Part of the "beware apostates in our midst" campaign? It does confuse me, too--I can't figure out why it is worth the time to find people just to say, you didn't quit, we threw you out--except we threw you out because you turned your back on us! Very confusing.

Elders searching for long disassociated ones
by Gretchen956 ini have heard of a couple cases in the last year where this happened, and i wonder if its happened to anyone else.. one of my acquaintances from another list moved from portland back to his homestate of maine.
he moved to a small town near the town where he was associated, but had not been associated for over 12 years.
the elders tracked him down after all that time and said they wanted to have a committee meeting so that they could disfellowship him.

"Foreward" to "Captives of a Concept"
by Cameron inforeword
according to the annual report for the year 2003 in the january 1, 2004 watchtower, 6.5 million jehovah?s witnesses spent about 1.2 billion hours distributing hundreds of millions of pieces of literature while going door-to-door and conducting 5.7 million bible studies in 235 lands.
all that activity resulted in 16 million people attending their annual "memorial of christ?s death.

Is this a recent publication? I can't find anything on it--but I'm not a great searcher.

Dropped two bombs on jw mom....
by imallgrowedup inmy jw mom sent me the same press release that was circulating on the board last week regarding a radical group who was trying to get religion and national borders abolished through the un.
(see http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/14/65705/1.ashx if you didn't see the press release).
anyway, there was no commentary from her in the e-mail, which says to me that this is a "silent warning" to become a dub before i die in armageddon.

Glad to see from the picture that I'm not the lady across the street from you. This weekend, honest. Even if it is 2 degrees.

The Watchtower Attendance Crisis
by metatron inif the average congregation has about 83 publishers in the us, then the organization may be sinking into a crisis.. take that 83 and consider that half the congregations may have less.. take away '15 minute publishers' who don't attend.
take away completely fake publishers who rarely attend.
take away increasingly tired publishers who 'feel sick', are depressed, or just want to stay at home and watch tv.. .

I wonder what effect the rising hispanic influence will have. The culture is so different from the emotionally frigid, pleasure-denying, isolationist Watchtower, that I can't imagine they will either turn to a more spiritually satisfying religion if they can't change this one. Anybody have any experience with hispanic congregations? Are they indeed copies of white congregations? My friend attends a hall in an inner-city predominantly African-American neighborhood and I suspect that is one of the reasons his experience has been less damaging than those in white congregations. (I recognize I am talking completely through my hat and am looking for info from people who have actual, you know, knowledge and experience!)

charitable work
by kgfreeperson ini was surprised to find that my jw friend had been on the board of directors of a charitable organization for a number of years because i've read here that any charitable activities are actively discouraged on the basis of either any time spent at any such activities would better be spent in "the preaching work" and that any attempt to solve problem sin "this system" is a waste of time and resources since jehovah will fix everything permanently in his own time.
can anyone point me to writings of wts saying that?

I think he has swum against the tide more than once, but he remains a committed and loyal JW. I, who have no training in the "holding contradictory ideas simultaneously and denying the contradiction" necessary to be both sane and a JW, get baffled and frustrated. But "balanced" is a word he uses often but I think he uses it as you or I would rather than as a code word for "avoid." I am often amazed how he has been able to "cherry pick" WT writings and teachings so that he really has gotten a set of principles for living that are pretty decent. But my poor mind that requires coherence and congruence just has a terrible time with this stuff!

So my impression is incorrect? charitable work isn't actively discouraged, it is just that it isn't encouraged?

Well, rats, I know people have posted links to kingdom melodies, but I don't know how to use the search function. Can someone supply a link? I know this, hilarious as it is, is even funnier if you know what it is parodying!
