If they pulled a Worldwide Church of God style turnaround, I might--just might--consider it.

Grading of Disfellowshipping Offenses
by RAYZORBLADE injust putting this out to you.. have you encountered, or noticed on occasion how what you were disfellowshipped for, also dictates who will associate with you, post-jw?
yes, i'm talking about those beloved ex-jws/df'd/da'd/apostates.. by that, i mean, if you were, let's say, disfellowshipped for scriptural/doctrinal issues, perhaps in the ex-jw world, you hold yourself or others of that ilk, in higher esteem?.
those that were disfellowshipped for smoking, heavy drinking or drug use, perhaps as previously not strong people.. those that were disfellowshipped for sexual misconduct: (file under: other) and similar to the above.. it's interesting.

Even more interesting is the idea that Paul may have been alone in his idea to disfellowship; his letter was a general one to the congregation, not to any "body of elders"; if it was internal policy already, why did Paul bring it up to the general congregation?
I think it has to do with Paul's position as the advocate of Gentile Christianity. After all, anyone among the Jews who did the things that Paul listed would undoubtedly be shunned by the Jewish community, including the Jewish Christians. The Gentiles had no such tradition, however, and that's why Paul was advocating a change.
Returning to the main subject of the thread... I was just talking about this with Piph, and had a thought.
All of us are here because we no longer believe in the WTS. Otherwise, we would dimiss this site as a bunch of apostate lies. Plenty of people who were d/fed for immorality are still loyal to the WTS.
So it doesn't really matter whether we abandoned--or simply failed to keep--the WT's moral restrictions before we learned the full truth about the org. All of us are here because, at some point, we decided to stand up to the WT and become mentally free.

Gross sins are sins the elders cannot overlook. They are required to look into it judicially. These are sins that would have lead to a death sentence in the nation of Israel.
You know, that was one of the things that bothered me, even when I was a witness.
Adultery, homosexuality, blasphemy, idolatry... yes, those were capital offenses in the nation of Israel. But fornication and theft were not. Drunkenness wasn't even a crime at all! But in the Society, those were all equal, all d/fing offenses. In a certain sense, it was less merciful than the Mosaic law... because any serious offense carried a spiritual death sentence!

The PO in my old congregation was a bethel elder; occasionally, when he would get sent out to other states as a speaker, they would have a special meeting out in a park.

Piph and I were only able to spend a couple of hours at the party, unfortunately, but we had an absolutely wonderful time. Apostates are just the coolest people.
To everyone whom we didn't get to meet, or only got to greet briefly, we hope to see you again soon. That was an experience that must be repeated!

Hey, I had Illingworth too! Gotta agree, he was an intelligent man, and a good speaker. Very socially conservative, but--judging from his talks, at least--far more open-minded and compassionate than your average DO.
No, really -- I believe it. I've met nice CO's, but I've never met a "nice" DO.
Same here. Probably because the CO's at least have to deal with ordinary, R&F dubs. The DOs mostly just deal with elders. They live in a very isolated world.
Did anyone have Steve Konjevich? Personally, I thought of him as Steve Sonofabitch. He could be humorous, even friendly, on a social level... but in his official capacity, he was one of the most anal-retentive brothers I've met.
DO before him was Paul Moskie. From what I remember, his talks were unremarkable but not terrible. My only direct interaction with him was a walk-through for an interview on the CA. He was obsessed with the first interviewee flipping the microphone cord out of the way, so that the others wouldn't trip on it. The problem is, the cord was already out of the way, so when I flipped it, it didn't move! So he kept making me flip it again and again. Finally, I dragged it forward, so that I could flip it out of the way, and he was finally happy.

Hey, I resemble that remark!
Nah, seriously, the quality of the average public talk is abysmal, of course. The worst, when I was in NY, were the young bethelites. Most of them were glib, knew the org lines pat... and had no content or substance whatsoever. Every one of them sounded exactly the same. True borgism.

So does that mean that the Klingons over at JWZone are actually hidden apostates?

A person cannot be used as a fill-in for public talks if they are not approved to give scheduled public talks.
And to answer your question above... yes, to give a public talk anywhere, a brother must be a ministerial servant. (He must also have specific authorization from his elder body as a public speaker.)

I can respect that, mizpah.
For myself, when I was a witness, I always appreciated examples of this sort of action by the Watchtower, because I saw it as evidence of a softening; and I could use it in arguments with other witnesses to show that we could have normal legal or business dealings with worldly institutions.
I suspect that you were a witness at an earlier time than I; a more conservative time, and a time when far more emphasis was put on separateness from Babylon the Great. Perhaps if I had grown up in a more conservative time, or a more conservative congregation, I might feel similarily.
Personally, however, I do think I've shown clearly above how what the WT did wasn't wrong even by the rules it applied to its members. Say that some industrial accident damaged various pieces of local property, including a witness' house and church. Would the WTS say that the Witness couldn't band together with his neighbors--including the church--to sue the factory that caused the accident? I don't think so. And yet, being co-plaintiffs on a lawsuit actually involves more co-operation and association than merely filing an amicus curiae brief.
