Why I think the Borg will have another enemy soon.

there is that old story i'm reminded of sometimes about the world being full of three types of people.

the people who make things happen, the people who watch things happen, and the people who have no idea of what is going on.

i thought you might want to at least be in the second catagory so i wanted to share something i found interesting with you.. i have two short poems and a short story for you to read below, and if you care to read these you might find something quite remarkable about them.. long years have passed.

I am curious as to whether, no matter how 'clever' they might be, whether computers in my lifetime will ever be genuinely creative.

Look at LotR by Tolkien. That would be a pretty cute set of algorithms.

And also, with evolutionary algorithms, the success is rated by results. With bridges that's easy. But how do you rate a story subjectively?

One thing I am fascinated by; the first application by a computer to be declared a person.

If computing power and programming does make computers intelligent, to what degree? Will a computer ever be capable of developing a desire for self-determination? Maybe, even if they are programmed to be ahppy little slaves, they will be so bright they decide they don't want to... er... live that way?

The Improbability of God

God is just a habit.

Started off a long time ago; basically, humans anthropomorphized (or otherwise explained in easily understandable terms, i.e., instead of Thor (thunderman), an appropriate animal could be used) the unknown. Lightening was made by a big man, or whatever.

Then those who were best at making up the stories about why things happened found out that they had a social advantage. Over time it was found that entire societies could be based around what one person said was true.

It was all downhill from there...

But, proof is a merciless master. And not one religion has ever been proved to be true, or provided a grain of evidence as to their claims regarding invisable skypeople or life after death.

They are very good at coming up with reasons WHY they can't prove it. This is a survival trait, and not an indication of rightness. Any religion that couldn't justity lack of proof would cease to exist very early on. Whoever came up with the concept ineffable died a rich and powerful person, even though they should have been pulled apart by wild horses.

Now, their reasons why they can't prove what logically should be provable may make sense to them. But they don't to me. They just sound like excuses by people too frightened, lazy, conditioned or with too much invested into a belief to give it up.

Sorry to be so blunt towards believers; you can believe what you like, but after a few of the things I've read today, I can't be arsed with being all politically correct.

most of us now laugh at the witnesses, but i think compared to some others they are quite reasonable ( notice i said compared).. so which religion has the most crazy beliefs.. i dont have much knowledge of these religions but i'll mention what i know , feel free to add your own points or correct me if i'm wrong.. i'll start with.. mormons,.

believe jews migrated to america.and that we are angels on earth being tested.. monnies,.

believe rev moon is jesus on earth.they also use (missuse) quatum physics to prove their beliefs.. scientology,.

As Thirdson has pointed out, old David boy has been providing humourous interludes to the British media and public for well over a decade now. He is a one-man nut house.

As for subliminals, isn't it amazing how people obsessive enough to look and find these images cannot be bothered to do some research at the pattern-finding, and especially face-finding abilities of the human brain.

Even if there isn't a face, uur brains will find it.

Frankly, from my point-of-view, the apostate elders are the good guys...

And I have also not seen identifiable personal information posted by any aopstate elder; the material they publish is normally organisational material and letters to Bodies of Elders on general issues.

But why would you want to go to the body of elders? I think you'd get better advice here!

The United States Knew about 9-11 in advance?

delmart vreeland, a 35-year-old american is in canadian custody for credit card fraud charges.

here's the kicker, he claims to be a lieutenant in a u.s. navy intelligence unit, basically a spy who knew in advance about 9-11.. in his affidavit, he says he tried to warn canadian intelligence about possible terrorist attacks on new york and the pentagon, along with targets in ottawa and toronto, but was written off as a petty criminal.

so he wrote the warning on a piece of paper, sealed it in an envelope, and handed it to jail guards a month before the attacks.

I find it hard at the moment to believe even anyone as low on the evolutionary ladder as a politician could have let this go ahead.

But I can think of plenty of reasons why they would, as outlined by other posters.

I mean, look; no body dare say shit about new restrictions on liberties bought in to help in the 'war on terrorism', millitary spending can go through the roof, thanking the millitary industrial combine for their support, the US can act like they like Internationally with only the sound of foreheads smacking pavement at home, a re-election is a shoo-in, and Bush jokes are out of fashion.

Of course, it is all circumstancial and rather far-fetched.

