There are two catagories of truths, relative and absolute ( they are intertwined giving rise to what may be called "one truth"). Evolution is a relative truth . Causes and conditions lead to changes in causes and conditions which lead to changes in causes and conditions etc, etc etc and on and on. But all of these changes are like the relative waves on the surface of the sea. They appear, they disappear, some are big and frothy some are small with little white tips etc. The absolute truth is water. All of them are water. The waves are many and varied but they remain water always. If the waves don't know they are water , they may think they have a separate existence and become threatened. This fear gives rise to the kind of world we have. So the perception of relative truth is not the answer. The answer is the perception of the relative and the absolute together. When this is achieved , life's objects have a different "quality" . This quality is sensed and expressed as..."all things are One". Walking in that One truth will transform human behavior and the world.

Norm. This is difficult stuff . We are not used to thinking about the source of the relative world . Nor how the source is intertwined with each manifestation. Nor how it is possible to perceive both at the same time. Quite difficult. I can see why you answered " clear as mud". It really makes no sense unless it is experienced. The experience is the 'eye opener". We are talking about a change in the "quality"of perception. You know , the world can be seen in a grain of sand. That kind of stuff. I throw this out there to point to the fact in case someone is tired of beating their head against the same old wall of relative knowledge. Some are.

hey Ian,

evolutionists believe all men are equal seeing that we all came from a common ancestor. That being the case, would it not serve man to believe in evolution?

the philosophical implications of evolutionary biology are indeed that all living ORGANISMS on this planet are inherintly, and technically equal. evolution does not teach that humans are a special pinnacle of this evolutionary process. after all, in addition to sharing common ancestors with all other living things, they ALL have also survived to this point in time, meaning that they all have gone through the same bottle necks and whatnot through time. i think this is just as important as remembering that all homo sapiens are equal. but herein is a bit of a paradox. i would like to say: "look here, be careful what you destroy on this planet. trees, animals etc." but in order to survive, we must live off of other living things. we do not survive off of dirt and rock and air. we survive off of other organisms. cows, tomatos, etc. so, while we are all technically equal, we have some responsibility as the sentient, top-o-the-foodchain organisms to find the middle road, the balanced and sustainable road to our existence on this planet with all other organisms, including other apes. and of course, the abrahamic faiths are not going to help us find this balance because they teach that humans are special creation, made in their God's image, and that their God will come and make everything better, or that he will reward their credulity in the next world. which then leaves this world to do as they please to, a la george dubya, osama bin laden, isreal, hezbollah. you get the picture. the most dangerous apes on the planet are hands down the abrahamic ones generally, as world events seem to indicate. whic makes sense. they don't believe in evolution anyways. wasn't it bill hicks would remarked: "in some places people are yelling 'REVOLUTION!', and in other places: 'EVOLUTION.'" one in the same, imo. evolution is a revolution. ts

Evolution produced the capacity for fantasy and religious deception.

Religion is a problem, not an answer.

We are nevertheless here. Beliefs about origins have caused so much turmoil.

It is where we are going from NOW that matters.

We do not need answers, as much as the right questions. After thousands of years how much nearer are we to that?

As many have pointed out, there is no single causal link from a given theory about the origins of life to human ethics and behaviour (which are different things btw). From the "Biblical" belief in creation one can infer the need for respecting every creature just as the right to kill and subdue in the name of the Creator. From the scientific theory of evolution one can either conclude to the need for responsible human and inter-species ethics or justify competition and domination.

I would add that the notions of "equality" or "hierarchy" do not actually belong to evolution as a scientific theory. They are cultural constructs which we project on the theory in an effort to justify our ethical views. In whatever "knowledge" we may have -- right or wrong, scientific or religious -- we always seek, and find, the mirror reflection of our own face.

The watchtower is not the answer but i don't think evolution is the answer either.

The universe and life and living things is too complex fot it to evolve.

The first principle of macroeconomics is that there are limited resoures on this earth, but humans have unlimited wants. This principle, not evolution, is the great equalizer of humanity.
Whether they use religion or survival of the fittest as their excuse, some groups will always rationalize that they are more equal than others, which they believe justifies their claim on more than their fair share of resources--money, power, possessions and land.
Cynical? Maybe, but dismally true. True kindness and generosity are so rare.

Is evolution the answer? Nope! Course, it depends upon what the question is. If its whether or now humans are "equal" being the same species doesn't make us "equal". Some are midgets, some are giants, some have six fingers, some are perfectly porportioned with hidden genetic defects or propensities that manifest themselves when triggered by certain environmental ques. Equality itself has to be defined before one makes the leap of "faith" that any ism or world view is "thee answer".
