Delurk
by Euphemism inwell, this isn't quite a delurk, since i've made several posts already.
but i figured it was worth introducing myself anyway.. i'm 21 years old, and was raised a dub.
had very loyal and active dub parents... there was just no question growing up that i was going to pioneer, reach out for privileges, etc.

I wonder which posters here were the ones...
by berylblue in...always selected for those nauseating parts in the service meeting.
you know, the theocratic family's encouraging service experiences?
the theocratic family's example of a well-conducted family study?

LOL Guilty, beryl!
Personally, I didn't like it, because I knew we weren't a model. It's true, we were a very active dub family, and it wasn't just a surface thing. I can honestly say that everyone in my family was very spiritually minded. But things were never as perfect as they were made out to be on stage. And I felt that pretending to be perfect just made the friends resent us more.

The high mayor of a French town hates JW's
by Mulan inmy brother visited us today, and told us an interesting experience he had last week in france.
he was in the netherlands on business, and they went to france for a few days to visit friends of one of his business contacts, who was the high mayor of a french town, i cannot pronounce, or remember.
one evening this man began to rant and rave about the jehovah's witnesses in his town and how much he hates them.

Whatever happened to freedom of religion, folks?
By all means, let the dubs play by the same rules as every other religion. Force the elders to report child molesters. Don't let children die because of lack of blood.
But if other religions don't pay taxes, the dubs shouldn't either. If other religions have legal rights, the dubs should have them too. It's simple justice.
Plus, personally, I don't want the government decided which religions are valid. That's a scary thought.

Furuli's New Books--Attempt to Refute COJonsson
by ros ini just heard that the norwegian watchtower apologist, rolf furuli, who esteems himself a biblical scholar of semetic languages, has completed the first of two volumes he plans to publish on the societys chronology, assyrian, babylonian, egyptian and persian chronology compared with the chronology of the bible.. title of this first volume is: persian chronology and the length of the babylonian exile of the jews.. i hear that although carl olof jonsson is not mentioned by name, or reference made to his book "gentile times reconsidered," it is nevertheless apparent that these volumes are an attempt to refute jonssons excellent study which has exposed the watchtowers 1914 date as total folly.. .
the book can be ordered now from furulis new personal website:.

I made a mistake above... Furuli's Bible Translation book wasn't removed from Elihu. I'm not sure how I got that impression. Sorry!

Childhood Sexuality
by JH innow be honest, at what age does a person start to masturbate?
read the link and you will be surprised.
answer that question in your mind first and after, read this link below.. .

Sorry for my sloppy definitions, Kaethra. Let me clarify.
What I'm suggesting is that a small child, when masturbating, does not have thoughts about sexual intercourse or about other individuals as sexual objects. At least, I know I didn't

Says the WTS' Youth book, and I suppose possibly other fundamentalist authors. I believe that seedy was being facetious. :)
BTW, JH, I applaud your decision to change the thread title to a less... ahem... probing one. However, I wonder whether 'sexuality' is really an apt description of such early masturbation. While the child may obtain pleasure from touching their genitals, I don't believe that they would connect this with any thoughts or feelings that we would consider 'sexual'.

(I've never heard it refferred as such except by "scholar")
That's a good point, logan. As far as I could tell, the only really original part of Jonsson's book (at least in the chronological sections) was his theory that the question of accession-year dating should be separated from the issue of Nissan/Tishri dating. His task was essentially assembling the scholarship on the subject, rather then doing new research.
I'm not saying this to minimize Jonsson's accomplishment, by any means... taking a large field of research and condensing it into a succint analysis, as he does, is an extraordinarily difficult task. My point is just that due to the nature of his work, his lack of formal academic credentials is simply not relevant.

To AlanF and others! What legal means can be used to stop JC's?
by cyberguy into allan f. and others, what legal means did you use to stop judicial committees from dfng you?
since i was baptized as a teenager, can i use this to my advantage, since i was not of "legal" age to enter into a contract with the watchtower society (i was baptized in 1973)?
also, in my 30s i was appointed an "elder.

I'm not in the hot seat yet, but if it should come to it, I have thought about using the depression line. There would be some honesty to it... dealing with this whole situation has certainly been an emotional strain!
One thought I had, however, was that if a lot of us start doing that, it might make life more difficult for loyal dubs who suffer from depression... it might cause them to be viewed with suspicion.
I'm not saying that automatically rules out the option... I guess I was just wondering if I'm the only one who was concerned about that.

I'm seeing a greater distance grow between Stafford and other WT apologists
Is it even fair to characterize Stafford as a WTS apologist anymore? Based on Three Dissertations, it seems that he's abandoned 1914, the blood doctrine, shunning, and the F&DS doctrine. While his role in the Hughes trial was technically that of a neutral expert, he was called by the father. (I don't mean to imply that his testimony would not have been neutral. What I'm saying, however, is that I doubt that the father would have called him if his views were still those of an apologist.)
I think that Furuli's book disappeared off the Elihu website pretty shortly after the publication of Three Dissertations. The authors of a pending publication, called Your Word is Truth: Essays in Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the New World Translation, also bolted at the same time. And the link to Stafford's WT-apologetic book, Jehovah's Witnesses Defended, was taken off the jehovah.to website. The shunning was swift and complete.
Anyway, I'm certainly not going to waste money on Furuli's book. I crossed swords with him once on an academic list over the meaning of parousia, and his argumentation bordered on incoherent. Perhaps the problem is just his English skills; but personally, I think that his prominence in the WT-apologetic community is proof of how desperate they are for anyone with any kind of academic credentials.
I do look forward to reading Jonsson's rebuttal, however.
