DJK said: Footsteps coming up the cellar stairs. Without a doubt they were male wearing shoes. Then we could hear the doorknob turn and the cellar door would creek when opened. Lying in bed, we couldn't see the door, but the creek was distinctive with this door. We knew it may have opened..............Then the footsteps continued in a u-turn into the bathroom. Again a distinctive sound that matched the bathroom door told us the door was closing. Ten seconds in all comes to an end when we hear the bathroom door close..............The bathroom light was kept on all the time for the kids and we could see the light on a wall from our bed. The light remained on the wall and it shouldn't have if the door actually closed.
That would have been enough to make a believer out of me. I've never seen a ghost or anything supernatural but I believe they exist. The closest verifiable experience I've had that I couldn't explain happened a couple of weeks ago when I phoned Delilah. A bit of background info: She's got 4 telephones at her place. The one in the main hallways has a red bar on it that lights up when someone picks up the extension somewhere else in the house (that way---she knows if one of the kids are eavesdropping on her conversations...heh-heh-heh). Several times when she's been on it, the bar will light up, even when no one else is home.
Anyhoo, I phoned her at 12:30pm the one day (I looked on my computer screen in the bottom right hand corner to see what time it was). The phone rang 3 times and then someone picked the phone up, but it sounded more like a kid struggling to pick up the receiver. No one said anything so I said "Hellooooooo..." 3 times. No one answered which annoyed me, but I thought it might have been her 2 year old grandson picking up the phone and not knowing what to say, so I hung up. I called right back and the phone rang and rang and rang. No one there so I thought "screw this" and hung up. I finally got a hold of her that night and asked her if she was home at 12:30 and told her what happened. She went "Are you serious?" Turns out she had been out that morning but her daughter and grandson were there. She pulled up in the driveway about that time as she was going to be driving them somewhere. Her daughter was just heading out the door with her son in her arms at 12:30pm when the phone rang. She looked at the ID and it said "Long Distance" so she went to pick it up on the third ring and suddenly the red bar on the phone lit up and the phone stopped ringing, indicating that another extension in the house had been picked up. That kinda freaked her out and she left with her son, got in the car and told Delilah what happened.
I have no explanation for that one.
