You didn't mention in your note the context of the discussion held with your son, and I'm not making light of your concerns. But I can assure your son is not innocent with respect to such matters. He's heard the street version of these things already. If you haven't discussed sexuality with him and/or made provisions for him to discuss questions he might have with someone you both trust, then you've done him a great disservice.

I may have the wrong impression but what I hear in your post is a hysterical Mom afraid her baby is growing up. He is with or without you, Make sure he has the tools he needs to grow up as well rounded young man.

Now as to the dubs seeming obsession with sex. I think that many of the older dub elders have been equally hysterical about sex. Obsessed with wanking, kissing, hand holding, telephoning, and anything else they can think of that might possibly be a link to SEX! The enlightened elders I know are much less occupied with such mundane things.

the scripture says that "he will not die" if you beat him.

This thread has touched a nerve. I don't favor "beating" any child, period. However, I think one of the problems in today's world is a complete lack of discipline and limits. I lived through the years when Dr. Spock suggested no spanking, and then changed his opinion. Discipline does not have to be spanking, but can be part of it.

In times past when "spanking" was in vogue, when limits were set, when the whole community was involved in raising children, we did not have Columbine and other such sad disasters in our schools. Now students and parents alike threaten our teachers. Don't spoil creativity, don't stunt their psyche. Oh, please. Let's get real. Our permissive society has produced fat ass kids and fat head parents who can't read, make change, or manage a checkbook.

Flame me, hate me, whatever you want. But I make no apologies for giving my kids a pop or two on the backside now and then if they really needed it. And they don't hate me and they for sure as hell haven't been arrested or failed first grade reading assignments in the fifth grade. Limits, correction, clear goals and targets and oh yes lots of hugs and kisses and special times. That's what worked with my three, and we still have hugs and kisses, and respect for others, and each other. I love my kids who are each successful in their own right.

Scanned this work last night. As to the in-fighting among dubs I have seen many similar things happen in the congregations over the years. As to his theological diatribe, can't buy much of it. All in all it seems that the real purpose of his writings is to elevate his own position as an important one. Didn't count the number of "I's" and "I've done", but I came away thinking that the fellow, however well meaning he is, was on a "ME" trip.

Just my non-biblical scholarly opinion, worth perhaps only one lepta.

at our house we hand out two snack-sized candy bars to each gremilin and ghoul (snickers and milky way).

we get about 20 visitors, so we have to get rid of the candy some way.

what treats will you be handing out on halloween night?

Why Awake! magazine of course.

Actually in our neighborhood the snooty little brats that live here wouldn''t think of going door to door asking for candy. Besides their Mummies would consider it a major social faux paus to drive them around and heaven forbid they should have to walk. Those $300 Mephisto "walking" shoes might get scuffed.

is the society really ok with this or is there like a rebel band of witnesses who set these up and run it against the societys wishes?

i wonder what the word in the kh is about sites like this.

i know when i was a jw i would never have believed i'd see something like this...not legitimately run by jw's anyway.

I am sure this fits into their definition of "beware the voice of strangers'. In due time likley there will be an article in the Awake or a KM about this. Maybe even a letter to the elders.

he preferred the natural sounds of life to music.

Oh my, imagine life without music. Reminds me of a Bethelite I knew who never watched TV or listened to the radio. When I asked him how he stayed current with world events, he said the Awake! told him everything he needed to know. Oh my, Oh my. How sad.

Just about every room in our house is linked to the music room's system. All the bedrooms have their own system but linked to the main center downstairs too. Every CD we buy is copied into our file server so it's accessible

We're working on plans now for our Florida house which will have a more sophisticted link, maybe even fiber optic links. We want all the video and music systems linked. Also looking into the new media hubs that link the PC's to the audio system.

The strongest influence remains Ted "The Boss" Jaracz. He heads one of the most powerful committees on the GB boards. i.e. Service Dept. AKA Bethel CIA. Also is the permanent coordinator of the Chaiman's committee or some such group. So he has his fingers into everything that goes on.

Ponzi Scheme?

so the society asks for donations to build kingdom halls.

it then takes the donated money and loans it back to the very people who just donated it and charges them interest!

Actually the big Borg no longer collects interest on KH loans. They stopped this practice several years ago, just aout the time they stopped invoicing congregations for a share of the costs of the CO cars. Once I had quite a heated discussion with a certain GB member aka The Boss over some of these practices. As far as I know the WTS does not hold deeds to KHalls and I'm not aware of any recent changes to this policy. The ownership is held by the local Cong. either by a corporation or a trust depending on the local laws.

Workers Comp Insurance and Quick Builds?

in any construction project a percentage of the cost is for insurance.

in a private home, at least 10% of the total cost is for workmans comp insurance.

this means that for a $250.000 house, $25,000 of that is for this type of insurance.

It's been five years or so since I was involved in any QB projects, but at that time all projects were covered under the WTS self-insurance program. However, if any small claims came up the congregation was encouraged to cover these locally so as not to impact the Lord's money.

The society has latched onto the idea of quickbuilds because they save money

Quickbuilds do not save money. In fact they cost more money. When we did a small KH remodel we found that we could do the job for less by finding materials ourselves. Considerably less. Each congregation is assessed a fee to have the Quick Build group involved in the project. This is supposed to cover their phone calls, etc. In reality it becomes a way to collect money, again.

In another state my brother in law reports that an elder was siphoning off some of this money for his personal use. This was hushed up quick. He was never reproved and no money was ever returned to anyone's knowledge.
