Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to have an affair with a "worldly" person?
I mean, how in the world could you be discreet and in the same congregation?

Your letter is brilliant, Elsewhere. I do see why they didn't understand the letter from the borg to mean that it was up to them whether or not they shunned you, though.

I am fascinated by the man's picture on the front of the brochure. Since I'm getting the impression that their new target audience is uneducated, low-income, people of color, why do they feature an old frightened looking white guy? Are new immigrants supposed to think "hey, if that old white guy is scared, maybe I ought to be scared, too?" I mean, really?

Going out with a bang
by LittleToe inafter much deliberation, i decided to go "out" at the end of a public talk.
it didn't go down too well, but at least i was able to give some of my reasons for leaving.. i've put some of the details on my homepage.
i'll update it more when i get the time and the strength.

Little Toe, I just listened to your talk while reading the transcript. It is hard to imagine how anyone could have listened to you and not have followed you out of the congregation.

The only JW I know well personally goes to all the meetings, goes out "in service", owns his own home, advises all young JWs who will listen to get as much education as they can and to buy, rather than rent, their homes. He's also working himself to death (okay, I'm being melodramatic) to "build up his reserves." I don't know how he reconciles it all, but I guess I don't need to. I think he figured out early on that he didn't like living on the hairy edge of poverty and, while he's willing to work very hard and is exceedingly conscientious, he recognizes that no one will look after his interests but him. I think there must have been some crisis at some point, but he's waiting on Jehovah to fix the organization (although he'll never criticize it) and trying to walk the path he thinks Jehovah has planned for him. Drives me crazy because of all the inconsistencies, but it seems to work for him, so hey . . . .

Another JW Questions 1914 At The Meeting!!!
by minimus inmy mother told me that a regular pioneer in his 60's from a nearby hall questioned how we could be sure 1914 was the date christ was enthroned as king of the kingdom.
he questioned the brother conducting the meeting for field service.
it didn't go well......he left that hall and is reported missing in action!

I'm trying to imagine the conversations that lead to these articles presaging new light. Is it all hints and raised eyebrows and nobody actually says anything, or does somebody say, okay, guys, its time to figure out how, over the next five years, we're going to get ourselves out of this impossible corner we're in. But I think they probably do sincerely believe, but how the heck do they maintain their belief even as they are "tacking" to deal with obvious mistakes?

It is pretty discouraging, though, isn't it. We look at articles and television shows and say--hey people now will understand just what this cult is all about and will stay away in droves. But what this article points out is that we see evidence everywhere because we're looking for it. But the Watchtower keeps marching on.
