As minimus says so succintly, anyone could be considered an idiot for remaining in the society. Look at the stupendous leaps of logic they have to make to stay in the unjust system, "wait on Jehovah", "light getting brighter", "Jehovah was testing our loyalty", "everyone is imperfect", "where else would we go?", "it's worse out there". Elders are simply deluded members who have been given the next degree of authority.
Some may wake up to the delusion, others realize there's something wrong but believe there's nothing better, others hope for improvement, others are trapped by family or financial ties, and some are sincere "believers". These last may not progress much in the society, but they likely do much good within the constraints they are given.

Fools who have power of any sort tend to be more dangerous and destructive however.

OK! I can see folk getting upset here!
What I am saying, is they ENFORCE the Society's doctrine. I'm not saying that those who are not Elders are NOT idiots. If you read the beginning of the thread I said I was also an idiot if you want to go back to the beginning an check on that.
What spectacularly wound me up is the suicide of a local JW woman. She was already depressed as her boyfriend had run off with another JW woman who was pregnant. She confessed to the Elders that she had had an affair with the JW Elder who had run off. They DF'd her but there was no punishment for the Elder or his lady love as they had quickly DA'd themselves as soon as the new girlfriend found she was pregnant.
The DF'd Sister quickly sank into a deeper and deeper depression. Her parents, an Elder and his wife met with the elders to plead with them to be allowed to keep visiting their now seriously mentally ill daughter. They said absolutely NO!! They could not have anything to do with their daughter.
She killed herself.
As I said. The Elders enforce the WTBTS policy and apply the punishment alloted by the WTBTS!
Elders are idiots. People who listen to Elders are Idiots and the WTBTS is basically full of idiots. Even the well meaning ones are still idiots.
They switch off their commonsense and follow wisdom that comes from the lips of the Governing Body that is as rare as rocking horse shit.
And there I rest my case!

yep who are the fools?...the fools who lead or the fools who follow ...the place is full of fools full of their own self importance...I fully agree that the fools are many who fool others while really fooling themselves...the fools....one thing's for sure...I won't get fooled again...just fooling guys...da ninja..(a fool)

Elders are ordinary men that are given power and the majority of them end up abusing that power.

Regarding the elders who forbade the parents to see their daughter...
Some elders may be idiots, but it sounds like these were cruel.
It's SO much easier to forgive an idiot than a cruel person.

But what of the parents who obeyed the Elder's ruling, against their own better judgement? Why did they ask permission in the first place? Double fools.

one of the elders who disfellowshipped my dad, I got his address and would send him subscriptions to Playboy, Penthouse, tv guide, Cat Fancy, I forgot all the subscriptions I sent him but he must have got tons of magazines, trial samples, free information, and Mormon Church visits, OK I was 15 years old at the time, and yes it was fun

The higher up you go, the more resources you are given about the Watchtower Society. The elders, or hounders, are given the book to hound the flock with. And this information is not available to the flock. The higher up, the more information. And the more information, the more integrations about what kind of organization it really is one should be able to make.
The lowers are usually scammed, or have no choice because they are born into the cult. But, once you get hold of the elders' handbook, you have higher accountability. Even so, some manage to break out and think on their own after a time of following it. Those elders come to their senses. The real idiots are the ones at the top, who make up this bulls*** and pass it along to the congregations. For the most part (notably, Raymond Franz was the exception), those are initiating the whole scam and will have any elders who do not obey the directives removed. The real a**holes and idiots are therefore the members of the Governing Body that insist on keeping status quo.
