Dear Diary,
The tenor's closing aria in TOSCA - the rapturous beauty of Puccini's exquisite melody, the voice of il tenore wrapping around, then weaving itself throughout - am I still breathing? It is of another world. It surrounds and embraces me, so gently and with such tenderness, then, forgetting me, soars to the heights! YOU must listen to this glorious tribute to high drama and the sublime "bella voce." [I believe the tenor's aria, Act III, is "E lucevan le stelle" - "When the stars were brightly shining."] Maria Callas, Giuseppe di Stefano, Tito Gobbi - 1953 production, EMI recording.
Miss Ann Tropics - you are so kind and dear. I am a mere autodidact: self-taught, glutton for knowledge and learning. I have stacks of books and dictionaries on my kitchen table, astride my "Dear Diary" machinery. And of course, the radio, ever on NPR and the classics. I'm reading everything I can get my hands on, then "excitedly" passing it on to you! Do you feel the energy?!?!? It's all about planting a seed. The aim? To stir up interest in a multitude of wonderful new worlds of exploration. I am a humble educator who continues with this little entry because of your very first words of encouragement to me a month ago.
Bless you, and bless you again!
