When you know the amount of calories in what you eat, it's easier to make choices.

I was surprised to know that a beer is only 100 calories, but the small bag of chips I had with my beer was 360 calories.

I also love eating oatmeal cookies, but when I saw the amount of calories on the package, 420 calories each !!! I couldn't believe it.

Its not about diet but about lifestyle change.

If you want to be a certain weight and always be that you need to change your existing habits and adopt a permanent change. You cant do diets, as you have witnessed (yuk I hate that word lol!) as soon as you return to 'normal' intake, you put the weight back on and usually much quicker than before. So set yourself limits, eat properly and healthily and know that you have to do so for the rest of your life. The last thing you need to be is obsessed by food and diets tend to make you think of one thing - what your having next. Dont have temptation foods in the house, find something to do when cravings hit you and above all stick to it.

Initially this is about will power - hard to produce in ourselves at times, but people do, so can you. But eventually it will become second nature, like creating a new habit but a good one

Hope it goes well for you

    Sounds sensible.

I don't have sugar in coffee, I have sweetners, but I do tend to drink too many cups each day.

My usual day goes like this: breakfast two slices of toast with low fat cheese spread. Lunch: a sandwich and soup (sometimes a large barm type sandwich)....dinner; pasta with sauce or chicken in a sauce with rice or meat with veggies (never potatoes). In between I don't eat chocolate etc. The problem probably lies with takeaways at weekends and beer / wine (lots of calories in alcohol) I also love cheese so some sandwiches are fatty....

Where is the smilie for a pig?

you mean the sheep Hey, that sounds like not too bad a diet. I have takeaways on odd occasions now I've finished loosing weight but they really have to be the exception and not the rule. I found when I was loosing weight there would be enough occasions during the year where you would have to have one such as when having friends down to stay, that there was no place for them in my normal weekly routine. Another thing I did was educate myself just how bad the bad things really were so if I REALLY needed that bag of crisps - I knew it was the equivalent to nearly two slices of bread, and those Frey Bentos puddings I loved were nearly HALF a days allowance of calories. This put everything into perspective.

I have worked with a nutrionist for years. The things I have learned from her consist of: 5 or 6 small meals thru out the day, to keep your metabolism stable. Drink your 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. The first meal of the day should always on consist of protein. If you are like me and have a sluggish system (i.e., the thought of food before 10 a.m. makes me vomit) drink a protein shake with fruit in it. For a woman the most important thing is to make sure you get your vitamins. Omega 3s in particular. Get some flax seed and grind it up to a powder and put some Omega 3 fatty acids in your shake in the morning or over your veggies. Protein is very important to have. Now sometimes I have problems with this because of living somewhat of a vegan life, but nuts are a great source of fat and protein. And they are yummy. In the right amount through out your day, they help you maintain your energy. Try to avoid starches, however, they are not evil like many people try to make them out. But for my body, I can only eat straches once a week. The rest of the time it has to be protein, veggies, fruits, etc. My favorite thing to eat that give you the crunch and the taste is cucumbers and/or celery with hummus. I love that snack and it is pretty filling because you can eat as much cucumber or celery you want and not have to worry about portion size. And as B-man said sometimes you are still hungry, a veggie drink or a fruit smoothie (not one with ice cream but fruit and ice) can go a long way. Best of luck in your reaching your goal. Also, it has been said that it has to be a life style, that is the biggest thing. Don't get too frustrated with youself if it takes you a while to get into your routine. Be patient and you will see results.

hi, darlin! I share your pain.......lol.......I'm a size 22-24 here in the USA........I heard something cool the other day: In the morning, eat like a Queen/King; for lunch, eat like a Princess/Prince; and for dinner, eat like a PAUPER. I am a carb addict..........gimme that bread and butter, or that pasta with sauce.......I've been trying to cut those, also making sure that your digestion is working well helps......I heard a gross fact about when John Wayne died, he had 45 lbs of matter in his colon.......so, if you have a sluggish digestive system, there are some great natural products out there that will help with that.......I know that growing up in an angst ridden home, I always had stomach problems. you are already doing the exercise thing........walking is THE BEST form of exercise in the world.......it burns calories and keeps your hips, buttocks and thighs trim and muscular. IT is MY favorite exercise. I am also going to look into urban rebounding.......quite simply, it's a mini trampoline that you bounce on in a very controlled way, which exercises your muscles and burns extra calories, and it is KIND to your joints. Hope this helps!!! Love, Me

    Eat less, do more.

    DON'T DIET.

Just eat good quality (as little processed) food three times a day, and control your portiions if you have lost the natural ability to know when you've eaten enough (something that happens to many people).

Then grit your teth and exercise more - of course it's boring but it's the only way. If you get out of breath speed-walking the dog, walk a little slower so you don't become winded and allow your body to get used to that effort level before going faster.

Don't expect over-night results, don't set an unrealsitic target weight, realise that if you are in a sedentary job you'll need to be exercising hard enough to feel a little breatheless 3 x 20 minutes minimum a week, or longer periods of less intense exercise.

Oh; does your weight gain match a change in lifestyle? Stress can often cause an increase in weight (due to Cortisole), that's just one example.

Oh Sirona - I totally know what you mean! We have similar downfalls - wine and cheese! I'm not much of a chocolate fan either and never eat pudding but I suspect we satisfy our sweet tooths with the old vino more often than we do with fruit. More exercise is definitely the key - what about swimming. I know, like me, you like to write, and I find the pool (as does Helen Dunmore - a very good writer at times and Tracy Emin - the artist) the pool a great way to think up ideas and get inspiration and characters. Its just a good meditational place. Bike rides with your partner are another good one.

I will however convey the best weight loss secret of all - and that is splitting up with your partner - I lost 3 stone after I broke up with my last boyfriend and if I keep getting fatter then I may have to apply the same to Mr C! (Only Kidding).

(I am a size 16 and often a size 18 on top as I definitely got bigger during the months where I couldnt exercise after my accident - so you are still slimmer than me. I would be happy to be a size 14 again - I didn't really like being a 12 - I felt too skinny and I looked a bit skeletal in photos as opposed to now where I tend to look like one of the Tellytubbies).

Ballistic has some good ideas there too!

I bought this guy's book (see link below)...basically (in the beginning) he cut out sugar and tried to eat as close to natural as possible. He also began weight training and started doing active things (hiking, kayaking, biking). He lost around 170lbs. He apparently has some sort of blog going now. It's an interesting read:

Another blog I like is The Amazing Adventures of Diet Girl. She has also dropped quite a bit and is keeping it off.
