For those of you who do not believe in capital punishment...
by SixofNine inthat is, for those of you who actually think that executing children is wrong, what types of discipline do you find more effective?
i'm not a parent but when dealing with kids, i've seen that solitary confinements tend to make kids feel isolated and can really hurt them.
if they're near others and are checked up on frequently, it seems ok. but when they're completely ignored, that is just bad.

I don't have any children, however; in my role as a school crossing guard I have been forced to deal with the little ones. I am not allowed to touch any of the them, and I cannot use duct tape or a taser either. I have found that a calm voice and showing approval or dissaproval towards their actions seems to work well. We like to receive praise and we feel bad when we realize that we have let someone down.

Where does free will end?
by jgnat inour rights, our justice system, and democracy depends on the concept that we have free will.
this extends all the way to those of us who spurn convention to live an off-beat life.
our constitution (us), charter of rights (canada), do not enshrine convention, they enshrine freedom.

Hi nat! Some sound observations from a very intelligent woman. I think that I am more drawn to that. At times, I still feel sheepish that I allowed myself to be "conned" into the WTS belief system. I can rationalize why I allowed myself to forfeit my free will in this situation; there are other instances in my colorful life where I have done the same. I have finally reached a point in my life where I can say that I have reconciled many of my self doubts and have focused on who I really am so that I can make decisions based on what I believe in myself. This may sound selfish, having a spouse and friends who love me and care about me. However, the responsibility of expressing my free will has given my a personal freedom that I have spent an entire live tying to achieve. This responsibility is not burdensome; but it does emphasize that we are each responsible for our own actions. I agree that as a society, it is dangerous to try to protect individuals from questionable decisions made by their own free will. I chose to join the WTS. I chose to leave the WTS. Each day of my life is precious time that I can spend expressing the happiness I have in my live and sharing that happiness with my spouse, friends and those who I come in contact with each day. I am sure that I will missteps in my life, but they will not be the result of trying to be what others may want me to be. It will be the result of my own missteps. I appreciate your thoughts on this matter as well as the thoughts shared by others on this discussion board.

by minimus ini called the police and they brought the fire department and police to retrieve the post office package.
i found out that in the last month at least 2 other businesses got this type of package.
the white powder was in a plastic that was placed inside a pack of orbit gum.. the contents were taken and were then brought to the town postmaster.. wish me luck!.

In these post 9/11 days, it is hard to determine whether these are harmless pranks or legitimate threats. I would think that with all of the Homeland Security monies out there, that a tleast these incidents would be reported so that there is documentation if these are legitamate threats. Am glad that you are okay. There are alot of kooks out there, just sayin.

iconoclast - breaking away from the tribe
by jgnat ini've recently finished the book, "iconoclast - a neuroscientist reveals how to think differently" by gregory berns.
he sure makes a person feel better for being a rebel.
the book moves quickly and is an entertaining journey through the mind an how it works.

iconoclast. Feels like something I have been my whole life. The mandatory training at my job is always trying to categorize me and put me
into a certain mold. It didn't work at the Kingdom Hall either. There is alway room for the voice of indepedent thought.

Did You Aspire To Be An Elder Or Did You Want A Relative or Friend To Be One?
by minimus inif you were a male growing up in the congregation, it was expected that you would "reach out" for a position in the hall.
some of us did just that and others didn't want any "privileges"!.
i knew some people, especially "sisters", that really wanted their relative or good friend to be appointed so they might "change things".

I wanted to be in charge. Being godlike in the congregation was an enticing thought. I could control people's lives. Then, I found out how it really works.
