If memory serves, it was about $30 something in the 1980 or so. But you got all the cheese and pancakes you wanted on Sundays.

Most Overblown Examples Used at Assemblies
by What Now? inat a recent assembly, there was a talk highlighting the dangers of higher education.
the brother used an example of a young girl who went to university, began going to bars, and ended up getting drugged and gang raped - as if this happens to every young jw who chooses to get higher education.. .
what ridiculous examples have you heard used at meetings or assemblies?.

I agree the examples given on the stage about turning down education and careers and railing against "materialism" is so embarrassing, its hard to even read it. Don't you feel so sorry for the innocent children who grow up in this unhealthy environment and have no chance at building a responsible and healthy life?
I don't know if you heard the UTube talk given by Ciro Alicino (spelling), he was my old table foot in Bethel. He was talking about the birds eating all the dead bodies after the GT, and of course there are too many corpses laying around for all of the birds to consume. So God will most likely use "ANTI-MATTER" to dispose of everyone. Now that is so rich, I can't begin to tell you. And of course it means God will wipe out all the GAYS and LESBIANS, he said with much enthusiasm.
Oh you have to love that good old time Religion. Ignorant bastards,,,

It is interesting how irrational religious people become. By the way I love Fox News, the rest of the Liberal Media have lost all journalistic integrity.

Bill did make a valid point, during the rediculous exchange. He did say that if you dont believe in Eternal punishment in Hell that the entire christian belief system (his catholic one) falls apart. That is an honest statement, much like the Witness belief system completely falls apart with the realization that there is no End of the Earth event coming. What's the point of the entire religion that is totally based on the end of the world coming any minute?

what do you say to a brother-in-law elder who can't take no for an answer
by focariedu21 inmy daughter is getting married soon and she has "no kids to my wedding" policy as we plainly cannot afford it.
everyone out of the truth seems to understands this and no complaints but my abnoxious proud and pig headed brother in law can't take no for an answer as he thinks his young son is sooooooo special he needs to attend.
he called up yesterday and gave her an earfull on how his son is sooo good and her first cousin that it's sooo wrong to have him there, she came home crying.

I would tell him it is okay for him to bring his children or his neighbors children or all of the children in the Kingdom Hall to the wedding. You will just need to collect the $100 per head it will cost you in advance.

I Do Believe in Armageddon!
by Was New Boy innot the same one that the jehovah witnesses believe in.
none the less major earth changes leading up to 2012.. events where 80%+ of the earth's population is going away!.

Yes and I think you were perhaps missing a reference to the scholarly work of Michael Moore? If you feel compelled to build and live in an underground bunker for the next 20 years, I have no problem with that. Let the rest of the normal people who didnt take the Movie "Armaggedon" as being real, live in peace.
You got it James Woods. Talk to you at the end of 2012.

Memo to the writer of the article (yes the guy sitting in a brooklyn room in his bathrobe eating cheetos). Why dont you write something meaningful, like encourage the flock to get educated, get real jobs, support thier families, get life and health insurance, integrate with members of the community, help the needy (with money and time), be civic minded, vote, stop shunning your relatives, plan for your future, invest for your retirement and quit wasting your time bothering the neighbors who don't want to talk about your cult.
Hows that?

A question to the ex-JW's...
by losthobbit ini'm curious about what made you realize that your ex-religion was not "true"?.
i've had discussions with many religious people, and they're always trying to protect their beliefs, rather than allowing anything i say challenge what they believe.
was there ever something someone said to you, or something you read that maybe made you doubt your beliefs for the first time, or had a similar effect?.

I started actually "thinking" for the first time in my life. That is opposed to what witnesses do, which is to relinquish all responsibility for thought and decisions to the religion. I began to whiteboard what I actually knew was real and reanylized all of the big questions that religion attempts to answer. What is the nature of man, where did we come from, where are we going, the nature of God and the universe. The more I used logic the more I realized how ludicrous the Witness teachings were.

Witnesses at my door today
by Lily Pie inso, i've been waiting for them to do the *rounds* here for a while.
and they finally turned up.. i lead the discussion towards holy spirt and personal relationship with god.
(personal relationship with god is really about interacting with the father, jesus & the spirit, not just the spirit - but i think emphasising spirit is a simple way to get across my point) i was curious about whether or not they had one.

I think you wasted your time and they wasted thier time. No law against that. You favorite color is Blue and their favorite color is Red. Is it worth trying to convince each other your wrong?

Do all religions think there's is the only true one?
by Snoozy inis there any religions out there that actually think that any religion is good as long as you worship?.
or do they all think the other religions are under the control of satan/the devil.. funny, i knew that the jw's felt that way but never really thought about the other religions.. is there any humble enough to admit they don't have all the truth and aren't any better than any other religion?.
that's the one i want to join... snoozy.

Religion is a business. You are a customer who is "purchasing" membership into the Religion. With that purchase you receive a number of things.
1. Identity
2. Membership
3. A Social Network
4. A packaged belief system
5. The "prize" in the crackerjack box, which is the special thing only available through that religion. Nirvana, The New System, Heaven, Eden, Reincarnation, life everlasting as a mindless human devoid of emotions, passions, desire, ambitions and thought, or whatever rediculous prize they are presenting.
6. The most compelling thing religion actually provides is fulfilling a unique psychological need some people have. That is why most people who do not actually completely agree with what the religion teaches, they stay with it. There is something they find fulfilling in the relationship with the religion.
It has nothing to do with Truth. It has nothing to do with God. It is a business relationship. There are those of us who chose not to subscribe because we do not see the value in this relationship. We see it for what it is.
