in.
as so many have pretty strong convictions about irag and the state of the middle east i was wondering if anyone had spent any time there.
i'm not suggesting that this is necessary to have an opinion on the current war.. and cruising down the nile, or day trips from cyprus don't count!

Interesting stuff Teenyuck, and also interesting that
The problems with Iran were still in the national psyche, so Iraq got little attention
A bit like the Irag centered attention at present and our blinkers to other countries.
Anyone else even been to a Middle Eastern country?

Princess Diana.....remember??!!
by ScoobySnax influffy i know.
but tonight i was thinking it must be almost 6 years since diana was killed in that car crash in paris, and i was thinking about the outpouring of grief that happened not just here, but around the world.
i never was one of the ones that went to london on the day of her funeral as at the time i was flying back from a holiday in turkey, but i remember it appearing in newspapers out there and people of different nationalities coming up to me and expressing their condolences, particulary this french bloke hugging me whilst i was sitting around the pool a couple of days after the crash!.

Hey hey hey don't diss Anne so much! She's a busy little Royal and I like the hard callous edge she has just as much as i liked Diana for her glamour (or "it"), Fergie for her common-ness. They're soap opera for the world and I would miss them as much as an episode of Sunset Beach.

Yes, you always get a couple of attention seekers at Perth Convention wearing them, but most commonly they're worn at weddings. Some don't think they're appropriate for the platform and I have never seen one being worn a speaker. I recall some English halls being a bit circumspect of them even being worn for weddings.
But they must be tartan. I have one in dark grey tweed and some Witnesses went bananas just hearing about it.
Why do you ask?

A Child Molestor Wins Best Director....WoW
by teenyuck in.
i recall when roman polanski molested (raped) a 13 year old girl..... now he wins an oscar....something is wrong...

He then went to France and climbed into bed with Nystassia Kinski....all of 16! That is statutory rape.
Are you sure that is rape in France? The age of consent in the UK is 16 and I have a feeling it's the same in most of Europe.
I am not trying to defend Polanski (even though I am a man which seems to imlpy immediate guilt). The Oscars are not a moral institution that has any right to make judgements upon the lives of artists. The profligate lives of many in Hollywood excludes them from taking such a position. If the industry is prepared to distribute The Pianist then the Oscars also have to deem it a potential nominee. If you were to argue that the films of Polanski should be banned in America on the grounds of him evading trial, that may make some sense, but I also seem to recall he wasn't alone that night and there was another well known actor present.
Again, What if he were a JW Elder? Would you say "it happened so long ago; lets purchase his product to show support?"
No, I doubt I would buy something from a Witness who was a paedophile, but a harder question for me would be whether I would by something from a company that employed that Witness. The Pianist is the product of a huge industry, will you boycott future films that have actors or technicians who have worked with Polanski, will you boycott the distributor of The Pianist?
I may as well also add that I find Hollywood and the Oscars repellent.