Personally, if it is true, and it was pre-meditated negligence, I hope those concerned are executed; what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

the u.s. government is returning john walker to the states for trial.

what do you consider an appropriate punishment for his mis-deeds?.

i think, he should be[if found guilty]stipped of his citizenship and returned to somewhere in the mideast to spend the rest of his life,with no possibility to return to the u.s. for any reason.

And let's not even bother to pretend to have a fair trial; he's been tried and convicted in the court of public opinion already, that's good enough.

I find it quite funny when x-cultists ignore the fact that other people might be religously indoctrinated too.

Seriously, if the guy is guilty, then let him go to jail for as long as his crimes warrant. But a fair trial is paramount, otherwise we do as they do.

Toilet Seat Up Or Down??????

we have no problems in our relationship about the toilet seat.

but others seem to make a big deal as to whether the guy should leave it down for us ladies.. what's your take on this?

take into account ladies that if a man puts it down, and we leave it down, he has to always be putting it up.

Unless I'm in a hurry, or headed out the door in outdoor clothes, I always sit, no matter what I am doing.

This allows a minutes contemplation of the infinate, and pursual of whatever books or magazines I have 'on the go' in the loo.

One thing I have noticed is girls pee like mares (three secinds, all done), guys trickle longer... due to a longer urethra perhaps? I thought it was only me, but in a discussion of 'wierd stuff about girls' that I had with some male friends (yeah girls, we talk about you as well; the sport is a cover, the minute you're out the room we talk about your skanky underwear and cellulite), it came out that this was a common thing.

Sickle cell trait, lactose intolerance, and alcohol sensitivity are all classic signs of selection.

Sickle cell occurs in ares where there is Malaria. People with sickle cell trait have resistance to Malaria. This is so favourable it outweighs the mortality caused when someone actually suffers from sickle cell anemia due to getting the gene from bith parents. Despite the mortaility some suffer, those with the trait are more fecund, thus the gene is common in areas with Malaria.

Dietary patterns in the West mean that anyone having lactose intolerance would fail to thrive. Those with lactose tolerance would be fecund. Thus the genes for tolerance are more common (it looks like most Westerners should call themselves lactose tolerant, as this was probably the original form, Oriental people being 'nrmal' with respect to their intolerance of lactose after weaning).

now with portugal lifting virtually all anti-drugs legislation, belgium joining the dutch in decriminalising cannabis, and britain reducing it from a class b to a class c drug (making it on a par with abusing perscription drugs), the only question is when will the usa give up it wasteful and pointless 'war on drugs'?

get with the program uncle sam, don't be part of the problem which leads to massive criminal activity devoted to supplying substances whose use is a victimless crime!.

LONDON (Reuters) - Female members of Britain's biggest trade union have added their voices to calls for the legalization of cannabis, but they have an unusual argument -- the drug offers women a calorie-free way to relax.
Women members of Unison's eastern region say the decriminalization of cannabis is a ``women's issue'' because it presents a healthier and less fattening way to chill out.
``Cannabis can be used for women to relax and de-stress without calories, in contrast to alcohol or chocolate,'' the women will argue in a motion to the union's 9,000-strong women's conference in Cardiff next month.
Women lead ``amazingly stressful lives... with many different roles, jobs and multi-tasking. It is important that women can relax and escape the stresses of life.''
The group even have a proposal for those who do not smoke: ''Non-smokers can use cannabis by incorporating it into recipes and cooking with it.'' Though presumably not in a chocolate cake.
A spokesman for Unison dismissed the motion on Tuesday, saying it was unlikely to be passed.
``Of course it is up to the members,'' she said. ``But it is not exactly one of the more serious items on the agenda. It is tongue-in-cheek, so to speak.''

In a breath-taking gesture against human suffering everywhere, Virgin Records have paid Mariah Carey $28 million dollars not to sing. I doubt if there will be a more cost-effective humanitarian gesture this year!

Carey signed a contract with the label last April after leaving Columbia Records, her label of ten years where she emerged as the best-selling female performer of all time with 140 million albums and singles sold worldwide and a Number One single every year for the last ten years.
Based on that past performance, Virgin inked the singer to a deal that would have paid her $81.6 million for four albums. The settlement terminating her contract pays the singer $28 million, and she was paid an additional $21 million when the contract was signed last year.
