my guess is that they would rather sit in the car gossiping as long as possible, rather than actually go door to door.
Oh.....they counted the time, alright. I would have!
Your held-back thoughts were precious.
It probably wasn't your place to do so, but I would have gone out to the service car
and said, "Since the elder is too inconsiderate to you all, you are welcome to come in
and have some coffee. We don't want to overwhelm Dad, so I will kick him out while
you come in, and he can wait for you outside."
You are a wonderful daughter, Mary. You held your tongue for your parents and helped
them out. Good job. Good observations about the JW's, also.
So technically, none of them should have counted the 'time' they spent either in the driveway, or sitting in the kitchen with my Dad, on their Field Service Report. How many here think they actually DID NOT count it as time? Anyone? Anyone?
Technically, you are correct. Elders (and pioneers and others) bend the rules all the time.
They figure this is good works and don't stay long, so they can add it to their service time.
Funny thing is- if the elders were directly told not to count the time, only the tiniest fraction
would actually stop by.
I have known elders to spend the entire time (while others are knocking on doors in the snow)
on Saturday driving from hospital to hospital to bed-ridden member's homes. They would
count it. Heaven forbid if they had to get their time in with the others then make visits on their
own. That might actually be LOVING. (the second part, not the field service.)
No hon that's not me in de picture. I'm really as dumb as an ox and ugly as a mule.
But your comments are HOT!!!!!! We can tell that you are, too.
Dear Mary,
Thanks for sharing this with us. We're sure glad that your dad is doing better and that's prolly cuz you did an intervention. While it's not identical to your situation - maybe the reverse - I get so exasperated with my JW friends when there's this hand wringing over "should we or shouldn't we" when it comes to extending normal human kindness. Sometimes it's a DFed relative or some such circumstance where the governing principle is, "The Society says we can't do that ..." or some such nonsense!
I used to have the same confusion, so I understand their quandary. I just try to speak quietly and patiently about the love and compassion of Christ and what Robert Lang said [and possibly acted out] when confronted with assisting a young DFed mother at a NY Kingdom Hall. The elders, as Ray Franz said in ISOCF, were emasculated men.
Would you have put that differently, Dear Mary?????????
Love,
CoCo
They're only supposed to count it if the person is NOT baptized.
Good job Mary, and for being so loving and kind to your parents.
Most of the elders that i knew they would make 1-2 RV on Saturday morning and then try to contact those that were "weak"
while others waited in the car.
Did they count the time? Take a guess.
I'm glad your father is doing better Mary. You were very courageous and honorable in holding your tongue.
I think the most disgusting similar situation I saw was when my friend's son was in a motorcycle accident. He was in intensive care, and a member of the HLC stopped buy. He asked if there was anything he could do. She said yes, pray with me.
HE REFUSED!!!!! There was a Catholic priest in the same area, and he said he didn't want to pray in front of the Catholic priest. So, he left...he just left her there. He said there were other people he had to visit.
My friend's son was ruled brain dead shortly thereafter; he was removed from life support later that evening. At least she had sisters with her during her time of need.

I was going to, but I thought I should wait until I can offer him some green pea soup.
