Perhaps the magazine racks are just a natural evolution. JWs have slowed down so much when preaching that they are effectively stationary so why not capitalize on that.

by Unclepenn1 inthat's all i wanted to say.

by smiddy inwhile these idiots think beheading innocent aid workers journalists who have the welfare of the people at heart in these circumstances and then butchering them in such a barbaric manner is going to swing public opinion in their favour is beyond me .. if their is ever a reason to go on the ground including going into syria to rid this pox off the face of the earth this is the last straw and needs to be done now.. no more now pussyfooting around with barbaric medieval murderes , go in and annhillilate the bastards.

It could have unintended consequences - some Muslims might begin to question their whole religion. On the other hand, most Christians I know just ignore the awkward bits of the bible and don't feel that the actions of the Ku Klux Klan, for example, have anything to do with their religion.

Leaving the JWs, experiencing Christianity and finding freedom! (But it took awhile)
by im_free inthis is my first post here.. i was raised in "the truth", and am an ex-bethelite who worked in brooklyn for several years back in the 90's.
a few years after i left bethel, i started to become disillusioned after doing research about the society and reading crisis of conscience (i know..i wasn't supposed to do that lol).
i eventually stopped attending meetings and going out in service.

I was a bit puzzled by your second post. You seem to be under the impression that atheists deny that Jesus ever existed. In my experience most people accept that there probably was such a religious-political Jewish leader active in the Middle East at that time. However atheists reject the notion that this individual was in some sense divine, on the grounds of lack of supporting evidence.
You are arguing I think that the subsequent growth of Christianity could not have happened by chance. In fact its major influence on Western society might never have happened without one event - the conversion of the Roman emporor Constantine. Anyway, couldn't a Hindu argue in exactly the same way? How could their religion have grown to 1 billion adherents by chance?
You're obviously full of questions and I'm sure you'll be searching for answers. My recommended reading would be 'The Magic of Reality' by Richard Dawkins - it's very clear and readable.

Punk - agreed. You can't just believe when you don't (at least I can't).
Actually I'm pretty happy. Would I be even happier if I truly believed that I would be resurrected and would live forever in paradise and meet dead friends and relatives again? Well, maybe. Would I be happier if other people didn't believe they would live forever etc? Definitely. There are way too many nutjobs around who think their murderous activities are guaranteeing them a place in heaven.

More frustrated than angry.
Sometimes I wonder why it is not obvious to everyone that religions made up explanations for things that were not understood at the time (earthquakes, volcanoes, mental illness etc). When these things have subsequently been explained, why do people cling to the false beliefs (e.g. young earth creationist)? Why do some people think that the human race is special in a universe of at least 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars?
Then I see newspaper reports claiming that people with faith are happier than those without. That really makes me fed up.
