Please help me understand

my daughter was not brought up jw.

her husband and his family are jw's.

once married, my daughter began going to studies and has now converted.

Hi, lonelymom, and welcome to the board,

Briefly, Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate any holidays, as they believe they all have pagan origins. I am no longer a witness, so I don't remember all the details of each holiday, suffice it to say this includes Mother's Day, Father's Day, Thanksgiving, etc.

I know it's difficult, but until you learn more about your daughter's new religion, it would be a bad idea to try to disagree with her. Her new religion teaches that anyone who speaks against it is an agent of Satan (that may be hard to believe, but it's the absolute truth). I would recommend that, if you can, you try to spend time with her and your new grandchild that is not wrapped around a holiday. That might make it easier (although, her new religion also discourages her from associating with anyone outside of their faith).

This board may give you some solace, as it is filled with those who have been hurt by this religion, and people who share some of your experiences.

My complete sympathies with your situation.

I don't really know whether he is guilty or innocent, I think he probably engaged in inappropriate conduct, but I don't know if he ever touched the kid or actually molested him. I don't know what the charges specify, but I find it hard to believe he actually engaged in anal or oral sex. My reason is simple, this child and his family were on TV saying how wonderful Michael has been, and how he has helped cure the kid's illness. I just don't think they would have been so effusive in their praise for him if there was anything hinky going on.

I also feel that since the family has filed a number of previous lawsuits, and been paid off, that shows a pattern. If I or my child had been injured before (as the mother claims), then I would have been that much more careful about who they associated with, ESPECIALLY who they spent the night with. The only males my son spends the night with are my brothers, period. I don't care who the person is, big star, philanthropist, whatever, my son is NOT going to spend the night with them. Especially if that male has had charges leveled against him in the past?? Give me a break, I truly believe this family (the mother at least) had something up their sleeve to begin with.

Does that mean Michael is innocent? Not at all. If he touched that kid sexually, he should go to jail. If he gave him liquor, he should go to jail. I just hope we don't judge the man based on his monstrous apprearance and odd personality, but on the facts of the case.

Now that you've changed from the Eva avatar, I think I may appropriate it. That girl is gorgeous! If you watch ANTM, we need to chat about this week's show.

Now, on subject, I guess I do feel at least one obligation. That is not to judge them, and try my best to accept them as they are. If I want to be accepted, and that is vital to me after leaving one of the most judgemental organizations in history, then I am obligated to do the same for those I love.

Just one woman's opinion, although I really like Teejay's response too.

ok so pardon me for the take off on richard scarry--he really is one of my favorite all time children's authors.. but i had to share this field service story with you--it's the gospel truth!

hopefully, you can add some of yours.. while pioneering in upstate ny, my sister and i had frequent occasions to work in service with a married pioneer couple.

yes, they were window washers, but that's not the real story here.. they had a return visit on an elderly gentleman who was kind enough to take the magazines every once in a while.

What? He's not in the truth???!!!!

2 1/2 years ago i met my non-jw boyfriend, and i received a shepherding call from two lovely elders who told me that i was mixing good with evil, and didn't i know the man i loved was going to die at armaggedon?

they left me in tears...not as though i left my boyfriend of course.

i've made sure that things like that don't get to me anymore.

Actually, a while back I ran into a former witness friend at a concert. This guy used to be one of my closest friends, and we did a little bit of dirt together. He used to drink beer in Jr. High, curse, ditch class, etc. Well, he saw me, and turns out he's now a ministerial servant. He told me I needed to "come back" and my problem was, I think too much (I have never, ever understood what the hell that is supposed to mean). He looked at my husband and told him Jehovah "needed" someone like him (my husband comes across as rather quiet and easily led, which is NOTHING like his real personality). When neither of us appeared moved, he looked at my son, and then back at me and said, "But what about your son? Don't you at least want him to live?"

Seriously, I thought I was going to kick his ass right there on the grass. I don't even remember exactly what I said, but it wasn't nice and he walked away.

For the record (not that I should have to say this) I would do anything for my son, walk over hot coals, stand in front of a train, ANYTHING, WTH NO HESITATION! How dare this self righteous hypocritical son of a bit** imply that I was deliberatly condeming my son to death by not following his asinine organization.

Encouraged NOT to have kids

i was just thinking about the publisher stats and the birth rate, that was mentioned.. do you all remember in the 80's at the assemblies everyone was encouraged not to have children, to spend their time pioneering, because at armeggedon and in the time of the "tribulation" that it would be difficult with small kids.... to wait until the new system.. i remember a couple that pioneered and she really wanted kids, so her husband made her a deal that they had to pioneer for 5 more years and if the "end" hadn't come yet, they could have kids.

i think they were reaching 30. i do remember 5 years went by and they had a son, that was probably 15 years ago.

can you imagine the people that followed the advice and now are too old to have kids, but spent plenty of time pioneering?.

Aha, so I'm not crazy! My family insists that I must have taken it wrong, or mis-heard, that the society has never discouraged having kids. Of course, my family also says the society never discouraged witnesses against pursuing a higher education.

As a matter of fact, the very last assembly I ever attended, they were even discouraging getting married, saying you should concentrate on doing God's work. I can't remember the scripture, but it was something about not concerning yourself with the things of the world. So many reasons I had to get the hell out of there!

Completly faded? Not Df'ed or Da'ed just for the one's that faded!

how did you know that you were completly faded?

i finally realized the other day that i was completly out, i think for the first time i really had evidence that i was out.

i was at a witness get together (wife still in so i'm allowed to tag along...) and a witness i didn't know from kentucky or tennessee or somewhere was talking to me and using the "terminalogy" and something i said must have cued him because he said "are you a jehovah's witness?

Well, I've been out for a lot longer than you, over 12 years now (that's so scary). I got a few clues, like when my sister's in laws didn't invite me to my sister's anniversary party. They didn't want to make the other witnesses uncormfortable you see Of course, there were "worldly" relatives there, but they didn't count, as they hadn't turned their back on the "truth".

I've had witnesses who haven't seen me in a long time ask me what congregation I'm in now. I find that funny, because when I tell them none, they almost always say yeah, I heard that you stopped going. Well then why the hell are you asking?? So juvenile!

At my father's funeral an older sister (she's 106 if she's a day) took the liberty of telling me I know I need to do better and come back to the KH. I was so mad (being at my non-witness father's funeral and getting preached to) I actually pushed her away from me. My husband kind of caught her, and gave me this totally shocked look (I'm usually very respectful of the elderly).

There are witnesses that do still speak to me, and treat me reasonably well, but they can't seem to have a conversation that doesn't include "enouraging" me to come back.

Not a chance.
