A 1984 Honda Civic Hatchback in light blue. It was a 4 speed stick, no radio or AC. I paid $500 down, my father cosigned for me, and I bought for about $8000, it was new. I still have the paperwork filed away. No power in that car but it was mine and I even paid it off.

First car: 1963 Ford Fairlane, dark blue, that I bought for $200. A year or so later I bought another, white, for $75, which my buddy and I put a Galaxy three speed manual transmission (on the column) in. It had the V-8 260 engine - smaller bore but same block as the awesome Ford 289.

When we put in the transmission, we got the linkage backwards, so 1st was where 3rd should be, etc. Really odd to drive, but you could shift up the gears with the same hand you were steering with, which when you're 18 is a pretty smooth move!

Singer Chamois Coupe singer chamois coupe...sounds posher than it was but i loved it...head gasket kept blowing but it was quite easy to fix. all my pals were about 6 months older than me and they spent so much money getting driving lessons that when they passed their test they couldn't afford to run a car...so i bought a car and had them sit next to me wherever we went (which we were allowed to do in days of yore) spent nothing on lessons - drove everywhere - passed in 2 months - still had a car to drive...........result

1975 Honda Civic. It was 15 years old when my husband and I got it. It cost us only $150! Had over 200k on it, of course.

We spent about $300 on it and it was a great trusty, rusty commuter car for 2 years in Los Angeles. It was very much like a soda can with wheels. The gear shift fell thru the floor and we just hooked it up with a coat hanger. We was po' folk (students) then, fo' sho.

Then we sold it to a junkyard for $50. Can't beat that!
