How do you define religion? I'd argue that Jesus institution of baptism and communion, which are group activities, suggested he wanted his followers to be part of a community.
one might argue that he is the alternative.. yet he is also much more.. he is also religion's nemesis (enemy) and antithesis (opposite).. this is why the builders of babylon (religion) stumble at the real jesus, and instead teach another - one who supposedly appoints human mediators a.k.a.
the ruling religious clergy class and hierarchy (eg gb/fds/sanhedrin).. (1 peter 2:4-8; 2 corinthians 11:4; 1 timothy 2:5; john 14:6) .
for a fresh perspective on the bible book revelation that unveils or reveals the mystery that is religion versus jesus - jesus: victor over religion

when we awaken from the indoctrinated coma of the watchtower corporation and starts to see all the lies and half truths one naturally wonders: does the governing body really believe all the stuff that they have printed in their publication?
are they so indoctrinated that they too are victims of the falsehood that the watchtower prints?
and now with the grandeous claims that the governing body a lone are the faithful and discreet slave of god doing his will do they really beleive such grandeous bullshit?
I agree with bluesbrother, you can believe something is true and still lie in support of your belief.
he just can't seem to stop himself taunting "these muslims" or "some muslim or other".
among his favourite taunts are:.
"all the world's muslims have fewer nobel prizes than trinity college, cambridge.".
I've read the whole thing, I don't have a copy now but from memory I am confident it is a fair summary.
Of course you were an evangelical Christian for 9 years so you know that 'because God is watching' is not the only 'religious' reason for doing a good thing. And I am sure that you are also too intelligent to claim that there are powerful reasons for those of faith to do bad but not for those of faith to do good.
Again, I really don't understand how this is compelling, I am surprised anyone would want to defend this, particularly since the argument has nothing to do with whether or not there actually is a God.
for me, it took many years.. even when i would read all the changes over the years from the "truth", i still would ignore it and "wait on jehovah" and try to be a positive force in the congregation.. eventually, i just couldn't take it anymore and resigned as an elder, and slowly but surely made my fade.. what about you?
were you out, in a short or longer time?
?.
Gradual over years, it was a series of events leading to it all coming crashing down.

I was summarising. Have you read the God delusion?

No, obviously I'm not claiming non believers can't do good and moral acts, how did you get that from what I wrote?
There are many reasons why people perform moral tasks, one of these is religious faith.

Many of the 'new' atheists try to argue that when faith inspires someone to do something charitable it is in spite of and not because of faith, but when faith inspires someone to do something cruel it is because, not in spite of, faith. Then you even get the cop out that when the non religious do terrible things (I.e Stalin) it's because of 'religious' politics or some such nonsense.
I don't understand why intelligent people find this compelling.

I am not sure how Dawkins has managed to gain such a large following. When someone makes arguments such as that the 'good' things religious people do are due to human nature and not religious beliefs, but the 'bad' things they do are of course because of religion and faith, how they are not seen as intellectually vapid is beyond me.
i've got a job interview next tuesday at a catholic hospital.
i have got more than one college degree as well as years of realitive experiance for this position and i am well qualified.
but the "sister" who called me for the interview wants me to bring my high school dipmola all i have is the legal ged which was enough to get me started on my career many years ago.
I am not a former Catholic but I would just suggest that no matter who is interviewing you, you don't want to come across as angry or critical at your parents, or like you try to shift blame for your mistakes to anyone else. Most people can't understand JW life, and so it will probably leave a bad impression.
If she asks to see your diploma and you don't have it you are going to have to be honest with her about it.
Perhaps say you made some bad choices when you were young but your degrees and experience show how you've changed your priorities. Put a positive spin on it.
Good luck!

how do the anointed know that they have received the heavenly calling?

Sure. When I left the religion I tried to explain to some JWs the GB were dishonest and got the response they must believe or they'd never have bothered, which is a different question altogether.
I think the members of the GB are genuine believers, but this doesn't mean that they're not also dishonest. It's not either/or.
my interpretation of gb (governing body) theology has illuminated a fate for mankind in the near future.
i invite you to read the following extracts and my analysis thereafter- theologists only please.. 1 thessalonians 5:3.

Instead of trying to make the bible's apocalyptic literature like Daniel & Revelation fit a specific time frame, have you tried looking at the genre it was written in and understanding its purpose?
They tend to be written during times of great oppression (tribulation!) for God's people (Antiochus in Daniel, Roman Empire in Revelation) and are designed to comfort those living through such times by explaining that God is sovereign and in control, the Kings of the Earth will come and go, but God will last forever and have victory.
This way, we can understand the books in a way that still makes sense to the original authors.
