I know a lot of people, but don't have any close friends and no "old friends". The hall I grew up in discouraged getting close to anyone and of course friends from school were out of the question. To this day, I can't get close to anyone. My three sisters are the same way. We have each other and that is all. But, now I live 400 miles from the rest of my family. So, I spend my time with my husband... and he has friends that go back 35-40 years.

i was thinking today that many of us lack something that other people enjoy -- old friends.
we either weren't close to our high school friends, or sort of shut them out of our lives.

Do JW's really care if the literature they leave ends up in the garbage can
by JH injust like junk mail, i'm sure that jw literature, tracts or magazines ends up in the garbage can just as fast as any junk mail.
most witnesses must know this, but still they look at how many hours and placements they will add to their report.
what people do with the literature, most jw's know.. i recieved my tract yesterday, and it went in the garbage can in no time.. in a way, they create polution, knowing that most of their literature will end up in the trash..

My husband told me this and I laughed like heck. When he was a young boy, a couple of JWs knocked on the door. His father answered, told them he wasn't interested and told them not to leave any magazines in the hallway. Well, they did. Before the two could get back to their car which was parked in the driveway, his father grabbed the magazine, ran out in the yard and set it on fire.He said the carload of JWs watched in horror, then sped off.

Did you go to your prom?

I never attended any dances, games or anything until I was a senior. I wanted to attend the prom because it was a combination prom/senior dinner and the class valdictorian was going to be announced then. However, I needed permission from the PO because it was on a meeting night and he said absolutely no. So, I didn't go. But I found out later that he gave the OK to others so they could skip the meeting and go to the prom. I also found out I was named valdictorian.

Can you function w/o your cell phone?
by unbeliever ini went without my cell phone for a couple of days because i left it at my brothers house.
he lives in another state and i had to wait for it to be overnighted to me.
i could not believe how crazy i went without it.

Here in the Adirondacks we don't have them...they won't work up here. When my sister came for a visit, I told her she may as well shut off her phone since it wouldn't work and she was amazed that no one up here has one.

Five minute mention in a funeral talk?????
At my dad's memorial service, they never talked about him AT ALL... didn't even say his name... just went right into the lecture... or, as my husband says, their recruiting speech.....

JW attitude toward death
by love2Bworldly ini was just remembering how when i lost my non-jw brother when i was a teenager, that my witness friends were not very supportive when he died.
he died in his sleep at age 22, and he was a very nice person.
i remember crying at school and my jw friends were like, oh brother it's already been a week!

My dad and I both were battling cancer last year...he didn't make it. At his memorial service, the JW never mentioned dad's name, never gave his condolences to the rest of us, and since then have never even called on my mother to see how she's been doing (she has mobility problems and "attends" meetings through phone hookup). It's as if the whole thing never happened. We are all having a hard time dealing with it.

How old did you expect to be when the New System would come?
by JH ini became a jw at age 28 and no way did i expect to ever get older than 40 years old in this system.. maybe at the extreme, i could have imagined being 45 years old, not more..

Several years ago I was sitting in mom's kitchen and she mentioned my upcoming birthday and made a comment about my being middle-aged. I looked at her and said "I was never supposed to be this old". She just sighed and said, "I know what you mean". I was 22 in 1975.... I thought I'd be living my adult live in perfection. Instead, I've had two bouts of cancer since 2005... my dad and I were battling cancer at the same time and he didn't make it. I've been having a real difficult time coming to grips with his passing...

My stepson just came home from the army. The other day he and his dad were getting ready to go out to do errands. Nick was wearing camo pants; his father was wearing a camo jacket. I laughed and said that they could go to a Halloween party disguised as an upper and lower GI!

The time an idiot brother sent me (I was about 12 at the time) and another young sister (she was in her teens) into a rooming house full of men. We knocked on a few doors and then left because we were scared. He asked us if went to every door and we said yes.

Which did you fear more as a JW, God or the Elders?
by JH ini felt that god understood if i missed meetings or didn't go out in the field service very much, but the elders wouldn't.. bottom line, i feared the elders more ...... that's pretty sad.

It was the elders I feared more than anything. When I was 6 years old and couldn't sit still through a Friday night meeting, the PO came up to me after it was over and told me I was going to die at Armageddon if I couldn't sit still through the meetings. I was terrified of him after that. I thought he had the power of life and death over me. We also had a study conductor that would sit me down after each bookstudy to make sure I knew what the lesson was all about. I remember him being upset with me because I couldn't explain the king of the north and the king of the south to him....I was only 7 years old and had no idea what a world power was....(this was late 1950s-early 60s). I never realized how much I still have a fear of them because the other day a man knocked on my door. When I looked through the window and saw him standing there with his briefcase, I broke out into a sweat and wasn't going to answer; but I finally yanked the door open... and found out he was selling insurance.
