I had some of the same initial reservations you had. I lurked for quite a while before posting and I believe it took a day or two to actually post after joining the site. I am still active, and like you none of my family are JWs. All of my husband's immediate family are JWs. I have not yet expressed my doubts to him.

we have had a variety of theist vs atheist debates on this forum.
usually, it devolves (or evolves?
) into a debate on what can or cannot be proven.. so let's step back a second.

i still find it strange that believers cannot get it in to their heads that atheism is not a belief, but theism is.
there cannot possibly be proof "for" the atheistic position as it is simply a position that says i see no proof for a god.. if someone says there are pink unicorns with purple spots and i say i have never seen any proof of their existence, i cannot offer proof of my "position", the onus is 100% upon the spotted unicorn guy to prove their existence to me.
simple.. where the frustration enters in for us non-unicornists is when the unicornists expect us to listen to inane arguments , non facts and plain nonsesnse and then go along with their delusion.

yes, i too have wondered how an assembly that is held in a fully paid for assembly hall, with no food service, could possibly have $10,000 in expenses.
i suppose the bethel speakers have transportation expenses - maybe $1000 or so.
as for rent on the assembly hall, well you have already paid for it once, why pay again?
