I called them and they said the department that handles doctrinal questions were out to lunch. She said call back at 12:00. So I will. Actually that is the first time I ever called them. I plain on also asking for someone to talk to about the horrible situations that is going on in the Hall I attend.

    defd,

As a mother of many children, I ask you to please think long and hard about what you are doing to your childrens' lives. As you are questioning things, you may soon realize that there are many things the WTS is wrong in promoting; many of which have long-lasting detrimental affects.

All my children were raised by very strict JW standards and I can't honestly say I always felt good about it, but felt it was my duty to obey even if I didn't fully understand. Now my children are grown and raising their children with holidays...maybe even going more overboard than necessary because they want them to experience things they so missed. I feel very privileged to now be able to share these celebrations with my grown children and grandkids, but I'm afraid I will always feel remorse for making them stand up for things that I never had to experience. I am ever grateful that they don't resent my mistakes.

Please, please keep looking and if you don't feel the need to question things for yourself, do it for your children.

Believe me, there is nothing more traumatic to a child

    ah, let me rephrase that

There are things that are far more traumatic!

I was fortunate enough to never be sexually abused as a child!

I have found no direct command from the slave that we couldnt celebrate it.

The reasoning that I recall was along the same lines as observing Mother's Day or Father's Day - since we should honour our parents at all times, it was considered somewhat foolish to set aside a special day to give them honour. The same with Thanksgiving: we were supposed to 'Give Thanks' to God at all times, not just one day out of 365.

    However, consider Romans 14:5, 6....

One [man] judges one day as above another; another [man] judges one day as all others; let each [man] be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day observes it to Jehovah. Also, he who eats, eats to Jehovah, for he gives thanks to God; and he who does not eat (as in fasting) does not eat to Jehovah, and yet gives thanks to God.

Don't the Scriptures support the idea of this being a completely personal decision that is between the individual and Jehovah?

Please tell us what they say when you ring them. And think about they will try to apply the scriptures.

I don't know how more direct it could get.

School and Jehovah's Witnesses Brochure sj p. 21 Holidays and Celebrations ***

    National

    Holidays
Other holidays are somewhat different in nature. These are not so universally celebrated, but may be unique to a particular country. For example, there may be national days of thanksgiving. In some places there may also be a certain day set aside to memorialize a nation’s war dead, or a day to remember the birth of a country or certain prominent presidents, rulers or national heroes.
Jehovah’s Witnesses also respectfully refrain from participating in such national holidays. Though we respect the authorities in whatever country we may reside, for conscientious reasons we do not give them what we view as worshipful honors. We remain neutral toward all such celebrations. This is in keeping with Jesus’ words regarding his followers: "They are no part of the world, just as I am no part of the world."—John 17:16.

Define "celebrate". If eating a seasonal meal on a specific day is a celebration I'd take that definition as a "stretch".

Does Thanksgiving promote a individual, associaton or event?

Is worship or veneration of a concept or idol necessary for Thanksgiving?

Do you like turkey and cranberrys on Thursday, especially while watching the Lions get trounced?

That's what I thought. Most JW's in the US eat turkey and watch football.... Celebrate away defd.

That's right....I forgot the School Brochure did quite a good job in compartmentalizing everything, didn't it? Probably because our kids took the brunt of things when it came to standing up for JW beliefs.
