When Meetings Went Overtime, What Did You Do?

This often happened in a bookstudy I was "priviledged" to attend. The bookstudy was supposed to go from 7:30 - 8:45, but Brother Tardy invariably showed up at 7:32 and would leisurely say hello to everyone and pass out the books to his kids. He'd finally get started at about 7:35. He'd spend about a half hour on the first paragraph, then half-heartedly pick up the pace as the time escaped him.

Since I was often the assigned reader, once the meeting began running overtime, I would read as fast as I could and refuse to offer any comments. If he asked me to say the closing prayer, I would say the quickest one I could.

I would drift away into day dreaming, what else was there to do other than get up and leave? Fortunately this did not happen very often.

I would feel the blood boil under my skin because I anxiously wanted to leave and go home or I wanted to talk to a cute boy at the hall. Ha. I just remembered being annoyed.

I haven't attended in years, and wasn't very assertive when I did. I did nothing. Facial expressions and discontent obviously don't work, since that's nothing out of the ordinary. I think now I'd probably establish eye contact with the speaker, raise my wrist in the air and point at my watch. That's pretty unequivocal.

I used to look at my watch constantly ... after I had packed away all my books and opened the song book to the scheduled song for that night.

If it were the bookstudy, I'd just keep looking at the exit.

I did what you did, Minimus.

I got up and walked out of the hall whenever this happened. Didn't give a hoot how it looked to anybody. I also did this at a home bookstudy years ago when it was conducted by an arrogant man who had more regard for his long-winded counsel than he did for working people's time.
