I remember when the elders learned I worked in a place that rented adult movies, they asked me if I ever looked at them. I mentioned that I had to see them when people rented them and when I put them back on the shelf. The mentioned that it might be a good idea to either quit or tell my boss I would not do anything with them. I told them I took the second option and they believed me. I never said anything to my boss, and just went about my life and never mentioned it to them. I figured, if by chance I was seen renting them or handling them by an elder, I could say I had to that one time.

Watched a few films with spicy content or language, such as "Body Heat" with Kathleen Turner, and "Galaxina", "Animal House", "1941", and a few others.

I found my dads secret porn mag-stash after he died, when I was 13. He was an MS. I hid them, so they wouldn`t be thrown out when my mom threw out all his stuff. I took good care of them, and they "helped me" (lol) thru puberty... Porn mags from the 70s, Dolly Parton-lookalikes, with...well, how do I put it...a relaxed attitude to hair in certain places...

And I suppose, Auldsoul, it was the Holy Spirit that interpreted all of stillajwexelder's exclamation marks for you.

You can justify his flippancy about being a significant person in a religious organisation by turning it around and blaming the religion as being based on false beliefs, but at the end of the day, stillajwexelder must have known he was not being guided by the Holy Spirit when he accepted the position as elder, just as he knew that, with the position he held, it was not right for him to read porn.

It was his choice - his choice to become a JW, his choice to be an elder, his choice to read porn, his choice to be flippant about it.

What does it say about me Skyman??? That I believe that we are responsible for our own actions? That I believe that when we put ourselves in a position of trust we should honour that position and if we feel we can't, we should bow out respectfully without dishonouring it and if we do happen to dishonour it, we should never in the future be proud of that? I hope that's what it says about me.

I am ashamed to admit that I watched all kinds of evil things when I was a JW, even when I was on the servant body.

    Welcome to the board, Elise.

    Are you an active JW?

Certainly not everyone succumbs to porn while being a witness.
My ex and I were very strict with ourselves. We made a vow to each other when we got married not to watch any R rated shows. And we did not from 1980-2001 (my marriage years)

He was an elder and took all counsel very seriously.
We did not even get a t.v. set until we were married 5 years and then we got only a little one and no VCR.
"Pure as the driven snow" then!

If life was only that simple...What if he was raised as a witness? (I don`t know if he was, but let`s say that he was). I too believe that at a certain point, everyone has to make their own choices, but sometimes, circumstances make this point come later rather than sooner. Say you are born into a family of fanatical JWs, just a hint of "apostasy" makes everyone go emperor Nero on your butt, you have no choice other than to be a JW, or loose your whole family. Even though you might have the brains and the ability to think for yourself, enough to see thru the WTS-propaganda and amateurish Bible-interpretations, you might not have any other choice than to go along. And if so, why not then indulge in such horrible "sin" as looking in magazines with nude women in them, in secrecy? Life is more complicated than what you seem to think.

Or perhaps this has more to do with your view on pornography? If so, that is valid, but that`s a whole different discussion.
