OK, JH, >>I<< repent. T'was Crumpet that transposed her own figures in the first example, using 33,360 in one place and 33,630 in another.

crumpet:
Where scully did the 109% figure come from.
whenever you see 100% somewhere, it is the equivalent of 1 (ie, 100/100 = 1)
When you do the division in your example, GNI(UK) / GNI(Fr) , the question was relative to the two numbers and since you want to know %(GNI(UK) > GNI(Fr) ) I started with the assumption that GNI(Fr) = 100%, or 1.
From there you go to the algebraic formula GNI(UK) / GNI(Fr) = x / 1 = 100x / 100% = 109.85%/100% = 1.0985/1
Basically the idea is to discover on a per unit basis (I'm assuming £ but it could also be euros or $US for that matter) how much more the GNI is in the UK vs France. So for every 1 unit of measurement that France has, the UK generates 1.0985, or 9.85% more than France.

Yeah, I think that she was drinking....

I think more mathematicians should drink beer while reducing their equations (or whatever it is they do with them).
It would make mathematics so much more interesting. -

Crumpet said - "Russia uses 5480 electricity in kWH per capita - America uses 13078 kwh... "
What it _really_ means is that Russia hasn't got the electricity available due to a slight reactor meltdown... sorry - couldn't resist that.

In the example quoted however it makes no sense to talk about Americans using 138% more power
since the America's power use is not related directly to Russia's power use.
In order to use 138% you would have to say that America uses 138% more power than what Russia currently uses.
It makes more sense when talking about seperate quantities to use the total %age so you can say
America's power use is 238% of Russian power use, which is less misleading.
It is useful to talk about a percentage increase or decrease if you talking about a change in one statistic rather than a difference.

So what you are all saying is put the tea away and knock out the vino and it will all make sense...okay I trust all you apostates!
LOL JIM TX.
Scully the GNI was being measured in US dollars.
I've written the analysis now - just need to trim down to 300 words. I didnt even mention the Malawi figures....just like the GB...see I can turn any thread back to being dub related - however loosely!

That might be the answer Crumpet. Your on UK time (past tea) and over here in the states, we haven't had our coffee yet.

Good to know. It's more important, though, to compare apples to apples (US$ to US$) rather than apples to oranges (US$ to £).
