1929 was the very last year that the JW's printed anything teaching that Christ's second coming occured in 1874.

There was a period which followed that lasted about three years where it is difficult to tell what the official teaching was.

The April 30th 1930 issue of The Golden Age states:

"Jesus has been present since the year 1914" (p. 503)

But the October 15, 1930 issue of The Watch Tower states:

"...the second advent of the Lord Jesus Christ dates from about 1875." (p. 308)

The 1932 booklet What Is Truth states:

"The prophecy of the Bible, fully supported by the physical facts in fulfulment thereof, shows that the second coming of Christ dates from the fall of the year 1914" (p. 48)

The Watchtower followed suit in 1933.

The statements in 1932 and 1933 were clear and unambiguous. That the second coming of Christ and the commencement of the parousia were one and the same was one of Russell's very earliest teachings. This was set out specifically in The Object and Manner of Our Lords Return which was published in 1877. JW's have always believed this

    TD,

Thanks for the additional information about that three-year period of confusion between 1930 and 1933 about what the Society's official teaching was about Jesus' "advent," "presence" and "second coming" actually was.

I think I will leave my footnote on page 22 as it originally was when I said that there is some evidence that Rutherford first mentioned 1914 as the beginning of Christ's Second Coming in the 1930s.

    Hi Don,

I wouldn't change the footnote either, if I were you. It doesn't affect the more important point you are making.

M.J. is right that many of the references in the 1930's concentrate on the enthronement of Jesus as king and the birth of the kingdom rather than on his coming or presence. A number of events that had all been previously dated to different years all had to be consolidated and this makes it difficult to find the "perfect quote" showing that the date for Christ's coming / advent / parousia / return had indeed changed from 1874 to 1914.

At the same time though, there can be little doubt as to what the offical teaching was. The evidence is overwhelming:

"Concerning his second coming as Judge and King, Christ Jesus said: 'When the Lord shall come in his glory, and all his holy angels with him, then will he sit upon his throne of glory,' and that would be the time that he would as a shepherd divide the sheep from the goats. (Matt. 25:31-46) He began his reign in 1914, but it was in 1918 when he came to the temple for judgement and for the separation of the sheep and goats." The Watchtower April 1, 1933 p. 100

"This, in the light of the fulfilment of other prophecies, fixes the time of the coming of the Great Prophet foreshadowed by Moses and of the fulfilment of the prophecy on the grander scale, and which time began with the year 1914." The Watchtower May 15, 1933 p. 119

"The seventh world power continues to "stand up against the Prince of princes" by steadfastly resisting the great fact that the Gentile times ended in 1914 and that Christ Jesus is now present, and that he is earth's rightful King, and that all should bow to him. The Watchtower July 1, 1933 p. 198

"In 1914 that time limit ended and Christ Jesus, the King of righteousness, was installed upon his holy throne. The end of the Gentile times and the coming of earth's King, was the great event to which the faithful followers of Christ had looked forward." The Watchtower February 15, 1934 p. 56

"Christ Jesus, the Greater Moses was likewise refused or rejected by the nation of Israel in A.D. 33 and was crucified in antitypical Egypt and was later raised from the dead and taken to heaven. After waiting a long period of time, Christ Jesus is sent back, in the 1914 (A.D.), clothed with full power and authority to rule." The Watchtower May 1, 1934 p. 133

"With the coming of the Lord Jesus as King in the year 1914 the whole world was under the dominating control of Satan, he operating chiefly through his religious agents, and the people were in the dark as to the means of escape or fleeing to a place of safety and being protected at Armageddon. The Watchtower January 15, 1938 p. 24

"When on earth Jesus gave his great prophecy concerning his second coming and the end of the world. (Matthew, chapter twenty-four) Chapter six of The Revelation parallels that prophecy, and is a tableau in which Christ Jesus is the chief actor. It is Christ Jesus who opens the "seven seals" of the book "in the right hand of him that sat on the throne", thus proving that no man can open the prophecies; but God permits his men to understand the prophecies after the seals are openend. It does not even follow that a man would understand the prophecies as soon as the seals are open. It can now be seen that the events pictured in the first five seals were fulfilled from AD. 1914 to 1918, but the meaning thereof man could not understand until after the coming of the Lord to his temple, in 1918. Prior thereto the faithful church had been appliying the prophecy of Matthew twenty-four to the events that came to pass from A.D. 1874 to 1914. Not until after 1918 was it understood by the church that these sealed events apply after 1914; and hence the seals were not open to or discerned by the John class, that is to say, by the remnant until after 1918, and, in fact, very little until 1922." The Watchtower June 15, 1938 p. 189

"Jesus Christ told his apostles what conditions would exist on earth at the time of his coming, by whcih conditions all of his true followers would know that the time had arrived for setting up of the thocratic government. Those foretold conditions definitely began to appear in A.D. 1914, at which time Jehovah enthroned his King, Christ Jesus, and sent him forth to rule while the enemy Satan still operates in the earth." The Watchtower January 15, 1938 p. 23

"The great antitypical David, Christ Jesus, did return in A.D. 1914, and in 1918 he came to the temple and there began the building up of Zion, concerning which all of God's prophets had foretold." The Watchtower June 15, 1938 p. 181

Don Cameron posted : And how discreet could they have been since they all announced the wrong date of 1874 for almost seven decades (67 years)?

