before i had started studying with the jw's i had tried to read the bible.

it didn't make sense to me.

(in all honesty, i didn't try real hard nor did i put forth alot of time into my readings).

You should learn to think and speak for yourself, it's obvious that your expressions merely parrot what you've read here.

Do you have any idea what you're saying?If you are still a witness, which seems to be the case by your replies, (and if you are, i dont think the elders down at the ol' KH would be too pleased to find you on this site) you have no right to tell anyone not to parrot. The witnesses are the ultimate parrots of the WT. It's dreadfully obvious how robotocised they are, especially when you ask them a question not covered in the most recent WT or Awake magazine. They become confused and don't have an answer. The parrot back exactly what has been drilled into their heads, and the idea of free thought and analysis is completely rejected. So witnesses haven't any basis whatsoever to accuse others of not thinking for themselves. "Take the log out of your own eye" so to speak, before attempting to help others to see.

Jehovah's Witnesses Should Show An Identity Card

i went to the public talk given by the c.o.

and the whole theme was that jw's should wear an identity card so that everyone would know who they were.we should feel happy that by our merely voicing our position as jw's, that everyone knows what we are and who we stand for.

we should be happy to make a stand and sit down for the flag salute, to show we won't worship it.

It is rather evident in their teachings, meetings, and everything else, that witnesses want to be "no part of this world". They've said that in more publications than I can count. I was never a witness, but I did attend a few meetings, and the friendly brothers and sisters made quite an issue of this particular subject by repeatedly showing me how different JW's and their meetings were from other churches that are part of "Christendom".["It's so much more personal don't you think? SO much more caring. We don't preach, we teach. Blah Blah Blah"] The WT seems to define itself a lot by what is doesn't do and doesn't believe as opposed to what it does believe. Many of their teachings focus on why others are wrong, and how the witnesses are different. There is probably a number of reasons for this, one being that the WT simply cannot afford to have it's followers looking at outsiders and other beliefs objectively. They have to be sure to isolate themselves, and make an issue out of it, or witnesses may start to look at views opposing the WT, and realize that the entire world is not under the control of Satan the Devil.

Like the people over at bible.ca say:

"An informed witness is soon to be an ex-witness!!!"

Help for a friend

i am not a witness, and i have never been one, but i have a very close friend who is a witness, and have done a lot of reading about the wt and i am well aware of the many evils of their teachings.

but i am not posting to insult the boys in brooklyn.

my friend that i mentioned earlier is currently a witness, and i am wondering if anybody has any idea how i can help her deal with her situation.

I agree with absoloutely everything you said. Her parents do have a lot of influence on her, which is why I am no longer allowed in her house. When her and I first met, I was interested in the JW's, and that is probably why I was permitted to visit her at all.I'm almost certain her parents thought "Oh, a potential future brother, let's see how it goes". But once I realized the problems the WT was causing though, I (mistakenly) brought it up with my friend and that's when her and I stopped spending time together, except at school. While she claims she doesn't even see a difference I'm fairly sure her "true friends" or her parents had something to do with it. I sort of started rambling didn't I? haha. oh well. Oh, and thanks for the compliment :)

Do you always have to be so negative? There are much more diplomatic ways of presenting your opinions, without offending others. People come to this board to get away from all the years of haveing other people's beliefs shoved down their throat. Lighten up. People aren't going to listen to you if you're an idiot about how you address them.

the repercussions of my argument with my mother on the phone the other week are starting to make themselves felt.

let me be clear: i've been disfellowshipped from the org for two years now.

i'm loving my freedom of thought.. so i was talking to my mom [still in the borg] and started expressing myself on various subjects on which i disagree, or at least see room for philosophical "wiggle room" with the society's viewpoints.

If you really know how controlling nd evil the Watchtower is (how long were you a witness?) then i don't see how you could be talked back into going to the Kingdon Hall. You have no reason to. Also, you no longer have any reason to feel guilty about your thoughts about things that the WT would label as evil. You don't have to answer to the elders anymore, and they aren't going to embarass you in front of all your "brothers and sisters". So you can talk to the guy, and have no fear to tell him what you think of the theocratic organization, as long as you're not obnoxious or don't start preaching. What's the worst that could happen?

phone call from witness

i got a phone call from a jw i met when i moved here 10 months ago.

she always sat by herself in the hall and looked so out of it.

well one meeting i mentioned clients and she asked me what kind of clients and i went on th tell her i worked with mental health.

I agree with you that people should not be biased for foolish reasons, but when it comes to the WT, if you know how the witnesses operate you couldn't possibly deny that she is being controlled and manipualted. That is how JW's function, plain and simple. Also, out of curiosity, and I'm fairly certain your answer to this will be no because this is by no means an acceptable site ofr those who are "in the truth", are you a witness? Or were you a witness at one point?

I think the reason so many people are drawn to believe certain WT teachings that are obviouly ludicous is because their teachings are so very seductive. A group of seemingly extremely happy people with an answer ready for any and every question, who simply want to help you. What could be better? I, as I said in my first post, am not a witness, but i was inches away from starting to attend the meetings at the local kingdom hall. I had gone to a few meetings, read many of the familiar watchtower books like "Reasoning", etc.., WT's and Awakes, and they all continually drilled the same message into my head over and over. I was seriously considering becoming a witness, but ended up going full circle when I started researching the witnesses from an independant viewpoint. It's a good thing I had access to the internet because if I would have started going to the meetings, i wouldn' have had the chance to look into what the JW's were all about, and, well, I think we all know how screwed up my life would probably be at this point, or at least on the road there. You weren't the only one who was fooled. There's a good 6 million still being manipulated and a number of others who have since found their way.

The JW's definately do have some trouble talking about their shunning policys. When I asked my friend about how their supposed to treat family members who are DF'd or DA'd she stammered and tried to reason away how the Bible teaches...... I won't bore you with the details. Of course, I asked her that question before I knew most of what i know now, and it really is stomach-turning. I find it shocking how so many people have been hurt by the Watchtower and yet the average witness is completely blind to what is being done to them.

Thanks for the words of support. About cognitive dissonance, i have read plenty about it, but, as you probably know, witnesses are well trained in how to react to "opposers of the truth" and "worldly people" The problem is they are usually aware of your intentions if you plan to help, and, as everyone knows, our "help" is simply another way for Satan the Devil to lure people to his system of things. I just don't know how to approach her without her defenses going up, and i don't wanna risk our friendship on it if I don't end up actually helping her in the end. Oh, what a dilemma this hideous cult has caused me. Oh by the way, Merry Christmas everyone. I hope I'm not offending anyone on this board who is still a witness. Oh wait, that's impossible, you'd be disfellowshipped for being here. hehe, good cheer to all.

Hello everyone,

I'm new here. I am not a witness, and i have never been one, but I have a very close friend who is a witness, and have done a LOT of reading about the WT and I am well aware of the many evils of their teachings. But I am not posting to insult the boys in Brooklyn. My friend that I mentioned earlier is currently a witness, and I am wondering if anybody has any idea how I can help her deal with her situation. Obviously she doesn't realize the problems, or doesn't want to admit them for fear of being disfellowshipped, yadda yadda yadda, and it wouldn't really be possible for her to leave the Witnesses, because everyone in her family and every one of her "true friends" are witnesses. (Sound familiar) We are both 16 yrs old by the way. I'm just wondering if you guys think I should try to do anything to help her. When i tried to show her the faulty teachings of the WT before, as you might expect, she became upset and defensive. Anyway, not a unique story here obviously, but I'm just wonderin if anyone has some words of wisdom. Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.
