bebu - hello! so good to see you here on my thread. i have missed you, but i have not been around much, only now and then. to respond to you, i almost always qualify my prayers with, "yet not as i will, but thy will be done."
and on another note....i often too feel that God is taking care of me without my specific prayers. so often there should have been negative things in my life because of unfortunate circumstances or my own stupidity, and somehow i have been carried through or protected. sometimes such dire things have happened to me; yet i have been spared a negative outcome.
double edge - i truly appreciate your comments and take them to heart. -

well..... there have been times in my life when i prayed for various things and i did not receive the answers i wanted. at the time it was hard to swallow, but often in hindsight, the things i thought i wanted would not have been for my ultimate good. actually....this issue puzzles me slightly. i often think if Christians really believed what they preach they would all be praying to die -- to be at home with the Lord!

MOUTHY NEEDS YOUR PRAYERS AND/OR SUPPORT
by Mary inour dear mouthy is really having a tough time right now and needs our support and/or prayers.
as some of you may know, she's already lost 3 of her children in death and the other one to the borg.
in the last couple of days, she's had to worry about her 2 year old great-granddaughter being in the hospital with an illness and yesterday, her daughter had a suspicious mole removed from her back and was told there is a lump in her breast which has to be biopsied.

lovesdubs -- i am so sorry for the loss of your sister, my sincere condolences to you.
sad emo -- i tend to take a philosophical outlook. if there is a God, then there is some kind of plan and things happen the way they are supposed to. if not, then of course, everything is random and chaotic.
odrade - my friend, as i mentioned is a non-believer, and she was unaware that i was going to a bible study group, much less praying for her. as a non-jw i do not believe in trying to impose my views on others. -

thanks all for your answers.
i really don't think i was trying to promote any particular agenda, just presenting some facts and wondering what you all thought about them. i suppose i knew i would get mixed answers before i even posted.
i do think it is food for thought.
i have been attending a bible study group ("where two or three are gathered.....", etc.)to build my own knowledge, to have the association of very wonderful people (non-judgemental, loving, accepting), to see if i could get some answers.
the idea of taking prayer requests in the way described was alien as a jw, and i have participated largely as an observer. since attending this non-denominational group i have seen that many specific prayers have been answered, but it was with some hesitation that i presented my prayer request to the group.
there is a lot that none of us can know. when i left jws many years ago i put everything on the shelf and turned away from God. now in my life, many things are still on the shelf and questions are still there (i find myself disagreeing with some things in every denomination - including the athiest one!). now the difference is that i find myself turning toward God.
best wishes, nowisee -

hah!
i think you misunderstood me. i am not from texas but from the northeast.
went to austin on vacation which we enjoyed.
we also went to memphis, tn. which was interesting. we saw graceland. after seeing elvis in concert in 1975 and deeming it to be probably the most exciting concert i have ever attended, (and i was not a fan in particular), we thought we should make the trek.
the most interesting thing in memphis was the civil rights museum. you approach a tall brick wall, turn a corner, and there was the site where mlk was shot. just stunning and overwhelming, as i remember all of the news pictures firsthand.
but ky, on our way home was certainly the most beautiful part of our trip and far too short. -

historically, the watch-.
tower society paints a dark often-negative perspective of religion and the churches.. true, they are responsible for wars, corruption and politicking, some individuals may.

i think it is helpful for most people to have some belief system. i think it is important also not to try to impose one's beliefs on others. persuasion and conversation, dialogue is fine and helps the thought process.
everything, it seems to me, in the end boils down to personal conscience.