    Hi again oompa,

    You asked…

So when/where exactly did WT change the date of Christ presence?

According to the "Proclaimers" book the date was changed to 1914 in 1943. The footnote on page 133 explains that the change is found in their 1943 book "The Truth Will Make You Free." – See also the footnote 38 on page 22 of "Captives of a Concept."

The footnote in the Proclaimers book does not state 1943 is when the change took place, although it is easy to assume that. It refers to a 1943 book that has the complete timeline of history corrected, but is not the first time 1914 is identified as the change from 1874 to 1914 as Jesus second coming. The actual date of change from 1874 is quite a bit earlier. In print, the earliest I have found is:

In the Light book, published in 1930......."that time began when he set his King upon his throne in A.D. 1914." But the earliest claimed in Proclaimers is:

    ***

However, at that time the Bible Students felt that the setting up of the Kingdom, its fullestablishment in heaven, would not take place until the final members of Christ’s bride were glorified. A real milestone was reached, therefore, in 1925, when TheWatchTower of March 1 featured the article "Birth of the Nation." It presented an eye-opening study of Revelation chapter 12. The article set forth evidence that the Messianic Kingdom had been born—established—in 1914, that Christ had then begun to rule on his heavenly throne, and that thereafter Satan had been hurled from heaven down to the vicinity of the earth. This was the good news that was to be proclaimed, the news that God’s Kingdom was already in operation.

I have not yet printed a scan of this 1925 WT, so please do anybody. 1874 to 1925 is 51 years.....oompa

The book Prophecy, published in 1929, on page 65, states, "The Scriptural proof is that the second presence of the Lord Jesus Christ began in 1874 A.D." Therefore, sometime between 1929 and 1930 the change was made from 1874 to 1914.

ps--edited to add that I forgot to mention there must have been a lot of disagreement over this teaching because while this was in the WT in 1925, the above cited book Prophecy with the old teaching came out in 1929...four years later!

    Oompa,

In the Light book, published in 1930......."that time began when he set his King upon his throne in A.D. 1914."

This quote might possibly be talking about a closely related, but separate event.

Today Jehovah's Witnesses date both the commencement of Christ's presence and his enthronement as king to 1914. But It's important to remember that originally, they were two separate events. The former was dated to 1874 and the latter was dated to 1878.

The 1878 date for Christ's entronement was moved foreward to 1914 in the year 1920 (cf. The Watch Tower July 1, 1920 p.196)

    Hi Oompa,

What is the nature of the contradiction?

The Bible Students and later the Jehovah's Witnesses have always believed that parousia is more properly translated "Presence" Therefore they have always believed that Christ's "Second coming" and "Christ's presence" are two different terms for the same event.

That observation is not directly connected to the changes Rutherford made.

I notice you've highlighted the term "Full establishment." This quote from Proclaimers pulls the usual obfuscation in this regard.

I don't know if this will help or make things worse, but in regard to the kingdom, Russell and Rutherford both used similar terms that meant different things. The two terms are, "Fully set up" and "Fully established."

"Fully set up" as Russell used the term meant set up in heaven and on earth. He taught that the heavenly phase of the kingdom had been set up in 1878 but would not be "Complete" until the last of the elect joined Christ in heaven. He believed that both events, the setting up of the kingdom on earth and the completion of the heavenly phase would occur in 1914. The 1878 date came from a parallel he drew from Jesus' earthly ministry. He believed that Christ had returned in 1874, but had not assumed kingly authority until 3 1/2 years later.

    Obviously this didn't happen.

In 1920, Rutherford moved Christ's assumption of kingly authority foreward from 1878 to 1914 and in 1925, he introduced the idea that the kingdom had been "Born" in 1914. This would have been alien to Russell, who probably would have dated such an event to Pentecost "Fully established" as Rutherford used the term meant that the kingdom had been "Born in heaven" in 1914.

TD...there seems to be a fine line between keeping this simple and making it really hard to fathom.

1.commencement of the parousia were one and the same.JW's have always believed this

    2. both the commencement of Christ's presence and his enthronement as king to 1914. But It's important to remember that originally, they were two separate events.

so were they always one and the same or once seperate?......oompa
